Physical Description:
Thin and twiggy, Emma stands at a whopping height of five foot four inches and isn't afraid to use all of it to her advantage. She's not particularly strong or athletic (save for her affinity to board sports), but genetically she is blessed (or cursed in her opinion) with a fast metabolism. Mostly, Emma is just skin and bone. Her hip bones stick out and she has what she considers as awkward knobbly knees. She's actually extremely self-conscious about how skinny and weak she is, and tries her hardest to gain weight. Once she tried to even gain some muscle mass by working out but soon found out that it took way too much effort.
Her natural hair color is a light brown, but she regularly bleaches or charms it out to a platinum blonde. She also charms other parts of her hair different colors depending on her mood or what party she is going to that weekend. Usually, if it's not a solid platinum blonde, she has dark brown streaks underneath the blonde. On any regular day, she can be found with her hair pulled up in a messy bun or down in a bedhead mess if she's feeling lazy. The fact that half the time she actually uses the muggle method of bleaching means that her hair can be very frizzy and fried. It results in the "Einstein look" as she's deemed it, especially after she's slept on it wet. Like a brunette however, Emma has dark brown eyes that have little auburn flecks in them. She usually chooses to hide them behind a square black pair of glasses. She has contacts that she wears out sometimes but that's only when she's really feeling sassy.
She doesn't have any tattoos currently, but she does want to get a few when she has the money. She does have her septum and tongue pierced, much to her mother's dislike. She also has her ears gauged slightly; they are currently at a size six. Fashion wise, Emma is a bit of a snob when it comes to her brand names. She has expensive taste in clothes, even if she's usually only wearing t-shirts, sweatshirts and jeans. Her usual day-to-day dress is that of a California skate brat, and she is very serious about her sneakers. She does, however, get quite dressed up for her weekends out. Depending on what kind of party or bar she's going to, she'll don anything from tight Gucci style dresses and stiletto heels to expensive high-top sneakers and designer jeans. It's all about showing up to the party with the most swag, and she definitely is a contender.

-Kia Dubinsky is the only person to know about what Sawyer did to her. Kia doesn't know exactly who did it but she's treated the girl several times. Detailed personality:
Loud and proud, Emma pulls all of the energy in a room when she walks in. She might only be of average height, but when she's in a big group of people, she uses her vibrant energy and volume to be the most noticeable. She has an easy going smile on her face ninety-eight percent of the time. Emma loves making new friends, and is nice to everyone she comes in contact with. She's so nice that it almost borderlines being utterly naive. Outwardly, it seems that she trusts everyone the second she meets them. She can see the good in anyone, and it usually dominates her view of that person. Regardless of who they actually are. Emma claims that she has a realistic view of the world though, and hasn't gotten into any real trouble. Yet. This doesn't mix well when her impulsive side takes over. Emma can be is very impulsive in all of her decision making, and it usually doesn't end well for her.
Beyond her party craziness and loud mouth attitude around big groups, lays a much gentler person. Emma is usually much quieter when she’s in a small group or one-on-one. She enjoys spending her days off from the party scene lounging around Ruby's apartment doing quiet activities. Sometimes she’ll clean, but usually can be found on the couch reading or playing video games when Ruby comes in from work. She can be a bit of an introvert if she isn’t around a large group, and most of the time will choose the company of one or two individuals over many. That doesn't mean she is always quiet however. She can be rather obnoxious no matter who she is around. She enjoys messing with people from time to time, especially if she deems them special or close friends.
As a friend, she is very compassionate and protective of those she cares about. This, because she makes instant friends with anyone, can be a lot of people. She’s the kind of person who would give any random person on the street money for the tube if they asked her the right way. There is a noticeable difference between how she treats all of her acquaintances and how she treats her closest friends however. For those who are truly close to her, she acts very motherly. She cares very deeply for her friends, and hates seeing them upset or hurt. She does everything in her power to make them happy and to see them smile. Emma loves her close friends so much that she will usually put own happiness on hold to help them. This includes remembering little details about them, surprising them with little tokens of her affections or picking up extra slack when it’s needed. Because of her goofy nature, sometimes these acts of good will can backfire on her. She always had good intentions though.
While Emma is always there for her friends to offer a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen and some wisdom for advice, she doesn’t let other people in very easily. Her happy, friendly act can be a cover sometimes for how she really feels inside. On the inside, Emma has a few anxiety problems that not many people know about. She has a hard time truly trusting people with her feelings, and if she’s feeling upset about the way someone treated her, she won’t say anything. She keeps a lot of her emotions bottled up inside of her, and when they get to be too much she cracks. Ruby is probably the only person who has ever seen Emma cry, and that the way that the girl wants to keep it. She feels stupid for wanting things from other people. She hates that she needs so much validation to feel like others want her company.
Her previous relationship didn’t do much to help the way she thinks in her own head. She feels pretty useless overall, in life and in her relationships. In every relationship she has gravitated towards people who were more dominant than she was. In the end they ended up taking her for granted, and leaving her by the wayside. Emma gets incredibly devoted to the person she’s dating, and goes extremely far out of her way to be good to them. Ideally, she really just wants someone who will recognize these things and return the favor to her. Even if it is just bringing her a cup of coffee when she’s trying to drag herself out of bed before noon. Thoughtfulness goes a long way in her book, and she really just wants someone who shows how much they care as much as she does. Emma doesn’t want to burden people with her feelings, and finds it much easier to just ignore her feelings of inadequacy. That’s one of the reasons she parties so hard and does so many drugs. For now, Ruby makes her feel incredibly happy and safe. She's just afraid that she won't be able to help the other girl.
Personal History
Emma was born on a stormy night in April to muggles Amelia and Lucas Thompson. Amelia was a professor of English at UCLA, Lucas a lawyer. Neither one of them knew what they had just brought into the family, and Emma grew up like any other muggle child would. As a child, she was extremely hyper and energetic. She was always on the move and getting into everything she could get her little hands on. Her mother always tried to sign her up for sports, but Emma never did follow the rules quite right. She either got sidelined in every sport she was in or the coach asked her parents to take her off the team. Emma never minded though, she was much happier being left to play in her own little world. As a child, she was very precocious and imaginative. She could spend hours on the beach playing by herself. It was always an adventure in Emma's mind, one filled with magical creatures and distant lands. Mundane activities like picking up her toys or going to the store with her mother became colorful worlds of mystery. Amelia always told her to knock it off, it wasn't realistic to pretend such things.
For Emma's sixth birthday, her parents finally found a sport that the energetic blonde could excel at. They got her her first surfboard, and lessons, and by summertime the little blonde was spending every day at the beach riding the smaller waves. It was the day that she decided to graduate to where the bigger kids surfed that she met Ruby Sykes. She had just gotten in a scuffle with a sixth grader over surfing in their spot, and looked as if she had just taken a sand bath when she came across the girl reading on the sand. Emma didn't have many female friends, mainly because of her rowdy attitude and interest in more male dominated hobbies, but there was something about this girl that drew her in. She stood and stared at her for at least five minutes before the girl looked up from her book at her. The rest was history, and Emma found herself a new best friend in Ruby. Her older sister might have been rude, but Emma was infatuated with the other girl. From the first time she made Ruby smile, she knew that all she wanted to do in life was make it happen everyday. In Emma's opinion, it would be the perfect way to spend the rest of her life.
For the next five years, Emma spent the non-summer months surfing and skating with her guy friends at school. She would call Ruby almost every day, along with emailing her and texting her constantly. It killed the blonde girl to only see her best friend for three months out of the year, but it was worth it every June when the brunette was back in her life. Every summer up until her eleventh birthday was like paradise with Ruby by her side, but during their eleventh summer, Emma noticed that the closer they got to September the more agitated Ruby got. It had always been painful to have to say goodbye, but this time, something was different. Ruby seemed sadder to leave this year, and Emma wondered what was eating the other girl. She wondered if it had something to do with the headmaster from the special school that had visited her on her birthday.
As Emma grew older, there were a few times that her imaginary worlds became a bit to real. There were several incidents where inexplicable things happened. Things that shouldn't have happened, that defied the rules of the natural world. Once, when she had been at the skate park, she had gone to launch herself off a bigger ramp then she was used to. She ended up catching the coping on the way down and fell about twelve feet. It should have been enough to have at least broken her arm. She started wailing like it had, but when a few adults ran over to help, they found there wasn't even a scratch on the young girl. No one could explain how she hadn't been seriously injured. There were several other incidents that happened leading up to Emma's eleventh birthday. Her parents always dismissed them, not wanting to believe that something was amiss. On Emma's birthday, a man came to visit her party named Ichiro Sato. He told Emma that she was a witch, and that she could preform magic if she had the proper training. Emma was sold from the instant he said magic, the petty musings of a child were about to become a reality. Her parents were harder to win over, but they were afraid. Afraid of what might happen if they didn't let their "magically gifted" daughter follow her destiny. It was a respectable school, one could do much worse the man from Blue Ridge reassured them. It took awhile for Amelia and Lucas to come around, Emma practically begged them until they said yes. They weren't comfortable with it but they agreed to let Emma go.
Before Sato left, Emma had asked him about her best friend Ruby. It would be the perfect adventure, to go to a school for magic with her best friend. Then they could be together all the time instead of just three months out of the year. He told her that he couldn't tell her, but that sometimes magic had a way of making wishes come true without explanation. He made Emma promise that she couldn't tell Ruby about her gift, or the wish might not come true and left that day with a small twinkle in his eye. Emma had kept the secret all summer from Ruby, and when she arrived at Blue Ridge to be sorted into her house, Sato just gave her a kind smile and pointed out her best friend standing in line ahead of her. It was the happiest day of Emma's life, even if she didn't get put in the same house as Ruby, she still got to learn magic with her best friend.
The lower academy, as much as Ruby bitched about it, was a blast for Emma. There were so many new and interesting people to talk to, and so many cool new things to learn. She didn't understand most of it, but Ruby would always help her with what she couldn't do. The only thing that was starting to weigh on Emma was her developing feelings for Ruby. Emma had always known that she loved the other girl, but as they continued to get older and their hormones began to mature, she started to actually love the girl. Ruby never showed interest however, and Emma was too scared to make a move. What if she lost her best friend? What if Ruby hated her forever once she told her how she really felt? Emma couldn't handle that kind of rejection, and so she began to try and get over her best friend. The first girl that she dated was in eighth grade, and Ruby simply despised her. The next three of Emma's girlfriends met the same end as the first, Emma getting dumped because they couldn't handle Ruby's attitude or they claimed that Emma was too young. Emma never blamed the other girl however, she was still desperately in love with Ruby and at least the other girl was still single right?
When Ruby started dating her first boyfriend, Emma immediately found herself a new girlfriend to numb the pain. She was a junior, just like Ruby's boyfriend. Her name was Sawyer, and she was fascinating to Emma. She was beautiful and dangerous, always on the move, and Emma couldn't help but be drawn to her. For a while, Emma felt like she was happy. Her parents had always made her feel like Magic was something to ashamed of, especially after it forced them into hiding. She had never really felt like she had belonged at home, when she was with Ruby had always been where she truly felt accepted. But that was different now, and she had spent the last several months feeling empty. Sawyer made her laugh, made her feel safe and loved again. It wasn't hard to fall for her, hard. Everything finally seemed to fall into place. She was making really good money in her sales ,and a girl that loved her back. It wasn't until late April that Emma realized she had made a mistake. Sawyer had always been a little bit touchy, a little bit jealous. Weird things would set her of and make her angry. Emma had taken it all in stride however, justifying it as just the way things were. She always found herself being guilted into saying things were her fault, and shutting herself off from everyone, even Ruby.
This continued for a few months until one night before summer break. Sawyer had just been emotionally abusive up until that point, something which Emma was having a hard time deciding if it was actually happening or not. Sawyer had always been a bit controlling but she told Emma that she just cared so much about her she was afraid of losing her. Emma can't quite remember what set Sawyer off that night, not that she's sure she wants to remember. It could have been the drugs they were taking, or the alcohol, or perhaps it was just building up to that point. Either way, Emma woke up the next morning with a black eye and a sore body. Emma was ashamed, she felt like she was personally responsible for how things ended up and she hid the marks from Ruby like her life depended on it. She didn't want Ruby to know how bad it had gotten when the other girl seemed so happy in her relationship. Emma knew that Ruby would blow her top if she ever knew, and she couldn't deal with her self hatred if she was alone. So she stayed with Sawyer and put up with the abuse.
It wasn't until Ruby showed up at her door one summer afternoon sobbing that things began to change. Emma carried her friend upstairs to her room where they had spent so many happy summers and just sat hugging her on her bed while Ruby told her everything. She had never hated anyone in her entire life, but at that moment, Emma Thompson knew what it was like to loath someone. She made sure that Ruby never left her side the rest of the summer, telling Sawyer that her parents had freaked out and grounded her. Emma suspected that Sawyer didn't mind much, she knew the older girl was sleeping around on her anyway. Sawyer, Emma had come to find out, liked prizes and Emma was nothing but a prize to her. Someone to toy with and control when she saw fit. Ruby, however, was different. She never made Emma feel like she was a failure or like a useless person. She always made the blonde girl feel special and safe. It was only a matter of time before she couldn't control herself any longer. She couldn't deny her feelings for Ruby any longer, she had spent so long trying to make Sawyer happy, and Sawyer had never done anything in return but put her down. Ruby always made sure to take care of her, to explain things patiently when she was confused and never called her stupid.
They had gone for a walk on the beach on night, the sand was still warm and the moon was providing enough light to see miles down the coast. They were sitting and watching the waves roll in, just enjoying the silence. Emma was sitting in front of Ruby, nestled safely in her arms and leaning into her chest. They had been talking about how they wished that things could always be this easy and peaceful. She wasn't sure what had prompted her but she suddenly turned towards the brunette and kissed her softly. Her first instinct was panic, waiting for the other girl to push her away and tell her she hated her, but Emma was pleasantly surprised to find Ruby kissing her back. It wasn't perfect, they were both still confused about their feelings, not to mention still trapped in terrible relationships. Emma slept as soundly as she ever had that night though, wrapped in Ruby's arms with a goodnight kiss. It was the happiest summer that Emma had ever had.
When they finally had to go back to school in the fall for their sophomore year, Emma could feel a cold dread overtake her. Sawyer was already texting her asking where she was, and Ruby's boyfriend was doing the same. It seemed as if their little sanctuary they had found over the summer had come to an end. Every second Emma had to spend with Sawyer dropped her further and further into depression, the only thing keeping her head above water was the stolen moments she had with Ruby. When Ruby left her douche bag of a boyfriend, Emma couldn't be happier but she still had to find a way to break free from Sawyer. She had never told Ruby of the physical abuse that Sawyer put her through, or that she was afraid of what Sawyer might do if she left her. The girl had already knocked her around for not seeing her all summer, what would she do if she told her she was gone for good? Her love for Ruby finally trumped her fear when the other girl asked her to leave Sawyer herself, how could Emma deny the girl she loved any longer?
It might have cost her a black eye, a broken nose and a broken rib (to which she swore Nurse Kia to secrecy about), but finally getting to be with Ruby was worth it. She's beginning to become her old self again, making more new friends and beginning to work for Tatum Donnelly selling all kinds of different drugs. Her grades are slipping, her relationship with her family is rocky at times but she got the girl in the end. Now she gets to make Ruby Sykes smile every day, just like she always wanted to.
