☆ Special Abilities/Powers: L's genius towers in comparison to others, and this unique talent of arriving at startlingly precise conclusions given little information makes him appear almost prescient. His individual ability to investigate has been compared favorably to entire information agencies such as the FBI and the CIA, so it's in the best interest of the World that he protect both himself and his proteges, himself with the use of aliases and proxies, his successors/proteges by omission. Due to his unprecedented investigational skills, he works for Interpol on dangerous high-profile cases. These strategies served him well, up until the Kira case, when he is forced to work with the Police and thereby compromise his security.

Personality: L is a complicated young man. While his tone and affect tend to be flat, thus lacking the average variation in mood, making him appear emotionless; observational people can easily tell by his body language and situational unwillingness to look others in the eye that he feels emotions intensely that for the most part, he is successful in suppressing. His preference for hiding his emotions are based on his personality type, specifically, L is an INTP, very introspective, intuitive, thinking and perceptive, which added to his towering genius makes him quite the adversary. To say that he is an intelligent man is an understatement. His strength lies in his ability to thoroughly analyze a given problem and produce an effective means to solve it. He delegates rather than implementing his solutions personally; his focus in life almost entirely internal.

A secretive man by nature, his first priority is to protect himself and his protégés. He only takes cases which interest him or more precisely – cases that only he is able to solve. This leads him to behave in an extremely hyper vigilant manner, to the point that he works until he's so exhausted that he sports black circles like eyeliner beneath his eyes and is occasionally found asleep on the chair at his desk. His apparent passionate belief in justice is a façade, although he can discriminate between good and evil; he feels strongly that Kira is an evil that he must risk his life in order to stop. It is to this end that L tells untruths. He lies to the Kira Investigation Team by telling them he suspects Light Yagami by a percentage of only 5, when in reality he believes the likelihood of Yagami being Kira is closer to 90%. Another example of L’s propensity to lie is when he tests Light as a suspect of being Kira by showing him the three messages Kira with hints about Shinigami loving apples. By showing Light the three photos of the messages Kira left via manipulating his victims) and telling him he wanted to test his deduction skills, he knew if Light were Kira he wouldn’t even consider of the possibility of a fourth (and fake) message; which Light did not infer, thus making him appear that much more suspicious. L is not above breaking the law to find the solution to the problem/puzzle (as he likes to think of an investigation); he steals Misa Amane’s cell phone before Light has a chance to call her to ask that she deliver his name to him.

While stubborn and determined, L ultimately considers winning the war more important than individual battles; showing this willingness over and over again, an early example being the tennis match L asks Light to play when first they meet. In order to gain Light’s trust and become closer to Kira, L deliberately exposes certain weaknesses to Light, making himself appear vulnerable; and therefore more human.

His greatest weakness is his fascination with Kira. When Light Yagami accuses L of sounding as though he wants Light to be Kira, L outright admits, “In fact, I think you’re right, I wanted you to be Kira.” His colleagues view L as an eccentric due to his lack of socialization. Frequently mistaken for a voyeur, he’s lived life vicariously by watching people through the media, hidden cameras and video tapes. Socially, he’s stunted and while he’s an excellent authority figure, has trouble relating to others personally. A stoic, logical soul, L is calm, and neither conforms nor bows to convention. He’s easily overwhelmed and irritated by peer pressure, particularly when his colleagues express themselves in a way that he feels is overly emotional, to the point that he’ll display erratic behavior such as overfilling his tea cup with sugar cubes, or actually fleeing the room. L’s behavior is occasionally childish, as he gets into not one, but two fights with Light Yagami; or he can appear utterly unaffected, as when he answers the Investigational Team’s questions very bluntly without batting an eye. Both of these behavioral characteristics make others acutely uncomfortable.

He is trained in Capeoria, a martial art native to Brazil. After an exchange of blows between himself and Light Yagami, he declares that he is stronger than he appears, which turns out to be true both physically and emotionally.

Seldom eating anything other than sweets, L can possibly be considered a sugar addict and appears mildly surprised when others don't share his passion for cake, cookies, ice cream, fruit and sugar with a pinch of tea or occasionally coffee. His usual method of holding objects is by suspending them by the tips of his index finger and thumb, allowing them to dangle precariously. He eats with gusto, rarely wears socks and shoes, preferring to rub his feet together for warmth, and clearly enjoys life. L has a wonderful, mischievous sense of humor, made even more enjoyable by the fact that his delivery is so dry.

Highly motivated to clear his cases and win over who or what he deems as evil and/or solve the puzzle in front of him, L is perfectly willing to go as far as breaking the law to catch the criminal he pursues.

History:  L was orphaned at an early age and it is unclear whether it was due to his parents having died or whether he was abandoned. Taken into the Wammy House, a facility serving as both shelter and school for gifted children by a man named Quillish Wammy but known as  Watari, L thrived and his career skyrocketed. He rose to win a Junior Champion Tennis Title, as well as the reputation as three of the top detectives in the world (himself, Eraudo Coil, and Deneuve).

The hidden cameras confirmed their suspicions. Light made a deal with Namikawa to assist them and call off the recent deaths. L found this all the more impressive... and all the more suspicious. With his theory that Kira could transfer powers, he began to suspect Light might want to take the title of L after killing him and taking back the power of Kira.

Light didn’t appreciate this, of course, but they continued their investigation, nonetheless, appointing Misa to take a spokeswoman job and collect more information. She exceeded L’s expectations by tricking Higuchi into confessing he was Kira and recording it on their phone. Having enough information, L set up a plan, placing Matsuda on Sakura TV and surveillance all around Higuchi. The plan fell into place perfectly, and watching Higuchi even confirmed his suspicions over Shinigami. L wanted to wait until they discovered the method of Kira’s power, but soon realized they couldn’t as Higuchi murdered an officer, revealing he had the power to kill by just looking at someone’s face.

Higuchi (the third in a succession of three Kiras to appear during L’s lifetime) gave up easily when cornered by the police. He of all the owners of the Notebook provided information vital to solve case – the Death Note itself. The arresting officers discovered that the book was supernatural and touching it resulted in their ability to see its shinigami. L asked for Higuchi's notebook to be passed to him and as he studied the unearthly creature, Light also touched it, flooding his mind with his memories of being Kira. L couldn’t help but notice Light's scream of fear, so he gently turned to his friend to reassure him that anyone would react the same way upon seeing a shinigami. It appeared that the moment L heard Light’s scream in addition to noticing a slight change in his personality, L knew then that it was likely he would die.

Immediately upon Higuchi’s arrest, Light Yagami killed Higuchi, causing the ownership of the notebook to return to him by default. The shinigami haunting the notebook was Rem, who had developed feelings for Misa. Since the only way a shinigami could be killed was by interfering in the lifespan of a human for whom one has feelings, which Light knew and counted on as a possible option to use Rem to kill L; effectively killing two birds with one stone.

Upon return from the arrest and death of Higuchi, L, Light and the Investigation Team studied the rules of the Death Note. According to one of the rules, whosoever used the notebook must continue to do so at least every 13 days or they would die. Based on this, neither Light Yagami nor Misa Amane could have been Kira since they’d been incarcerated for a much longer period of time than the required 13 days, exonerating them of all suspicion. L apologized and released them from surveillance.

L noticed how suddenly Light’s personality had changed yet again and that the tables seemed to have turned; L having gone from being the watcher to becoming the watched. Based on his conviction that he was right about Light, L asked Watari to set up an experiment to test the 13 day rule using the Death Note. In order to save Misa, Rem wrote both Watari and L’s names in her notebook. Thus, she ended her own life, Watari’s and L’s.
