Character Name: Alexander ‘Alex’ Rice-Matthews
Character LJ (if applicable): http://www.scribbld.net/users/notthelantern/
Physical description (face, build, weight): Alex’s hair is a dark brown color and kept in a short and messy cut. His eyes are normally blue but glow bright green when he uses his power. He keeps himself clean shaven and his face. He’s an athletic kid and has an average build, the definition there but not incredibly noticeable. He’s about 5’10” tall and weighs around 152lbs.

His clothes are usually pretty stylish when he’s in civvies. His costume is a green and red one inspired by Alan Scott’s but without a cape. He wears the same lantern-logo on his chest though.

Age: 17
Birthday: April 2
Codename (if using one): Green Lantern
PB: (If using one.) Nicholas Hoult
Abilities: Starheart Power Ring – Mystic powered ring that allows for many abilities. Much like the rings worn by the Green Lantern Corps, it’s controlled with great willpower.

Willpower – Quite simply, Alex has a lot of it. A nearly inexhaustible supply of it infact. If he weren’t already wearing the ring he was, he could probably qualify for one of those fancy space ones.

Energy Blasts – The ring is capable of firing many types of blasts. He can fire heat blasts to melt through steel, concussive energy blasts, freezing rays that can turn water to ice, and even sprays of water if need be.

Personal Shield – Much like the rings of corpsmen, Alex’s ring generates a personal forcefield to protect him from harm. It’s automatic, defending him even if he’s unconscious and maintains an environment around him that allows him to survive the vacuum of space and other hazardous areas.

Flight – The ring lets Alex fly. In Earth’s atmosphere he can reach about Mach 2 but can go much faster outside it.

Constructs – Alex can use his ring to create solid energy constructs as long as he’s got a charge. He can make just about anything, limited only by his willpower and imagination.

Blinding – Using the ring, Alex can temporarily blind people. He uses a flash of power to disrupt the eye and blind a target for half an hour. This requires a lot on concentration and control and can’t be used in the middle of a fight.

Paralyzing – Alex is also able to use the ring to paralyze a target. He makes the ring emit a thin beam that will coat a person and make them completely unable to move any part of their body. He can selectively paralyze and unparalyze specific parts of a person but it will only last half an hour.

Phasing- Alex’s ring allows him to phase through any non-wooden solid material. This is always very obvious as a bright spot of green light appears on both sides of whatever he’s passing through.

Teleportation- With the power of the Starheart, Alex is able to teleport himself anywhere on Earth he’s been before. It’s such a draining process and takes so much power though that he only uses it in an emergency.

Magic- Unlike the rings worn by the Green Lantern Corps members, Alex’s ring is powered by the mystic energies of the Starheart. This allows it several magic-like abilities. He can sense magic or if it has been used in an area and trace it back to its source. He can also use his ring to play back a sort of recording of what magic was used in an area. It won’t be one hundred percent accurate all the time due to fading energies but he can usually get a decent reading.

Extended Lifespan – An unintended side effect of wielding the Starheart is that Alex’s lifespan has been extended quite a lot. He’ll remain young and strong for a long time. Of course no one has any idea about this.

Weaknesses and flaws:
Ring Dependant: Without the ring, Alex is a normal guy. He knows how to fight and still has willpower but without the ring, he’s not superpowered.

Wood Flaw: Amazing as the ring is, it has no affect on wood. Stuff made of wood can’t be lifted or blasted by the ring and shields it make can’t stop wooden projectiles. By extension, the ring’s power is much less effective against plant matter.

Recharge: Every twenty-four hours, the ring needs to be recharged by touching it to his lantern for ten seconds. Only the contact is required but an oath can be recited to aid in focus.

Overconfident: While Alex’s confidence and self-assurance have been good for him and help him use his ring to such great ability, he can and will sometimes bite off more than he can chew. He’s not stranger to having to have someone save him cause he got in over his head but at least he’s learning.

Character location/Home: Los Angeles, California
Alignment (villain, hero etc): Hero
Team: JSA
Relatives (living/dead?): Todd Rice (adopted father), Damon Matthews (adopted father), Jade (adopted aunt), Kyle Rayner (adopted uncle), Alan Scott (adopted grandfather), Rose Canton (adopted grandmother, dead), Mikaela Rayner ( adopted cousin), Biological Parents (names and status unknown)

Backstory: A child left to be a ward of the state under Safe-Haven Laws, Alex didn’t know any parents for the start of his life. Thankfully, he didn’t stay a ward of the state for too long. He was adopted by Todd Rice and Damon Matthews.

For the most part, Alex’s life went on pretty normally. He went to school, he had friends, and he played little league baseball. What was different…aside from having two fathers…was that most of his friends were superhero kids with powers of their own. Alex never manifested any of his own but he didn’t let it slow him down.

He did have aspirations to become a hero one day despite neither of his parents being all that thrilled with the idea. He trained hard to keep in shape and one day join in the heroics. Eventually, when spending a week with Grandpa Alan while his fathers were out on a trip, Alex ended up caught up in a little super-brawl. Despite being very irritated by the fact that he had to ‘go take cover’, Alex still ended up caught in the fight. He got a bit hurt but still managed to play a part in beating a bad guy.

A year later, Alex got a birthday present from Alan. The old hero had decided to re-empower his old ring and lantern and passed them on to his grandson. Alex was thrilled even if his fathers weren’t entirely happy. And for the past year he’s been the new Green Lantern with plans to join up with the JSA just like his father.

How do you plan to introduce the character to the game?: I’m planning to have him show up at the Brownstone to show off his fancy ring.

What are you planning to do with this character?: Join in with some of the adventures of the JSA, maybe meet some of the other Lanterns out there, and general hero stuff.

What do you want to see happen with this character?: I’d like to see him get better with the ring and heroics in general and maybe get better at learning not to be so overconfident all the time. I was also thinking about a plot where he got hurt and his parents tried to talk him out of heroics or something. Just a vague idea.

Please include a sample post/scene:

“Space shuttle…cat…race car…lamp…” Alex trails off idly, creating and banishing constructs as he lays on his bed. He’s got one arm behind his head, the other lifted and bearing the glowing power ring.

“I wonder,” he mutters, peering at the ring curiously. “Naw. That’d be really weird,” he mutters, rolling off his bed. With a flash of green, civilian clothes vanish into the red and green garb of the Green Lantern. He walks over to his door and opens it enough to poke his masked head out. “Hey, Dads! I’m going out flying for awhile! I’ll be back by dinner!” he calls. Not waiting for a reply, he opens his window with a bright green hand.

“My adoring public awaits,” he chuckles before flying out into the warm California sky.
