Maya Rose Whitby is an 18 year old witch who works as a PR spokeswoman for Obscurus Books, publisher of such textbooks as 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them'. Family History

Mother: Nadine Magdalena Whitby, née Harrison. Aged 44, she comes from a long line of wizards from Hertfordshire, and is a Ravenclaw alumnus.
Father: Richard Michael Whitby. Aged 47, he is a Yorkshire wizard born and bred, formerly of Slytherin house.

Appearance: Maya is slightly taller than the average height for her age and gender, standing at a not unreasonable 5'6 tall. She has also very much grown into her looks - whilst at school she looked very young for her age, she now looks like any other pretty blonde in her late teens. Her dainty features are accentuated with girlish makeup, and she wears modern clothing that looks current and up to date - unless she is in the office, where she sticks to smart shoes, dress trousers and some kind of print blouse. She is interested in fashion and considers dressing appropriately to be very important to help get what she wants, although she wouldn't be unkind about someone else's choices - she's a Hufflepuff, after all.

History: Born in early August under the sign of Leo, Maya is every bit as sunny (and fiery) as you might expect. She came into the world kicking and screaming - much to the confusion of her then almost-3-year-old brother - and fully intends to leave it the same way. By the time her younger brother Liam arrived, some two and a half years later, Maya had begun to show her true colours as an outgoing, bold, brash, yet fiercely loyal child. Where she was expected to be incredibly jealous, she became incredibly protective of both her siblings. Indeed, her first sign of magic was one day at the park with Liam when her mother had taken them to play before picking up Kevin from his Muggle primary school - one of the bigger children had tried to push him from the swings, instead finding himself head first in a muddy puddle.

Like Kevin before her, it was expected that she would be sorted into Ravenclaw (like her mother) or Slytherin (like her father) when she arrived at Hogwarts. Her father in particular insisted that his only daughter showed a real Slytherin streak of cunning - but the Hufflepuff loyalty she shares with her brother won out, and Helga's house was her home for the next seven years.

Things were naturally terrible during her first year - 1997-8 - as this was when the Second Wizarding War raged and the Carrows terrified most. Her big mouth almost got her into terrible trouble when Alecto slapped her for looking insufficiently convinced during one of the compulsory Muggle Studies classes - the family lived amongst Muggles and she didn't believe them to be the dirty, nasty creatures this regime described them as - and for having 'an insolent look' upon her face. It was only being on the receiving end of a wake-up-call from one of the prefects that made her realise what would happen if she didn't keep quiet. In this sense, she managed to avoid torture, but she spoke vocally against the regime when yet another student would come back into the Hufflepuff common room, nursing the wounds obtained during the infamous torture detentions.

The rest of her time at school was luckily relatively uneventful, though she was determined to make her mark. Unlike Kevin, she worked so hard during her fourth year that she became prefect the year after, although some were surprised and thought that one of the quieter, more sensible candidates would get the badge. She made sure that she proved she had earned the badge, though, becoming a popular yet occasionally acerbic authority figure within her house. She narrowly missed out on the Head Girl job but took the loss with good grace, saying that the Head Students needed a strong team behind them and that she was determined to play this role - which naturally, she did. 'A Hufflepuff maintains her dignity, decorum, grace and integrity' was her motto.

Graduating with respectable grades in her 7th year exams - O grades in Muggle Studies and COMC with E grades in Herbology and DADA - she spent the summer handing out CVs and applying for jobs at varying institutions. A fellow prefect, who was doing summer work at Flourish and Blotts, let her know that Obscurus Books (located midway down Diagon Alley) were looking for young graduates to train in various locations, so she gave applying ago. On meeting Maya, the CEO decided that with her record and references, PR would be the ideal first step on the publishing ladder.

Patronus: A Jack Russell terrier - a typically northern animal resembling a crup - which makes her more like Kevin than she will admit.
Boggart: Creepy crawlies and bugs crawling everywhere, especially hairy spiders.
Magical Strengths and Weaknesses: Maya enjoys areas of magic that involve ones personality and people skills - hence the fact that she excelled at Muggle Studies and DADA on the human side and Herbology and COMC which require knowledge of how to handle living things. She is less good at subjects that require intense theory work and mental concentration - she avoided Arithmancy and Ancient Runes like the plague, and struggles a little with non verbal spells.
Likes and Dislikes: Likes: Her cat (Dickie, a Persian grey), being girly but not overly feminine, chocolate covered strawberries, living in a bustling city, school related matters.
Dislikes: Having more acquaintances and friends, insects and arachnids, porridge, being stuck in the middle of nowhere, being a grown-up.
