DETAILED PERSONALITY:
A naturally angry person, Rabastan is quite easy to annoy. He has very few that he allows to talk and tease him in a certain manner, but besides those select people, he rarely takes anything from anyone. His bosses find him infuriating but are terrified to do anything because of his family's reputation, along with the fact that Rabastan finds no qualms in modifying their memories. He's gotten a few raises and promotions that way.
His thoughts run on rapid tangents through his ever-thinking mind. Many times these thoughts are violent and more than paranoid, but Rabastan has the remarkable capability of suppressing these urges until he is in a situation to release them. Which isn't good for his victims, but it leaves a wake of terror that the other death eaters dare not cross. He knows that he is the second born, and in the eyes of the social world he's invaluable, but Rabastan is also quite aware of how the marriage of his brother to Bellatrix Black has helped his status in the ranks of the Dark Lord and his followers. Yes--he's quite aware of the power.
History
Born second in a very prominent pureblooded family set Rabastan Lestrange on a predictable course for his life. The unnecessary heir, Rabastan was simply spoiled and given all the best opportunities a young wizard could have because it would be thoroughly embarrassing to have a less than perfect child, not that his parents were molding him to take over the family some day. He simply (simply, simple; that's a word that describes Rabastan quite well) went along with the tutoring and the social gatherings that came along with their circle of family and friends. Rabastan was never bored, he enjoyed learning far more than anything his parents could possibly give him, and took his seat at the table and watched the ongoings of the adults, listened into the conversation of the older children (his brother had particularly interesting tales most of the time) and simply (again) took in his world.
The boy was reading by the age of three, something that his parents would have noticed had they cared enough, and by four was able to control quite a bit of wandless magic. His mind was unparalleled to those of his age group and it often ostracized him from 'play dates.' Rabastan didn't mind this much, however, and spent a lot of his time in his room, making his toys fly around this room in intricate patterns and levitating books from the high shelves of his father's library to read. By the time he went off to Hogwarts, Rabastan could boast that he'd read every book in the Lestrange estate, which was clearly a feat as most were there for design.
He stopped boasting, however, when the Sorting Hat sent him to Ravenclaw, instead of the predicted Slytherin.
Rabastan couldn't understand it; he knew he was smart, of course he knew, but that didn't mean he was different from the rest of his family. He forced himself not to cry after the Sorting Ceremony, but spent the night on his bed sobbing, petrified that his family would disown him for going to a House that wasn't Slytherin. He wrote to his brother with the news, and Rodolphus must have noticed the tear stains for Rabastan was quickly scolded for crying. He was told to suck it up and that thankfully he wasn't Sorted into Hufflepuff or Gryffindor.
His time at Hogwarts was rather dull. Joining the quidditch team helped with the social aspects of his life, but Rabastan remained focused on his studies and was eagerly awaiting his prefect badge in his fifth year, only not find it in his Hogwarts letter. In a move of rare courage, he approached Professor Flitwick about the decision and was told that he simply did not have the presence for a prefect, that the other students would not take him seriously. This deeply hurt Rabastan, and instead of changing his ways and becoming more outgoing, he reverted back to the hermit days of his youth until leaving the school, receiving the highest amount of O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s in his class, hoping that at least proved that he was worthy of prestigious titles.
Rabastan's life outside of Hogwarts has been relatively static, being a researcher in the Ministry's Department of Mysteries. He's not an Unspeakable, but one day hopes to be, and currently works through the archives of the department, sorting and reevaluating thousands of years worth of magical information. His brother's marriage to Bellatrix Black was the biggest spark Rabastan's life had seen in a long time. He'd known for ages that the two were to be wed, but actually being related to the woman was entirely different than imagining how life would change. It's definitely a different air around the family with Bellatrix now a main component, and while Rabastan does not hate his sister-in-law, he doesn't like having to be constantly wary around her.
