Babysitting. Sort of.
Thank you for flying Egypt Air.

It had been the longest flight ever.  As soon as the captain made the announcement of gratitude in both English and Egyptian Nic was on her feet, snatching her carry-on from the overhead bin and hurrying down the aisle.  Dad hadn't sprung for first class or even business class, deciding instead to ship her back to St. Roch in coach.  She still didn't understand that decision, nor did she fully understand why precisely her parents had decided a month before the end of the regular school year that she needed to go back home, enroll in summer school and live with her brother.  For once she hadn't gotten into any trouble on a dig, had behaved herself, and was actually kind of enjoying things.  The deserts outside of Cairo were pretty neat and Cairo itself was really cool.  Nic had spent lots of time roaming the city, exploring, hanging out, flirting with hot Egyptian boys.

Oh.  THAT was it.  Well.  Whatever.  She was still irked.  A multi-hour flight across the Atlantic hadn't fixed that at all and she was still a bit annoyed as she plowed her way through the human traffic at St. Roch International to get to baggage claim.  She wanted her freaking mace back in her hand where it belonged and as soon as she saw it come around the carousel she snatched up with a snarl, startling a businessman who had been reaching for his own bag next to her.  Still growling a little, she made her way out of the airport, hoping Rex remembered that TODAY was the day she was flying in.

Despite the crazy of the previous night, Rex did, in fact, remember that his little sister was flying in today. He'd gotten up on time, showered, and tried to pick up his apartment just a little to make it presentable for her.

He even pushed the beer to the back of the fridge, knowing his sister didn't like that he drank.

He's holding a sign that reads "Pnnt Hall" when she exits the airport, smiling at his little sister.

"You look like you had a good flight." he says.

"Rex!"

The growling abruptly stopped as she spotted the "Pnnt Hall" sign and she ran up to him, dropping her bags to the ground to jump up and tackle-hug him. Emphasis on tackle.

"Ugh. Dad made me fly coach. And I had to get up at a stupid hour of the morning to get on the damn plane and then the guy beside me had gas. I wanted to mace him. But noooo, I had to check my mace.

"You remembered I was flying in. I'm impressed."

"Let me guess: You thought I was lying in a gutter somewhere, too drunk to remember? Your faith in me moves mountains, kiddo." Rex says, hugging her back.

"Hey, it could be worse. He could have made you fly under your own power." Rex reminds her, picking up her bag.

"I'm surprised they let you through Customs with that thing. But it's okay. The car is outside. Let's go." he says.

"You drink alot and you have forgotten you were supposed to pick me up before but I was more thinking you just got your days messed up or something. You can't be awesomely thrilled about me moving in."

She picks up her mace and follows along.

"Dad declared it an archeological item destined for the museum. Got a nifty provenance for it and everything. There's always a way around Customs. Dad used to be Hawkman and all. He's pretty clever. Hey, did I tell you want I'm planning to do for him for Old Man's Day this year?"

"Hey, it's not that I'm not thrilled, but he sort of sprung on me at the last minute, Pnnt. He could have talked to me about it first instead of just declaring it was going to happen." Rex tells her.

"And chill on the Hawk talk in public. Half this city is still on my ass over some crazy stuff that's been happening lately." he says, putting her bag in the trunk, then opening her door. He gets in shortly after.

"Okay, what's the plan?" he asks.

"Yeah, the suddenly springing me on you is probably my fault. I got busted flirting with a local guy and Dad was Not Happy. If Mom hadn't chilled him out I think he was gonna send me to reform school. Sorry but hey! You get ME! You know you like it."

She grinned and sat in the car, messing with the air vents while she waited for him.

"Crazy stuff? Well, I can help." She grins widely and looks pretty proud of herself. "I'm gonna take up the Hawkgirl mantle and join the JSA."

"You...want to join the Justice Society?" he asks, a little worried.

Nicolette, to his recollection, doesn't take orders well, and isn't know for playing well with others.

"That IS great, Pnnt...but you don't exactly do well with authority that isn't Carter's." he says.

She totally wasn't expecting that. She'd been expecting him to freak out and say no, fight with her over it, and be generally displeased even after she told him Mom had said okay. But he was...being cool. Huh.

"Yeah well...I'll figure it out or something." Or mace anyone who gets in her way. "I'm joining the JSA. I'm gonna be Hawkgirl. I know, it's Mom's mantle, but I'm totally going with a more badass uniform like Dad's. Think he'll be happy?"

"Somehow, I think Carter wanted you not to join the family business, but he'll still be happy. He's happy with anything you do, Nic." Rex says.

Rex was freaking out, on the inside, but if he fought with her on it, it would make her want to do it that much more. Nicolette was nearly as stubborn as he was, if not more and she'd take a contrary position just to irk him.

"So, besides kissing strange boys in Egypt, how was the dig?" he asks.

"He wasn't happy with me making out with Egyptian boys."

She rolled her eyes at that. It wasn't like she was going to DO anything. Geez.

"The dig was pretty cool. They're finding all sorts of artifacts from Khufu's reign. Mom and Dad have spent a bunch of time at the site and I think they'll have a whole lot of stuff to send home. Mom seemed pretty happy, Rex. She was smiling a lot. Dad seemed happy, too. Busy, but happy. They're kinda cute when they're happy."

She played with her seatbelt a little bit.

"How're you doing, Rex? I felt weird leaving with Mom and Dad and leaving you here all alone. I'm glad I'm back. Now I can make sure if you're going to drink yourself stupid you will at least drink decent stuff."

She already had plans on making sure he bought better stuff. No way was she stealing crappy beer.

"Ha. Ha. And Ha again. No beer for you kid. Carter and Mom will kill me." he says.

She says that Mom looks happy and a sad smile crosses his his lips. Rex was happy for her, for both them, he really was...but something about that still hurt a lot.

Nic was going to get to do something nice for her father on Father's Day. Some people weren't so lucky.

"And I'm fine, really. There was a situation while you were gone, but it seems Carter didn't hear about it, otherwise he'd have been on my ass. I got it fixed, though." he says.

"Oh come on! It's not like I'd have more than one and not like I'd leave the apartment. I'd sit my happy ass right down on the couch, watch some bad tv, and drink. It'd be fine. Mom and Dad would never know and hey, if they ever found out you could tell them you were trying to teach me a lesson or something. Dad'd totally buy it."

She does, however, look concerned when he mentions a situation.

"What happened, Rex?"

Her first thought was that he'd done something stupid because while her brother didn't like to talk about his issues, she knew what they were. Sometimes, she felt guilty for even existing, knowing the situation about his own father's disappearance.

"No beer, kid. Besides, you have school. We'll revisit this topic when school's out." he says.

He drives on for a minute, before answering her question.

"Someone managed to make the gargoyles at the St. Roch Cathedral come to live and they started killing people. People assumed because that they had wings, and I have wings...yeah.

So, the torch-and-pitchfork brigade wanted me like Mick Jagger wanted leather pants in the 60's. With some help, I found out it was woman whose husband and daughter were killed by the Rollin' 60's street gang. Cops didn't find who did it, but me and...a friend did.

So we brought 'em to justice. People still think I'm a menace, though." Rex says.

"Shit, Rex. This isn't good at all."

She noted the "friend".

"Fuck. How can I help you fix up your image?"
