Janie grinned and pushed the door to her sister's room open, holding a plate with brownies. "I snuck some extra just in case I had to pay the entrance fee. I thought I had the yearly pass?" It was always great when Joy was home, Daddy tended to be busy and Steph was often too, besides, Joy was fun to hang out with. She had the best stories to boot, Janie was just really starting out at this crimefighting business and didn't have too many of her own so she relished the times she got to hear about all of Joy's exploits. Though now with the new team, she had a few stories of her own to share now.
Plopping down onto Joy's bed, Janie held out the plate of brownies to offer her sister a few.
This was why Janie was her favorite. Okay, not really. She adored her younger sister, baked goods or no. But the brownies really were very good. She grinned at Janie, sitting up and setting down the magazine as she moved to make room for the younger girl. "It's a special one night only fee," she assured her. Your yearly pass is still in effect." It was nice to just get to spend time with her family, especially Janie. It felt like her sister had grown ridiculously every time she came home and she didn't want to miss out on anything.
Taking a bite of a brownie, she gave a low, pleased hum. "Mom's cooking is the best," she said. "Sin's going to want a whole box of baked goods when I go back, to make up for missing this." Her best friend could have stayed with her, but she'd got to visit her own parents. "So, Jaybird," she said, "how are things going for you?"
"Oh good, I was worried this was more than just a hidden fee. If I offer another brownie do I upgrade to VIP?" She'd been young enough when Joy had first come into her life that she didn't have all that many memories of the time before her, and that was perfectly fine according to Janie because she loved having a big sister. Though it often sucked that she wasn't around as much since starting university but at least she visited.
"It is," Janie agreed. "Still, she won't get ones as good as these." Biting into her brownie she grinned and finished chewing before she answered. "Good! I'm on a team now, we beat a Starro mini-invasion, and Mikal and I managed to get one off Mr. Jordan on our own." Hey, she finally had more impressive things than training adventures and mischief to share, had to take advantage of it.
"I think two brownies more than earned you a VIP upgrade," Joy said with a smile. "I'd say it gets you lifetime membership." It had been long enough that she barely remembered a time when she didn't have her sister in her life. Of course, part of that was a desire not to think about the parents who had raised her, the ones who had died when she was still young. It was easier to focus on the family she had now. She was lucky, luckier than most, to have two families who loved her. And she wouldn't trade this one for anything.
"Of course not," she said. "She won't get them hot." Not that Sin minded too much. She got Joy's baking regularly, and she was almost as good as her mother. She listened to Janie, smiling as her sister filled her in on her life. "Sounds like you've been busy," she said. "I'm proud of you. Now, remind me. Which one's Mikal?" She sometimes had a hard time keeping the younger girl's friends straight.
"That's pretty exclusive," she smiled back. Sure Sin got Joy's baking but Janie got to have Steph's more often so it more than evened out. Even if she would admit that Joy's stuff was nearly as good, and a lot better than any store-bought things by far.
Janie had to laugh and tease her older sister for that. "You haven't gotten better with names! Mikal's my cousin remember? The arrow one that's in Sin's family too? You know him! He's all trouble though and I have to keep reigning him in from things all the time, it's a Harper thing he says." But still, it was nice to know that Joy thought she was doing well and was proud of her. "Thanks, I'm trying to finally do more of the crimefighting thing like you and Daddy. And the rest of the family too."
"Of course it's exclusive," Joy said, laughing. "You're my baby sister. You get all the best deals." She considered for a moment, before she said anything else. "You know, that membership extends to my apartment, whenever you want to stay over. Spare room's yours any time." She had a pretty nice place, all said. Gotham had low rates, and she had a sizable account from the Ellises and from the settlement from the accident. It made it easier to get out on her own.
She rolled her eyes as Janie teased her, unbothered because that was just how family was. "I move around so much I can't keep anyone straight," she said with a shrug. "I remember your name. And Sin's. And mom and dad. Besides, it could have been a different Mikal. I doubt he's the only one in the world." She smiled, reaching over to ruffle Janie's hair. "You're doing good, kiddo. In fact, what do you say we do a sweep later tonight? I could use a workout, and it's been a while since we went out together."
"I'll try not to rub it into other people's faces," she joked. Though the offer of coming to visit had her sit up a bit with an excited grin. "Really? I could?" She'd been to Gotham before, many times, but mostly to visit Grandpa Bruce, for Dad's business trips, and when they visited to help Joy set up her apartment in Gotham. But never on her own really, Daddy had all sorts of stories and warnings about Gotham but if there was any way she'd be allowed to go somewhere on her own, Gotham especially, it'd be to visit Joy. It sounded promising, this way she might get to see Joy more often and not have it depend on parental schedules. Besides, she was a good flier.
"Guess I'm lucky you still remember my name, because name tags suck, they fall off too much." Janie laughed and tried to duck away from the hair ruffle unsuccessfully. The offer of a patrol with her sister certainly caught her attention. "Deal! We haven't done one in forever, and I've been training a lot with Daddy so I've gotten better too." |
