"He's so immature, I just--can you believe he would---UGH!"
Seemingly too disgusted to finish her thoughts properly, Meredith settled for crossing her arms dramatically over her chest and pushing back into the yellow-and-black couch. The Hufflepuff common room was nearly deserted at this time of night, all except for the two Fielding twins... and really, it was no wonder. It was bloody two AM.
Ainsley rubbed at sleepdusted eyes from next to his sister and pulled his knees up to his chest. He could have leaned his head back and gone to sleep right then and there so easily, but when Meredith grabbed you by the back of your pajamas and dragged you down the stairs in the middle of the night to have a rant, you could hardly say no... She was unnaturally strong for a girl of her size, and it did not help that he had somehow turned out to be the smaller of the two of them.
Still... He wished she had waited until morning.
Meredith noticed her brother's yawn and sighed loudly, suddenly feeling a little deflated. This was ridiculous of her, wasn't it? Waking up your brother to complain about boy troubles. It was just... she had gotten in from sneaking out with her date with Meredin (it should have been a sign, that they had basically the same name... that wasn't kosher, was it?) and the very first person she had thought to go to vent to was Ainsley. It was always Ainsley, even when she had a perfectly good dorm of roommates just up the other stairs.
"I'm sorry, Ains," she said, running a hand through her hair. "I know it's late."
Immediately, he felt guilty.
It was hard to describe in words, but they had always had a bond. He supposed that after spending nine months together in the womb, you just weren't the same as siblings who hadn't experienced that closeness. As a twin brother, even though you were a boy, you just weren't the same as a group of girlfriends, and well... it would be a lie to say Meredith would not have done the same for him. It would be a lie to say that he would not have run straight to her if it had been him.
"No way," he reassured her. Through the sleepiness, he managed a genuine smile. "I'd be offended if you'd hollered up at anyone else." Reaching over, he threw an arm around the blonde's shoulder and pulled her in close.
Meredith smiled softly and buried her head in Ainsley's shoulder, suddenly feeling the frustration ebb and give way to exhaustion. That was, until a voice rang in her ear...
"But you know you owe me your Charms notes for this, right?" |
