Apologies for not getting on...
...but the last week or so have been a whirlwind.
Two jobs, the first of which I start on Tuesday.
An interview at the local "big-box discount store" on Monday.
FEMA disaster assistance forms.
Red Cross forms.
Unemployment forms.
An invitation to blog for the Victoria Advocate.
And finally, on Thursday, a call from my father and William! Turns out that they stayed with the house thopugh the storm, and narrowly avoided disaster when a dead tree fell across both bedrooms. Absolutely crushed my father's room, and damaged my brother's--thankfully neither of them were inside. Didn't get all the details--cellphones suck--but apparently the floodwaters didn't get into the house at all! (Like most of the older houses in N.O., theirs was raised about 2-3 feet, on cinderblocks. Because the ground was so marchy, houses tended to sink, ds putting them on blocks made the inevitable chore of raising/levelling them easier.) They were, however, high enough that they were trapped inside till Monday, when they flagged down a passing National Guard truck. From there they were taken to the Convention Center--thankfully cleaned up somewhat by then, and being used as a transit point--and sent on ot a shelther outside Shereveport, LA.
That same day, they closed the local Red Cross Shelter--there were only a few of us using it--and instead gave us two week vouchers at local hotels. Those can be extended if necessary, but we hope to have an apartment by then.
And on top of all that, I've been loaned a computer. Hopefully I'll be able to get online on a vaguely regular basis soon.
