1. Things finally came to a head when she asked if he would wish another geisha to help see to his needs, and he told her she was the only one he ever wanted... and she realized he meant it, even as formally as it was stated.
2. Each realizing the other was in love with them made things more awkward and confusing, much as she was ever awkward, for weeks.
3. They discussed the idea of marriage for a time, and he realized that he could not marry her without taking away much of who she was after so much time as the super-geisha.
4. Falling back on tradition, she arranged a suitable marriage for him in terms of politics, station and ability to maintain a household, with no love expected in the marriage beyond the necessity of producing at least one child.
5. Everyone else on the team is still scratching their heads over #4, but Kikuya and Hajime remain very much in love, very formal about it, and entirely content with the situation, and continue to be co-workers as well as lovers.
