We had been married for just over a year, and bought it for £900 – our first step on the housing ladder as you’d call it. Norma and I had met in 1961. The Watersons had a folk club in a pub in Hull, and I went up there to perform. It was love at first sight, but Norma was married and I wasn’t. The second time we met, in 1963, I was married and she wasn’t; then she went away to the West Indies and when she came back neither of us was married so we finally got together.
