Culture Clash [18 Jan 2014|10:40pm]
They had been in the United States for only a few days and while the sights were lovely and she had enjoyed the food far more than she anticipated, Kikuya was a little tired.  Walking in Western shoes was different and made her use her muscles differently for starters, but some of the comments that had been made wore on her.

During a break in the day, Kikuya sat in a far corner of a Starbucks waiting for Amiko, contemplating what sort of treat she might get for Grogg as she sat.

Outside Kawazu in an area politely removed from the comings and goings of the tourists who filled the town to bursting each year during sakura season stood a little, traditional house itself half-hidden among the sakura.  Even the proper residents of Kawazu often paid no notice to the house as it seemed to disappear when the sakura were in full bloom, though everyone had something they could contribute about the woman who lived there--she was quiet, she was reclusive, she was kind to children who stumbled onto her property, that she was an old woman with a girl's face.

The house had been Kikuya's one secret, a treasure she had tucked away from the government and even from her friends during her service to Japan.  It was the house she had been born in, owned by her grandfather and carefully, privately shuffled along until a time when Kikuya herself had taken ownership of it and in her hands it remained less of a home and more of a token connecting her to the life that slipped away when the government had turned her into what she was.

Now it was all she had, a private place where no one bothered her and no one knew that the private woman at the end of the lane in the house was once a national hero.  No one knew that she had once been Super Geisha.  No one knew that she had been taken away from the only thing that mattered to her.  They just knew that every year, just before Tanabata, she came into town to mail a package to a man in the city, the package absent of a return address, but wrapped in the colorful wish papers of the holiday.

And every year, on Tanabata, Hajime receives a package wrapped in the colorful papers of wishes, the postal service acting as a flock of magpies creating a bridge, though outside Kawazu, Kikuya isn't sure he even knows that his mysterious admirer send him books not from the heart of a smitten fan, but instead from a familiar, long-thought-lost heart.

Two days after Tanabata, Kikuya rises as she always does at dawn and goes outside to watch the sun rise.

It felt like a long time since she was home, but even as she stood just outside the building that she once resided in Kikuya knew that she was not home.  Life had been taken from her not in the functions that made her alive but in the spirit that made her who she was.  In the past handful of days she had pieced together what the official story was: very simply the government had "killed" her.  The Super Geisha had perished in a terrible accident returning from a goodwill tour.  There had been mourning for her and a state holiday, then everyone moved on.  Japan had a new cultural hero now, though Kikuya hadn't bothered to find out who or what.  She hoped it was Grogg.  It would give her friends something to smile about as they grieved for her.

But Kikuya had not died.  The details of what had really befallen her were far different and complex.  All she knew was that she had her freedom now, though freedom meant no more geisha.  Uncomfortable as it was she found herself in street clothes in the hustle of the city.  There was only one place she really wanted to go and she turned from the corner across from her former residence and walked a few blocks down to a place that truly felt as though it were home.

She could only hope that Hajime would welcome her now that she was not something that he could have use for or could value.  If he did not...well.  Honor had other options.

Test Scene [30 Jan 2011|12:00pm]
"Casual Friday" at the Big Hero 6 offices meant that Kikuya cold wear her blue kimono and no makeup.  Actually what it meant was that she could wear 'regular' clothing but the idea was horrifying to her.  Why, exactly, did women want to encase their legs in heavy blue fabric that made them look as to be walking frozen sausages?  She did not understand, though she had made one concession to trend, as it were; she wore black flipflops.

With stockings.

As she walked down the hall the shoes made such a delightful soft little sound hitting against her stockinged feet.  Kikuya couldn't help but smile with her eyes.
