Iota was very young at the time. She didn't understand what they were saying when they took her from her work -- small or not, she was old enough to work, and tiny, quick hands could be mores useful than strong grown ones for some tasks -- and brought her to the fire pits. They put something on her, and then there was the sound. So loud. And then she was somewhere else. And people were staring at her clothes, confused.
But eventually a person showed up who stared without confusion: the lady with the long red hair. She was so pretty! Well fed and healthy, and there was something in her eyes, that she knew Iota. Knew her even if she'd never met her. She took her hand, and brought her somewhere with food. Other people, too, but ...food. They -- the pretty lady, the lady with the knives, and the big man -- let her have food. So much. It was amazing.
That night, the Furies came. Iota wouldn't understand about the tracker until she was older. She knew she didn't want to go back, didn't want anyone to go back.
...And it was soon clear she'd never have to, because when the fighting was done for the night, the trap hadn't worked. The Furies had to leave.
Iota's lived with Momma and Mae ever since, and they and Uncle Bane and her cousins are the best, and she's not going anywhere; she's worked hard at fighting as much like Mae as she can, even if she has to do it a little differently, and the work is so much fun sometimes, and she never goes hungry.
