test scene

It was just another day at Xavier's, and Alex started throwing together something to eat before going to back to reading The Shining.

Scott had been up for several hours already. His day had always started early, ever since he had been a teenager. This held especially true in recent days, when the Institute had transformed into a true school with a thriving student body. The X-Men all wore many hats these days.

He'd skipped breakfast originally, but there was enough time before lunch that he could still catch a light snack.

"Morning," he said to his brother, as he entered the kitchen.

"Good morning," Alex replied. "Do you want something to eat?"

"Just a piece of fruit, probably," Scott said. "I've got a Leadership 101 class in thirty."

Alex grabbed and apple and tossed it underhand at Scott. "How's that coming along, anyway?"

Scott caught the apple easily. "Pretty good, actually," he said. "Got some promising candidates for the next generation of X-Men."

Turning children into soldiers. Had they really come to that point? Stupid question. They'd been doing that since the Professor had drafted the first class of X-Men.

"You could guest lecture some time, you know."

"I think you're better at it." He smirked and started making some eggs.

"You've led X-Men and X-Factor teams, Alex," Scott reminded him. "Pretty successfully, I might add."

He cut up his eggs in the frying pan with the spatula. Scrambled eggs were in the making.

"I think leading is natural for us, but you're better at teaching others how to lead. But I guess I don't see anything wrong with stopping in and giving a few pointers and talking about my experience."

"Good," Scott said. "We're going to need everybody's experience with the new squad we're putting together."

"New squad?" That was interesting.

"From some of the students," Scott explained. "Bad as it is to admit, the next generation's got to come from somewhere."

Alex didn't say anything right away. It was bad to admit. "Don't you think that's rushing it? They're just kids."

"No younger than than I was when I started," he replied. "Not treating them like the next-generation of X-Men doesn't work. The New Mutants proved that."

He finished making his eggs and took the pan off the burner. "The next generation usually steps in when the current one is out of the picture. Last I checked, the current X-Men aren't dead. But Cypher is."

Scott gritted his teeth and bit down the first comment he was thinking of.

"As I recall, Alex," Scott said, carefully, "your group of X-Men left the New Mutants in Magneto's care because they couldn't be bothered with the school any more."

It was wrong of him to say, and he regretted it, but he also believed it.

"It's not like we're going to send them out to fight Apocalypse right out the gate. But they need to be prepared."

Alex pit down hard to keep himself from snapping back. Starting an argument wasn't the best thing he could do, and Alex knew that.

"Then what are you going to have them do, Scott?" He turned around and just looked at his brother. "What can they do that doesn't put them at risk? They can't just model themselves after you and be alright."

"Train them. Give the them benefit of experience that we didn't get."

He frowned. Alex was really starting to piss him off. "They're going to attract trouble, whether they want to or not. I just want them to be prepared to fight back. It's getting worse out there every day, Alex. And it's time we stopped pretending it isn't."

"How is throwing them into the fray going to prepare them? Things are getting worse, Scott. And they can't handle it. But we can. Now isn't the time to throw kids out there when we are still capable."

"And coddling them here isn't going to do them any good either," he growled. "You think I like this, Alex? I don't. But I can read the writing on the wall."

Scott clenched his fists. "You just don't get it, do you?"

There was more he could have said, but right now, it was like talking to a brick wall.

He headed out. "Enjoy the eggs," he growled.
