Well, that was a conversation opener. He reflects for a moment. "I believe you, Fury. I have some bullet-related precautions, but do I get to know why I need them?"
"Because I want to shoot at something when I'm cranky and I'm going to be very cranky over the next eight months or so."
Jack's about to ask what's up when the eight months part is said. "...Ah. Well. Understandable then. Possibly not the only gun I'll be seeing quite noticably sometime soon. Have you seen a doctor yet?"
"Don't worry, the folks like you. And no, I haven't seen a doctor yet. Just giving you a heads up in case you starting getting that target itch between your shoulders when you're hunting for coffee and considering theft of my stash."
"This is where a very stupid man would point out you'll be using much less of it anyway. I appreciate the warning."
"And yet, you just pointed it out." It must be shock. Even Power had to react with news like that, it just hadn't hit him yet. Maybe he thought it was a joke.
"Anyway, you needed to know. Just in case."
A blink. A pause for re-analysis. "...So I did. Classification still stands, then." A breath. "Yes. Thank you. When are you going to the doctor?"
"Soon. Don't worry, Power, I have this covered. There will be a doctor browbeating me about coffee and stopping time shortly. SHIELD be benefits are pretty good. "
"Yeah, I know, that's why I've got mom on temp coverage," Jack mutters. "Am I allowed to attend? The... doctor...stuff, I mean."
"You want to see the doctor? Why?" She was genuinely interested now.
Jack looks slightly bemused at the question. "...Because...I'm the father?"
"Right, invoke logic. Power, I just had a physical. This would just be confirmation and lists of things I can and can't do, most of which I intend to ignore. If you want to be around for that, be my guest."
And Jack will decide to just stick with nodding at that. "Thanks." Pause. "Have you talked to La Contessa yet?"
"I did, and she assured me that no one will be shot. Although if you see her and she has questions, I'd appreciate it if you ignored them. I've also vetoed her suggestion that I move home. Didn't fight this long for independence just to run back at the first bump in the road."
"Understandable policy," he acknowledges. Of course, her mother's view is reasonably understandable too, but Jack's getting the hang of this conversation enough not to say that part. And there must be a way to politely avoid too many questions.
Sammy smiled widely. This was going far better than she had hoped.
"Glad we're on the same page, Power. I appreciate how reasonable you're being. No reason to get crazy or make changes to what already works very well."
"There's... definitely a lot of changes on hand already without multiplying them unnecessarily, yes," he says thoughtfully.
"Come over for dinner this weekend. We can exchange notes and I'll probably have a stack of files potential nannies from Mom."
"Thanks I'd like -- nannies?"
When Margaret Power seemed like she was going to require full time care for her neurological disorder, Jack, the pragmatist of the group, hadn't even suggested hiring a nurse. He'd told his siblings he was quitting the war.
There was... just some things one /did/.
"...Yeah. Talking about that would be ... good. I'd like properly discuss all the options." Like the one he actually wanted to do: get out of the field and give the kid a stay at home parent.
"Well, more like security. I had several when I was growing up. Mom and Dad couldn't always be home and I couldn't always be at HQ. There were times I didn't see them for weeks. But yes, a combat nanny. The folks will insist. A grandbaby would be as big a worry for Dad as I was."
"...Yeah. Obviously the prevention of a nightmare scenario is a valid security concern." He's not only going to be a father, he's going to be the father of someone who is already the subject of a nightmare scenario. Okay.
"Yeah, you have a lot to think over. Just keep in mind that I have it under control." For the moment. It could be different after her first day of reduced caffeine. Sammy only knew that she had a lot to lose if she didn't put things into the right perspective. Her career, such as it was, for one. Although, she could use it to her advantage. Finish her degree, for one.
"I'll let you tell your family just so you can't accuse me of talking to your sisters too much. And don't forget Friday."
By the time the weekend arrived, Sammy was seriously thinking about shooting Power. Morning sickness that refused to observe mornings was horrible.
And Power would be within target range, having shown up with some caffeine free ginger ale.
Sammy would be holding a soothing mug of coffee. Her first of the day and nothing short of a larger mug of coffee would part her from it.
"I actually made a bet with myself you'd find a way to postpone dinner, but it was probably the morning sickness talking."
"Possibly so," Jack says slowly. "Did you and the morning sickness arrange stakes, or was it just a conversational sort of bet?"
"It was conversational. Come in." She gestured with the mug to the living area of the small apartment. "Have a seat. Tell me what deep thoughts you've been thinking the last few days."
"...Well, if you want me to lay it out straight, Fury, I'm not sure how well my expectations of myself as a father are going to mesh with Black Diaper Baby Protocol."
Sammy sat down. Between her head and her stomach, balance was a precarious thing. "How about making that a little straighter, Power. Is this your way so long and thanks for all the coffee? Because Black Diaper Babies are a family tradition."
"Sorry, you're not rid of me that easily. I'm just trying to come to terms with how it's going to be, if you really want her-or-him with a specialist most of the day instead of with me."
"Whoa, wait a minute. You're mad because of child care arrangements? I know you're mad. You use long words when you're mad."
"I'm not mad at you. I'm mad at the broad general principle of not being there for my kid. We'll discuss all the options for security-detail-nannies, but I want to be one of the options discussed. If we agree I'm qualified, I'll put in for transfer out of the field, okay?"
"You want to be a stay at home parent?" Growing up in her unconventional family, it was a strange concept to Sammy. "I just told you a couple of days ago."
"I do, yeah. That is the paradigm I'm comfortable with."
Power was making leaps and bounds into territory Sammy never thought to explore. Of course he could think clearly. /He/ was getting his full day's worth of caffeine whenever he wanted it.
"Security issues aside, it's not the only reason why a nanny would be needed. What else is going on in your head?"
