AUDREY TUAMAt 17 months both of her parents died amongst the countless others in when fanins (Raavi for infected) of the sand dunes attacked the small band who were preparing to create a third Raavi settlement. Audrey, with the other children, became the community children. They were reared and raised by the whole community. In Raavi, orphaned children lived in the town hall dormitories, being passed between families each month until they turn 18, where they choose which family they would like to join. Therefore they continue the family’s profession in case the biological children choose another profession to branch into.
While Audrey had no qualms about joining a family, when she turned 15 news reached Raavi about the alien invasion occurring far away. The underground society that had formed during the same time as the Raavis had expanded rapidly. It was time, some decided, to make themselves known to the other societies on Earth. Others angrily rejected the notion, citing the telepath who had scorned their society as alien.
While the debates raged on, Audrey began to learn more and more about the underground society from living at town hall. With the other orphans, she excitedly planned for the what-if possibilities. The debates eventually came to a stalemate and as other orphans returned to picking their families; Audrey continued to think of the potentials.
Then a family called for her adoption. While typically unusual at such a young age, an engineer had taken special interest in Audrey’s sparkling technological talent. It was in the second settlement beyond the dunes and as extra incentive a newly manufactured car was given as a gift. Audrey accepted.
