Background History:

It isn't fair to say that Temari wasn't a happy child. She had a nice home, a mother who took care of her, and a father with a comfortable career. She had everything a child needed to be raised happily. On the other hand, she also had to deal with the minor dysfunctions of her family.

There was her father, who never missed an opportunity to tell her how disappointing she was. How he always wanted a group of sons to carry on his legacy, and how right off the bat he was met with her and her failings. How she never did anything right, and that she would never meet the standards of the family. And her mother, who was often not in her right mind and let Temari believe that everything her father said was right by never saying anything at all. Then her brothers, who... Well her brothers were just what they were. A violent goth and a hapless giant. None of them were very close. It could have been the atmosphere of their parents (or their father, in the case of Gaara) keeping them emotionally distant, or it could have been the unique personal flaws of each of the siblings. Either way, Temari was very much left to take care of herself.

However she did not take her anger out on her brothers. No, they had their own issues and she wouldn't slap on hers to go along with them. At a young age, she took it out on her classmates or teachers. The playground bully who insults everyone constantly, always gets into trouble and has no friends? That was Temari. In the time after her mother died, she was a violent, angry, wretched little girl. Her file in the Washington Elementary School's principal's office was three inches thick. Eventually after instance after instance of being sent home or suspended only to earn more degrading slights from her father she knew it had to stop. She had to be better than this. She could be better than this. She could be a great, successful, intelligent person if for nothing else than to prove that bastard wrong. To start off with, she would need some friends.

Every child at school could pretty much be counted out. Temari had a reputation as the rather mean and insufferable sort. Thusly, the only logical alternative was to go to someone within her family. She chose her larger, less mentally unstable brother. Kankuro was reluctant to bond with her, being, of course, skeptical of her motives, but over time they did connect on some level and she learned that it wasn't as hard to make friends as she had made it up in her head to be. So once she hit middle school, she was finally armed with the tools she needed. The next year, in her introduction to middle school, she didn't instantly make enemies with her teachers, fellow students, or faculty, so her plan was a brilliant success. Without the impediment of being distracted by rivalries with everyone around her, she could focus her energies on making good grades and creating opportunities for herself through extracurricular activities. She excelled in all her classes, made comfortable relationships with tolerable people, and let out all her anger at her father out through sports and mild academic competition with her classmates.

She would get into a good school, get a well paying job, have a successful career, and make her father eat his taunts through a bendy straw.
