Babysitting. Sort of.
Thank you for flying Egypt Air.

It had been the longest flight ever.  As soon as the captain made the announcement of gratitude in both English and Egyptian Nic was on her feet, snatching her carry-on from the overhead bin and hurrying down the aisle.  Dad hadn't sprung for first class or even business class, deciding instead to ship her back to St. Roch in coach.  She still didn't understand that decision, nor did she fully understand why precisely her parents had decided a month before the end of the regular school year that she needed to go back home, enroll in summer school and live with her brother.  For once she hadn't gotten into any trouble on a dig, had behaved herself, and was actually kind of enjoying things.  The deserts outside of Cairo were pretty neat and Cairo itself was really cool.  Nic had spent lots of time roaming the city, exploring, hanging out, flirting with hot Egyptian boys.

Oh.  THAT was it.  Well.  Whatever.  She was still irked.  A multi-hour flight across the Atlantic hadn't fixed that at all and she was still a bit annoyed as she plowed her way through the human traffic at St. Roch International to get to baggage claim.  She wanted her freaking mace back in her hand where it belonged and as soon as she saw it come around the carousel she snatched up with a snarl, startling a businessman who had been reaching for his own bag next to her.  Still growling a little, she made her way out of the airport, hoping Rex remembered that TODAY was the day she was flying in.

"Ha. Ha. And Ha again. No beer for you kid. Carter and Mom will kill me." he says.

She says that Mom looks happy and a sad smile crosses his his lips. Rex was happy for her, for both them, he really was...but something about that still hurt a lot.

Nic was going to get to do something nice for her father on Father's Day. Some people weren't so lucky.

"And I'm fine, really. There was a situation while you were gone, but it seems Carter didn't hear about it, otherwise he'd have been on my ass. I got it fixed, though." he says.

"Oh come on! It's not like I'd have more than one and not like I'd leave the apartment. I'd sit my happy ass right down on the couch, watch some bad tv, and drink. It'd be fine. Mom and Dad would never know and hey, if they ever found out you could tell them you were trying to teach me a lesson or something. Dad'd totally buy it."

She does, however, look concerned when he mentions a situation.

"What happened, Rex?"

Her first thought was that he'd done something stupid because while her brother didn't like to talk about his issues, she knew what they were. Sometimes, she felt guilty for even existing, knowing the situation about his own father's disappearance.

"No beer, kid. Besides, you have school. We'll revisit this topic when school's out." he says.

He drives on for a minute, before answering her question.

"Someone managed to make the gargoyles at the St. Roch Cathedral come to live and they started killing people. People assumed because that they had wings, and I have wings...yeah.

So, the torch-and-pitchfork brigade wanted me like Mick Jagger wanted leather pants in the 60's. With some help, I found out it was woman whose husband and daughter were killed by the Rollin' 60's street gang. Cops didn't find who did it, but me and...a friend did.

So we brought 'em to justice. People still think I'm a menace, though." Rex says.

"Shit, Rex. This isn't good at all."

She noted the "friend".

"Fuck. How can I help you fix up your image?"
