Very AU: Exiles Road
She fell in the sand with a WHUMPH, and followed the smell of coffee and muffins to a man who couldn't be haggled with. He told her horrifying stories about her father turning into a bigoted monster, and said the only way to stop it was to work with his people.

Cindy wasn't happy about any of this, anything was better than letting that happen to Daddy, to the world, if by some chance this guy was for real. So. Okay. Here she was, standing on some bizarre street, surrounded by bizarre people.

And.... wow.

"Thanks. Seriously. Now, though, let's focus on something that isn't work for a bit."

She blinks. "Uhm... ok... like?" Its clearly been a while since Sarah and 'not work' have gone together.

"Children's literature. Favorite Olympic sport. Acoustic musical instruments as opposed to electric. Take your pick."

"Let's see... we didn't really have many books. A few things they borrowed from the suburb of Colorado that got pulled in, and some alien things we learned to translate. Kurt used to tell us some German fairy tales from memory though... Colossus the same. I'm not sure I'd recognize them if I read more standard translations... hmm...

I haven't seen the Olympics. Ever. I heard about them. Uhm... they play baseball in the Olympics, right? My dad loved baseball. I'd love to see a game.

And... acoustic. Definitely acoustic. The others are tricky... that one, I'm sure of.... and you?"

"The traditional fairy tales must have been awesome. Did Kurt ever tell you the Princess and the Swans? The original? I loved that. None of the waiting around being pretty; she worked her rear off to lift that freaking curse. And I really like the track stuff at the Olympics, but baseball's nice, too. I always went to the softball games at school. Maybe we'll manage to catch one sometime. And acoustic, yeah. Me too."

"He did, he loved that one. Granted, every time he told them, they changed a little, but still. Piotr was more consistent in his tellings. As for the Olympics... yeah, I don't really know. I know the concept, but really never saw it on Battleworld, and everything since has been the guerilla war, or this. What's your favorite music?"

"The Beatles. Melissa Etheridge, Foxglove, some Broadway stuff... you've probably never heard of Mika. On the less acoustic end, I do love the Pet Shop Boys."

"Very, very acoustic, or totally alien. There were a number of natives taken along for the ride, just as stuck as we were. Some of the heroes and former villains had some musical talent. Johnny Storm managed to trade for some CDs, as did a few others, but kind of in bits and pieces. I knew some children's songs, heard of a fair amount that was pre-1990 or so, I guess. And I've gotten some music education in worlds since, a little. But pop culture references will be wildly hit and miss, I'm afraid."

"Well... this hotel rents movies and stuff, right? If there's anything you want to watch, there's plenty of room on the bed for two."

She totally did not mean that the way it could be taken. Well... maybe a little... she is cute, and looks kind of cuddly and...

ok, maybe she did, but only sort of.

"Right. Okay." Cindy, lobstered again, climbs onto the bed beside her and uses the remote to turn on the TV to the movie channels. "I'll try answering any questiosn you've got to figure out which one to watch."

"Great." And they'll settle in for backroom dealing, a little romance, and patriotism. Conniving, comic relief, and strength of character.
