The Meeting
Donovan Burke rarely questions Frank Castle's motives or good sense; the man has lived through more scrapes in the last twenty years than most combat battalions do in their whole existence. But this meeting with Nick Fury sets off all the wrong bells and whistles in Burke's head. Frank respects this man, which should be enough for Donovan, but it's not. Not completely.

Burke remembers his dad telling him about meeting Nick Fury back in '79 during a SHIELD-US Marshals joint operation. Dad even thought highly of Nick Fury, but right now, Burke wasn't certain if Fury wouldn't just show up and try to shut him down. He didn't want a fight with any SHIELD agents, but he'd been down this road before...and he couldn't be certain that Girardson wasn't lurking in the shadows somewhere, even though he'd checked the surrounding two blocks twice before sundown.

Now, at 8pm Thursday evening, Burke parks his van three blocks away from the warehouse Fury agreed to meet in and hoofs it the rest of the way. Slipping in the back door, he checks the perimeter one more time to make sure that his escape routes are ready if he had to evacuate in a hurry. When he's satisfied that things are as ready as they can get, he pulls up two rolling desk chairs and sets them in a circle beneath an overhead light on the otherwise-vacant warehouse floor.

He takes a couple of deep breaths and makes comforts himself with the knowledge that he still has his guns.

And he waits.

"The law is there for a reason, Burke. Castle never understood that either."

Nick shook his head. He pulled a small flash drive out of a pocket and tossed it on the table.

Agree with his methods or not, Burke did prove to be useful on occasion. Like the little issue in Bogota Nick had recently become aware of.

"That's somethin' up yer alley."

Burke looks at the flash drive for a moment, debating the wisdom of getting involved with someone like Nick Fury. Fury had the information he needed, but all it would take was one too many trips to the well before SHIELD thought they owned him.

"What Frank and I understand is that the law isn't worth anything when it protects the people who break it more than the people they hurt." Burke says, reaching out to pick up the flash drive.

"I'd like to say I can trust you, Fury. You come highly praised, but this is a new day and age. The rules you and all the costumes operate by are being tossed aside by the opposition. Frank was right about a couple of things, you know. None of you were ever willing to put people like Jigsaw, Kingpin and Bullseye out of commission for good, so they started banking on that.

Now, they're not afraid when you show up. They know that all you'll do is read them their rights, stick 'em in a cell for a few months and then let them out on good behavior. How does that make anyone safer than they were before?" Burke asks, holding up the flash drive.

"You know how this is going to end if I get involved. What do you want out of it?" he asks.

SHIELD did own him, he just didn't know it yet. Nick didn't address anything Burke said.

"I want you t' get the job done," Nick said. "That's what I want."

Burke warned him. It was fair enough.

"It'll get done."

Nick knew full well what he was getting into with Burke. He had dealt with Castle enough in the past.

"Good."

With that Nick left.

Burke figured that the relationship between him and Nick Fury was going to be one of "Don't call me, I'll call you", but he had to admit to himself a grudging respect for Nick Fury. The man was bad ass personified, and those words came from Frank Castle, himself.

Burke leaves the building through the back exit and takes a longer route back to his van, just in case anyone is watching. Once he's inside, he crawls in the back and breaks out his laptop, going over the information on the flash drive.

It was just the information he'd been wanting. He'd have to book passage to Bogota ASAP in order to get down there and get to work. In the meantime, he had another hive of scum and villainy to clean out.

Starting the engine, the Punisher heads toward the warehouse district of New York to go looking for mutant-haters.
