A vast battle that had addled the minds of the participants so much it was hard to remember half of what had occurred.

Asgard and its allies had been victorious, but it was good, at times, for terms of temporary truces to be hammered out after the mourning and the celebration was done. This was often done not by Aesir themselves, who weren't exactly the best at such negotiations with their neighbors, but more 'neutral,' if loyal, allies like the Wolves of the Forest.
While his Father attended to other matters, Douglas was sent on the mission to Svartheim..

It had been a glorious battle, but there was something unmistakably off about it. It had been a close battle, in fact he had brought many of the hated Aesir down himself, but the enemy's countenance was..wrong. As were those of his men frankly. Was even he himself affected by it? Hard to say, though he honestly didn't want to think he was weak-willed enough to fall under some haze.

Regardless of the battle, his mother was adamant in her desire to not allow this battle to turn into a larger war. To signify her commitment to peace, she had sent Kael, her heir, to oversee the negotiations. He stood in the Dark Elf encampment, awaiting the ambassador.

He approached in halfform, appropriatly announcing himself.

"I am Douglas Hrimharisson, of the Wolves."

Kael nods his head. "I am Kael, Prince of Svartheim. We have much to discuss."

"Yes. I believe we are agreed that the battle which has just recently occurred should be enough for now?"

Kael didn't mention that he could have reinforcements arrive in a matter of days. Nor did he mention a resurging push could dislodge the Asgardians. The Dark Elves could triumph here..but that wasn't what his mother wanted. Kael may not agree, but he loved and honored his mother above all others. Glory would have to be earned another day.

"Queen Allhyse has agreed to cease hostilities regarding the border. Have the Aesir given you terms?"

The border issues? Had that been all the Elves were in it for? Douglas had assumed they were after the baby, like the Frost Giants and ... whomever Lord Odin had been fighting.
But Douglas isn't going to let his confusion show. Instead, he nods sharply and begins reciting the landmarks which indicate territories of individual realms as well as those which mark temporary zones of avoidance for the next few months, to prevent aggression.

"And as always," he says as he completes the recitation, "The Forest is an autonomous principality, and Elves, Giants, Trolls, and Aesir alike may not cross unmolested past our first set of oaks without Prince Hrimhari's permission... with the continued exception," he adds drily, "Of our distinguished cousin Halbjorn, who has been granted exemption. Though that little matters now, as he will return to Midgard as soon as he has hope of wandering that far."

In truth his mother had been very firm in her desire to keep her people as far away from that conflict as possible. The only reason for the battle as far as he knew was that Asgardians had violated the treaty by coming into Dark Elf land.

"That's all well and good, but it was the Asgardians who invaded our lands. I do not know the full scale of the battle that occurred in Asgard, but the Queen ordered no attack from our people on them. I resent the idea of them dictating terms when it was our sovereignty that was violated."

And this time, Douglas does cant his head slightly, a sign of the need for more information for those who know anything about the Wolves.

"But there would have been no need for our allies to penetrate your territory were it not that this was where a portion of the invaders were coming from. It's within the Aesir's interests to see that Svartheim cannot be used by the giants and the trolls -- " and the anybody else, wasn't there someone else? This is embarrassing; Douglas has never forgotten a heroic detail in his life. Not even when Mummy asked and he was in trouble, unfortunately. "-- as a staging area. Are the terms reasonable to Svartheim otherwise?" They seemed very fair to Douglas. Father had drawn them out himself, and no one actually lost anything at all, unless the Wolves had missed something that only people who Had Stuff cared about.

"The Queen sanctioned no use of our land to any invaders into Asgard. If the Aesir had bothered to look they would have seen that we had slain several of the impertinent fools for the use of our land for their attack on Asgard. But Asgard did not bother learning the truth, they assumed we were involved and attacked us and we retaliated accordingly."

Kael took a deep breath. "Personally I'd see Svartheim paid reparations for the deaths and damage done to our home in the Asgardians' war, but..the Queen has decided not to pursue such demands. She would find the proposal acceptable most likely."

Douglas looks pretty impassive as to the subject of what calls his father's allies made in the heat of battle, and tactfully refrains from comment over how much control the Queen has over all of the Dark Elves who may or may not have been involved.

"Indeed. I defer to my parents in these decisions as well"

Kael sighs again, though this is a more resigned one.

"Indeed, but perhaps that is best. They can see a larger picture we cannot." Kael looks a little chagrined. "Pardon my outburst."

He nods at the last part. "Of course. A very tiring few days. But yes, as 'tis said on Midgard, the buck stops with them." Douglas always assumed that this American saying had to do with the Alpha's having the say on how the kill is apportioned, but Granny had tended to look at him funny when operated on that assumption.

"That the responsibilities of leadership, both the glory of the triumphs and the blame for the failures, can only be doled out so far, and no further."
