Duncan “Chance” Moore

NAME: Duncan “Chance” Moore
AGE/BIRTHDAY: May 11th, 1995
GRADE: Junior
CLASS: Middle.  He’s an orphan living with his aunt.

FAMILY: He’s an orphan living with his aunt.  She isn’t really the loving affectionate type he’s used to.  She tends to just throw money at him and call that love.
SEXUALITY: Straight.  Really innocent
ACTIVITIES: Not much.  He’s not very athletic but he likes to go to games and dances.

APPEARANCE: Chase has an easy manor about him.  He’s not too tall at 5’9” but he’s okay.  With floppy blonde hair that hangs in his blue eyes, Chase looks like he a breath of fresh air.  His smile comes easily, but rarely touches his eyes.  He’s not exactly brooding, but he’s quiet and keeps to himself.  He has a few friends, but he wants to be a doctor someday and is really focused on doing well in school and getting into a good college.  He’s not very touchy feely, but he’s very affectionate in the way he looks at people and listens to them.  He’s always the shoulder to cry on, though people know little about his past.  He’s focused on his goals, his dreams, and being a good Christian boy.
PLAYED BY: Austin Butler

LIKES: Jesus above all things is Christ who saved us.  Having fun, the good clean kind like movies and fishing and museums and the lake.  Talking to people for hours.  Being there for people no matter what.

DISLIKES: His aunt.  Injustice.  Cheaters.

STRENGTHS: Loyalty.  He would sit up all night listening to someone, holding them while they cry.  He loves people, loves being with them and there for them.  He’s intelligent.  He takes all AP classes to try and get credits out of the way for college because he wants to save lives, spiritually and physically.

WEAKNESSES: He doesn’t open up.  He talks about superficial things, things to show he cares and is someone’s friend, but he’s guarded and doesn’t talk about the things that would reveal the depth of who he is, as witnessed by his somewhat deadened eyes.  He needs someone to tell him it’s ok to be happy.

DETAILED PERSONALITY: Chance is an old soul.  He sees things for more that what they are.  Partially because of the tragedy he felt so young, but he also has this way of focusing on the positive and weeding out what doesn’t really matter.  And he understands that in spite of this, a broken heart is a broken heart.  He sits up and waits, often for hours, with someone who is wounded to help ease their pain.

But he’s not all serious business.  Chance likes to have fun.  He plays sports as an enjoyment, pick up games and the like.  He’s quick with a smile or a silly reply.  Though he leads with his heart, he uses his brain.  He’s sort of weary and tired in a how he approaches the world, with his what is really, truly important attitude.  He’s fun and nice.  He likes people, likes playing games, but the way he is there for people is by far his best quality.

HISTORY: Chance has lived in Chicago all his like.  He was born to Topher and Annabelle Moore.  They tried for years to have a baby, without any success.  Doctors couldn’t help them.  It was all just a big mess.  And when Annabelle finally got pregnant they couldn’t believe it.  Topher, a Non-Denominational Christian preacher, lived every day with his wife praying for that child.  After a difficult pregnancy where they thought they had lost him, they were blessed with a beautiful baby bay.  And though they named him Duncan, everyone called him Chance.

Their family was very close and tight knit.  They did everything together.  Movies.  Hanging out on the weekends.  Church on Sunday and Wednesday nights.  Even though they didn’t have a lot, Chance always felt at home and unwanting because of the abundance of love he was surrounded by.  They talked about love, life, family everything.  And when Chance was 13, he stood in front of his congregation and took a True Love Waits pledge.  His father had the privilege of handing him his “I am my Beloved” ring, which he wears proudly on his thumb.  As he took his seat he saw his mom crying, her face so filled with pride for this little boy that was growing into a man.

It was the last happy memory he had.

Because two months later, at the fair, he got separated from his parents.  He called them, tried to find them, but couldn’t.  On the way back to the car he heard shouting and a woman cry.  He came around the corner and saw two masked men holding his parents at gunpoint.  And before he could react, they pulled the triggers and shot them each in the chest.  Disappearing into the shadows, Annabelle’s purse dangling from their hands, they left.  Chance ran to them, and held their hands with whispered I love yous as they both left this world for the next.  The doctors tried to save them, the cardiologists tried so hard he knew.  But as he sat in the waiting room with blood on his hands and tear streaks on his face, he knew that their souls were gone.

His father’s sister took him in then, but she didn’t know much about raising a child.  Especially a young teenage boy.  She threw money at him from his pension when he seemed sad or lonely, but mostly Chance just kept to himself.  He spent a lot of time writing letters to his parents, telling them about his day, his dreams.  It was like they could keep a dialogue going in his head just like nothing had ever happened.  He went to a counselor who said he was remarkably well-adjusted.  And a lot of that could be said for his friends.

He never talked to anyone about what really happened, what he saw, the pain he felt every day at the loss of his parents.  But his friends were there for him.  They took him to movies and other innocent sort of fun places.  He would have been lost without their support.  And with his gentle nature and compassion, he was always the one that was there for his friends.  He was their shoulder, their rock.  He listened to them and held them when they cried.  He was everything to many of them.

And yet, in spite of all of these friendships, Chance won’t pursue a relationship.  He’s determined to go to school and become a cardiologist so he focuses on that.  He also focuses on the promise he made and the silver ring he hopes to give to his wife on their wedding day.  He’s often seen twirling it around his finger like some sort of worry stone.  And it’s not for lack of opportunity.  He’s had a couple of girlfriends, several girls that tried to kiss him, but he keeps them at arms length.  He’s only had two little pecks of kisses in his lifetime because he couldn’t bring himself to do more.  Not that he didn’t like it, he just wants to feel a really deep connection with someone before they do anything physical.  He’s a good boy, through and through.  Though that could also be because he keeps people at arm’s length and hasn’t found anyone he’s felt comfortable enough to open up with.
