On the Subject of Dad...
Alex checked around the house for the fourth time in ten minutes. Dad was gone and he'd taken Fish-Face (codename: Mera) with him. They were probably going to visit Grandma Two and Grandpa Two down in Poseidonis for the weekend. Donna was waiting in the living room for the coast to be clear while Mom made lunch. She liked having them over more and more these days, despite the fact that she controlled all topics of conversation while they were there.

And she never told them the things they wanted to know.

Deciding that the coast was as clear as it was going to get, Alex signals to his twin sister to join him in the kitchen to begin the assault.

"Hey, Mom. Donna and I need to talk to you." he says simply.

"About Dad." he clarifies.

Alex waited, staring at his mother.

And he waited.

When it seemed that she really wasn't going to speak, that she was just going to stand there and deny them /again/, Alex just shook his head.

"You always stress how important honesty with your family is. You always tell us to trust our family, if no one else. Now, here Donna and I are, trusting you to be honest with us and you're not doing it for God-Only-Knows what reason.

Never again, Mom. I'm not trusting you again, Mom." Alex says, heading for the door.

Donna sighed. She knew that this was going to blow up in their faces. She turned with Alex, heading for the door with him.

Lian sighed.

"Wait," she said.

"Maybe...it is time that I told you a little bit more. About your father."

Alex stops, considering whether or not this was just another ploy for time. He wanted to believe that his mom would be honest with them, but she hadn't before. Why start now?

He turns around, looking at her.

"Okay. I think we're listening." he says quietly.

"I'm listening," Donna said, stopping in her tracks.

"All right. How did you guys meet? Were you ever married? Why did you break up? Did Damien know about us? Why didn't he stay?" Alex asks.

Then he decides that letting his mother speak would probably help in getting those answers, so he quiets. Donna might have questions, too.

"You can answer those in any order you want." he says, sheepishly.

Lian inhaled. Damn, this was going to be tough.

"We met when I was undercover in the League of Assassins, looking for your grandmother," Lian. "I caught his eye. As he didn't know about me, I tried to stay far under his radar as possible. But it wasn't meant to be."

A pause.

"We fell in love. I wasn't supposed to, but I did. I got pregnant.

It wasn't the same way that your father and I got married, but yes, we were. I didn't even know he had married until after the fact.

The reason we separated was simple- Uncle Tim found me out on a mission, and I told him I was pregnant. We decided that it was likely for the best that I didn't go back to him and the League.

He knows about you. Both of you. He wanted to stay. And at the time...I wanted him to, too. But circumstances being the way they were, our lives were just too different to make it work.

He loved you both. Very much. I'm sure he probably still does."

Alex listens to his mother, trying to understand her thought processes at the time. Uncle Tim was always very silent on the subject of Damien, but now more of the picture was becoming clear.

"So, you just left him?" Alex asks. It probably comes out more accusatory than he intends for.

"You said he's a member of the League of Assassins, right? You got out. Why didn't he?" Alex asks.

"I didn't want that life for you," Lian said. "If you'd been raised in the League, you would have been made to compete with each other. Maybe not by your father or I, but your grandmother and aunt would have certainly encouraged it.

He's the Demon's Head. It's not as easy for him as it was for me. And even for me, it wasn't easy."

Alex considers this and wonders how life would have turned out if Damien had been there for them instead of Dad.

"Grandma Talia has come by in the past and everyone gets this look on their face like they're waiting for something to happen. Why is that?" he asks.

Donna couldn't begin to imagine what life without Dad and Mera would be like.

But the thought was still there.

Lian sighed.

"Because your grandmother can't seem to get past the fact that I've married someone else and moved on.

The way she sees it, your father and I are having a long-standing affair."

Donna remembered that Damien had shown up a couple of times when they were younger. It always led to lots of yelling from both of their parents.

Alex wasn't sure he believed his mother, but then he didn't want to push it. This was the most information she'd ever given them about their father and he was grateful for it.

"Maybe Aunt Rose will know. If not, like I said, I've got a name of someone we can track down." Alex says.
