CURRENT STATE OF POWERS:
Currently, Aphrodite is at a loss for her phenomenal cosmic powers, like all her siblings and relatives. But since people still readily remember her name and invoke her to some degree, she is not without a source of it entirely. She can still use her powers to make people fall in love, but it isn’t true love. At least, not right away. Mostly though, she avoids using her powers for that, instead using her knowledge of people to put them simply in the right place at the right time. Since she is a goddess of lust, she can still make a mortal’s veins leap with the fires of passion, but not from a distance greater than a few feet away, and not for anyone that they weren’t at least moderately attracted to in the first place. She couldn’t make you burn for someone you found repulsive, no matter how hard she tried at this point. She still has a knack for brewing potions and making beauty products, but she only infuses them with a bare touch of magic if needed at this point.
Most of the enchantments that she had done as a matter of course in the golden age of her powers, she now has neither the ability nor the desire to do. Most of the time. She has toyed with the idea of making cows horns grow on a few heads in the last few centuries, but has never given in to the temptation. Well, not yet in any case.
SKILLS & ABILITIES: Desi has learned to be very good at making herbal and natural beauty products, and is a fair hand a brewing potions still. She doesn’t usually practice these skills for just anyone, however, only in special cases, and for herself. She can weave and sew, embroidery being a favorite. She also has learned how to read people fairly well, getting them able to open up to her about things like they were talking to an old lover who just came to town for the night. Desi dances still, and has been known from time to time to be a ‘guest dancer’ at the upscale gentleman’s clubs in whatever city she is in at the time. She always calls ahead to book that though.
She knows how to use facial expression to the best of their ability. Without the use of magic to turn heads if she needed to, Desi has learned how to use a well placed smouldering look, or a raised eyebrow, or a sultry pout. Knowing how to turn people’s heads is a skill too, and she can do that with a hip shake, or by crossing her arms. It’s all in the attitude you present, and she knows every move. Well, when she feels like she should use it. There haven’t been too many opportunities lately, unfortunately.
MORTAL ALIAS: Desiree “Desi” Zayn
MORTAL AGE: 28, or thereabouts
RESIDENCE: Currently residing in a Hilton suite, Desi is in the market for a rooftop apartment somewhere in Chicago, possibly the Gold Coast but she’s not holding her breath.
OCCUPATION: Area representative and marketing research for Burt’s Bees.
PLAYED BY: Christina Hendricks
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Desi is on the tall side for a woman, about 5’10”. Her hair is red, sometimes redder than not, which she attributes to using color enhancers. She is curvy, on the slender side, but with big (BIG) breasts, full hips, and a well defined rear. Certainly no waif, and more of a classical beauty.
She tends to wear things that are a little more old fashioned for the modern era. Classic styles, simple elegance, well tailored clothing that enhances her figure without flaunting it on a body that just doesn’t quit. Her real indulgence these days is her clothing, followed by her lust for a good apartment. Chicago seems like a good place to be for a while.
HOW HAS LIVING AMONG MORTAL AFFECTED YOUR CHARACTER?:
In the old days, Aphrodite had heroes, gods and mortals alike trying to prove themselves worthy of her glance and a smile, let alone any of her lusty attention. Now, however, she finds herself stuck in bars with mortal men who are most definitely not to her liking, using cheesy pick-up lines to try and get her into bed without so much as a call the day after. She finds herself more than a little jaded by a few millenia of that.
She adapted to mortal life fairly well, though it was difficult to make the transition at first. Thank goodness for prostitutes and their street-sense.
PERSONALITY:
Desi picked up the habit of sarcasm some time about a century after she was forced to live as a mortal and hasn’t given it up yet. Sarcasm is her first line of defense, and can be a great offense in the game of love. It has actually gotten her more dates in recent years than any other pick-up technique out there.
She’s gotten out of the habit of letting her emotions show, since in this day and age, discretion is the better option in her opinion. So she has become fairly reserved in her personality, since there are fewer people who know her quirks around and she doesn’t want to attract a lot of attention because she’s acting the way she always has. Besides, millenia-old inside jokes between deities are hardly a good thing to laugh about in this day and age.
Loving everything as she always has is becoming much harder now as the time becomes more modern and further away from the glory of the past. These mortals have a great deal of fear for the things that they can’t understand, and there are many more taboos now than there ever were in the Greece of her time. Homosexuals, polyamory, and many other things are so frowned upon that it makes her weep sometimes for the state of the world. She used to spout off about it when the mood struck her, but now she tends to just keep her mouth shut.
Not really liking reading as a form of entertainment, Desi is the type who likes to go to museums and see old friends, so to speak. There are pictures and statues and reliefs, pottery shards and mosaics, and even modern interpretations in all mediums of her family and friends from back in the day, and she likes to look at how mortals used to view her. It’s a habit she picked up when people started unearthing things from the ground and put them all in one place to be looked at and studied, and it is something she would be hard pressed to stop doing. She reminisces about the old days, and has been known to get quite maudlin about it when she’s had a bit more to drink than she should.
PERSONAL HISTORY:
Aphrodite was born unlike any other Olympian, having sprung from the sea when Cronos’ genitals and the water met. She arrived fully grown, having no childhood whatsoever. And she was beautiful. Well, of course, since she was the goddess of love and beauty she was pretty much guaranteed to be gorgeous.
It was more than just looks, though. She was clever, if not actually smart, and very dedicated to her purpose. Making mortals and demi-gods fall in love, quests and heros who needed her guidance and aid, lovers by the score, mortal and immortal, Aphrodite had a good existance. It wasn’t always fun, and it wasn’t all parties with Dionysus, but there were far more good things than bad, and she had children and lovers, and worship aplenty.
For a while, anyway.
The worshippers started to not be so plentiful, the hymns not as loud or melodious. The heroes stopped coming as frequently, and then they stopped altogether. The earthquake that shook Olympus down was the final nail in the coffin, so to speak. Aphrodite found herself with only a smattering or worshippers, a few parlor tricks to her name, and a headache that didn’t go away for a week. She did find her way to a brothel that was still in operation, some of the girls still dedicated to her, though for most it was, ahem, lip service only. From there, she recovered from the headache, but never from the sense of loss for what she had.
Desi started traveling around, once she had figured out that not only had the gods departed, but that she was without a steady supply of worship to draw from. There were centuries where nothing happened, and places she visited where she ended up no better than the poor who were already on the street. But she always had the drawback of history’s oldest profession (Thank you very much) and had the ability to make money wherever she went, at least. Men would talk in their gathering places, separate from the women, about the one with the fire in her hair, who would murmur “This too is sacred” in their ears.
Wandering became a part of her essential makeup for many, many centuries. Sometimes she would stay only a few months, learning what she could and doing what she could to make sure that she had some sort of power base, even if she couldn’t quite make things as sacred as she wanted to. There were many times she tried to stay in an area for longer than that. For example, Desi had a wonderful time in Renaissance Italy and France. Even if that Botticelli guy used some other model instead of her, at least her figure was lent to many paintings and sculptures from that time. Some of which even bear her name. It was a time of love and beauty and intelligence and art, and she had a glorious time. It almost made it easy to start loving all those mortals again.
Leaving Europe was one of the hardest things that Desi had ever done. It meant leaving behind everything she had come to love, but after a certain amount of time there, she was starting to feel the need for something new, something exciting. She traveled to China and the far east, spending time with geisha and artists, with mortal lovers of the exotic, and learned their customs and the ways of their people. Coming back to Europe for the last time, she made sure that she and her son Eros wouldn’t be forgotten too easily.
Crossing the ocean was surprisingly easy for her after that. It was like she knew that there would always be something of hers that she would leave behind. Coming to the new world was like a slap in the face for her though. These people were... crude. Their jokes, their mannerisms, their way of talking and their clothing were just so... juvenile to her. She decided to stay and wander frequently so that maybe she could try to change that a little for the better.
She wandered for a time, sometimes settling here and there when the mood struck her, until she moved to South Carolina at the end of the 1880’s. It was beautiful in the south after the Civil War’s scars had started to fade from the land, the men were genteel still, and she was able to relax and rest there, moving about as a southern gentlewoman of good breeding. She stayed there, passing herself off as someone’s sister before moving into the city to get away from those who could see she wasn’t aging quite like normal. Once it reached the middle of the 1900’s, she thought it might be time to move on and instead went to Atlanta, Georgia. Once she came into contact with the company she now works for, Desi knew that she had something good for a while at least. And when the company asked her to scout out an area for a new base of operations, she decided that Chicago might be a great place to start over again.
WRITING SAMPLE:
NUH UH. I DUN WANNA, AND YOU CAN’T MAKE ME
PLOT IDEAS: I would love for her husband to rear his ugly (LOL) head at some point, since she’s very much done with him at this point. The presence of Ares in game would be interesting for her, because she would love to spark up the old romance that they had. I would also like for there to be a genuine nice guy who tries to get her out of her jaded thoughts on relationships.
HOW DID YOU FIND US?: Dowsing.
