Test Scene

Martin gives his fingers a preparatory wiggle as he looks down at the table he’s set up in the middle of the room. No place like the Sanctum Sanctorum to try out a new spell. He’s drawn out the seal on the table, gotten all the materials ready and placed the books aside. Theoretically he was just compressing some air to liquid form, but practically it required a lot of pressure. Pressure he was hoping to create with magic, a lot of it.

“Can’t forget the most important part!” Martin dashes over and grabs the top hat he’s placed on a nearby bookshelf and flips it onto his head. One tip of the hat down over his forehead and he’s ready. “Lucky magic hat let’s do our thing!”

One last finger flex and he claps his hands together to build up power in them, once they start glowing a bright blue he holds his hands out and starts whispering under his breath. Magic seals appear and form around the area above the table. As they glow brighter and brighter the symbols and writing within them start to fill until complete. Martin waits for the seals to contact one another and clenches his teeth, now for the grunt work. Letting the amount of magic he’s releasing increase slowly increase, the seals start to move towards the center of the table and the area within them becomes smaller and smaller. He slowly brings his hands closer and closer together as the light of the seals becomes even brighter.

*BAM* He forces his hands together at the last few centimetres creating a burst of power. Now to wait until the magic in the room dissipates to see if it worked…

Still pressing his hands together he waits until the air clears and…
“Yes!” Martin jumps into the air and fist pumps the moment he sees the little sealed cube of liquid.

“I did it! Another win for Martin and his lucky hat!”

There’s more celebration dancing and the next fist pump send sparks of magic out, some of which hit a nearby chair. Well, it’s no longer a chair now.

The former chair looks up at him, “Ribbit”.

“Oh shoot! No no no, not again.”

Scrambling over to the toad he’s on his knees in front of it, hands hovering over the poor thing. “Okay, at least I’ve done this before.” He taps the toad simultaneously with both his index fingers glowing blue. A puff of smoke and it’s back to its chair form.

“Phew, at least Dr. Strange didn’t see that one.”

High spikes of magic drew Marlow like a moth to a flame. It didn't matter where it happened, her curiosity wouldn't let her keep from knowing who did it and if they were friendly.

The Sanctum Sanctorum was a familiar place and easy for her to appear in with a transport spell.

"He won't need to. The chair is toad colored."

"Ah!" Her suprise entrance almost makes him fall over. Martin glances at the toad-chair sheepishly.

"I can never quite get that part right..." He throws her a embarassed smile. "Think you can help me? I was trying out a new compression spell. The toad was just a...side effect."

He takes off the lucky magic top hat and waves it around. "But guess what?! It totally worked! The compression spell I mean. Perfectly! My lucky hat is on a winning streak!"

It was a great hat and Marlow gave it an appreciative nod. Not that she believed it was lucky or magical, but a sorcerer's belief made all the difference.

She went to the chair and ran a hand over the arm. Editing spells was hard. She might have to break it completely, which meant the toad would appear for a second before returned to its former unspelled state. The toad had been a living, breathing thing for that few seconds. It would be again, and she would be depriving it of life.

"What did you compress?"

It's certainly not lucky, but it is magical. One of the few things he can touch without worrying about accidents. Thank you Dr. Strange's enchantments. That and it made a great storage space, he kept his favourite spell book inside.

He watches her at work, hoping that maybe he'll pick up on something. "Oh, just air. Thought I'd start there, I figured if it went wrong it couldn't be as bad as some other stuff."

"Depends on the air," she said absently and spoke the incantation to break his spell on the chair. The chair gave a great shiver (Martin's magic was strong, she had to really try), flashed back through the toad form to the original chair. The legs bumped the floor one last time before it came to a rest.

"I was three thousand miles away and I felt your spell. You're really getting into it."

"That's true, I didn't think of it!" Impressed she's gotten the chair back to it's original colour, he claps enthusiastically. Well, more like holds his hat in his hand and claps against that, any actually clapping would get them more toads. "Wow, you're awesome as ever! Thanks a ton!"

"Oops, yeah I'm still not very good at controlling how much magic I let out. Dr. Strange says you only get better with experience but I really don't have much..."

"The experience part takes time and practice." She grinned at Martin. "You must be doing okay. Dr. Strange isn't here standing over you with that look on his face that says he's afraid the world will blow up but he doesn't want to alarm you... He did that with me for awhile when I started practicing magic on purpose."

That had been when she was about six years old, but she didn't mention that part to Martin. Not everyone got to be in training before they realized what they were.

"Well I'm doing my best at practicing but as you can see there's sometimes...problems." He waves his hat in the general direction of the former toad.

Martin can't help but laugh remembering that exact expression Dr. Strange had. "He did that at the very beginning but with my hands and since the whole weird aging thing I think he's given me some slack. Not much but still. I even promised I'd only try out the low level spells on my own. So far I haven't screwed up too badly." Of course, turning furniture into small animals wasn't a big screw up in his book.

He goes over to grab the spellbook he's placed on a nearby table and shoves it back into his hat. "I was thinking of trying out some crimefighting for practice. You know, like you do. But smaller stuff of course! No big cosmic or magic stuff like Dr. Strange! It can't hurt right?"

He's banking on the fast learner thing, right now he's all power no control. And what better way to practice than to help people?

"You have to be careful. You'll seriously hurt somebody if they're not strong enough to take it," Marlow said with her wisest nod. "With the Defenders I only have to fight really powerful villains."

Martin listens very carefully and nods. "I know. I've really got to be careful with my power control if I don't want to hurt anyone."

"Thanks a ton Marlow." To show his thanks he decides to show her something he learned recently because he knows she'll like it . A quick flick of his fingers causes a burst of sparks that turn to sparkles. It's not a very complex spell but he's proud of it. Once the sparkles fade away he gives her his best 'thank you' grin.
