Flashback: Age 16
Matters involving the Fantastic Four, present and preceding, were a matter of family for Vincent.

Matters involving Victor Von Doom were a matter of blood.

Vincent stood at the Latverian border, cloaked, with blood on his mind. He'd pinpointed where the assemblage of Symkarian and mercenary forces were preparing to make their move from. Let Kristoff fret and go through diplomacy. This country was loved by his brother, and therefore it would be protected by him. Taking a course of action that benefitted Von Doom twisted Vincent's stomach, but it was necessary. If the forces crossed the border, an area left so open as to be inviting, Von Doom would have his 'reason' enough to go to full war. It was mere inches behind his heels that the line was drawn.

As the tanks ahead set the ground to rumbling, and he could hear soldiers shouting, he raised a hand, and sharpened his gaze.

~~~
Reports are still inconclusive about the explosions, tremors, and brief wildfire near the Latverian border, but it is believed to be a training exercise along the border, with a weapons malfunction. Officials are investigating the possibility of nerve gas usage, as the unit, a dozen tanks and five hundred soldiers strong, report no memory of the incident. Injuries are widespread through the group, but no fatalities have been reported.
Kristoff was worried sick.
He'd been worried enough by what was going on, but... as relieving as it was that there were no fatalities, and nothing that could be appearing to force the Master of Latveria's hand, he was now worried sick about what --or who -- had caused the latest incident reported. He certainly had his suspicions. Damn it. His little brother, running off like that to handle this by himself.
Kristoff hurried to Vincent's room.
Vincent sat on the floor, a few med-kits already spilled open, the end of a bandage in his teeth as he tightened it. His clothes were filthy and a bloody gash ran down most of the length of his left arm. An urn with some kind of salve sat near to him, already opened.
He pointedly did not look up when Kristoff entered. His television and computer monitors were both tuned to muted news-feeds about Latveria.
Kristoff immediately stepped over and sank to his knees. "Please let me help with that. Any other injuries?" he says automatically. The sight of blood in general never bothered Kristoff. His own didn't either. But it was different with certain specific people. His stomach was in knots. So he had to handle this first, before he could address the other point.
Regarding that other point, there was a tattered cloak and some dented and dirtied bio-enhancement armor in the corner.
"I'll be fine.. I'm stable..." Vincent replied quietly, letting Kristoff help him for the bandaging, which required two hands. He reached for the salve with his now freed hand. "Asgardian physiology doesn't cooperate nicely with standard medications. I doubt I'll get sick, but an antibiotic substitute is just good sense. There's a clotting agent as well. My opponents were still using standard ballistics, rather than laser weaponry. No cauterization."
"A good idea. You should reapply it after you have cleaned up, as well." His tone implies no rush on that, just mentioning as he precisely handles the bandages. "And your physiology has no objections to witch hazel tea. Every little bit helps. I'll make some in a minute."
Even once the bandaging is handled, Kristoff's hands stay on Vincent's arm and shoulder, like he needs to make sure he's still there.
He looks at his brother earnestly. "Vincent...I..." He hesitates.
"Honey, not sugar, please." Vincent comments distractedly.
He doesn't shake off Kristoff's hold on him, but lets out a heavy sigh, looking into the distance.
"It's nothing. No worse for me than a human falling off a bike." It's not merely a physical comparison.
"Of course," Kristoff mutters, then.
Then, he shifts, tries to get Vincent to meet his eyes. "I don't think doing things like this alone without consulting people is generally a good idea, little brother, but..." And Kristoff's voice and expression shift from plain sensible concern to something much more vulnerable, very obviously and sincerely so. "But Thank you, Vincent."
"Consulting people takes time and diplomacy that the situation couldn't allow for." Vincent replies, applying the salve.
He's quiet for the duration, cleaning his hands and putting the lid back on the urn. He swallows hard before speaking again.
"It was a good day for no-one to die."
Kristoff nods.
"Any...definite presence besides the Symkarian operatives?" He asks, quite softly, gently.
Vincent visibly tenses, fumbling momentarily with the latch on one of the medi-kits. "He wasn't there, but... he knew I was."
Kristoff nods just slightly before carefully wrapping his arms more around Vincent.
He realizes the difficulties inherent in such circumstances for Vincent. The difficulty doing what he felt was right.
"Worries aside, I am very proud of you, Vincent."
Vincent returned the embrace, being cautious not to crush Kristoff with his one unimpaired arm. "I know..." He buries his face in Kristoff's shoulder.
There's a pause before he adds. "He's seen what I can do now." Vincent is uncertain as to whether this is a good or bad thing.
There's something cold in Kristoff's stomach as he remembers Doom's words eight years ago about 'until such time as my needs dictate'. But he stifles those thoughts and says, quietly, "I am sure it must have been quite a demonstration that you are not an easy target."
There's another thought that needs stifling. Nothing nearly so important as the fear of having Vincent taken away from him, or the concern for his emotional state, not by a long shot. But the thought happens, all the same, that wonders if The Master was prouder at the sight of Vincent in action than he'd ever been of the helpful, devoted battlefield assistance of the boy Doom had raised. Probably, he figured. Not that it mattered.
Other thoughts crushed, he held his brother a moment more.
