The Application: Character Information.
Character Name: John Stewart.
Superhero Name: Green Lantern.
Place of Origin: The hood, aka Detroit, bitches. He grew up in a dingy apartment right next to the MARKET, across from the hoppin' BARBER SHOP, and down the corner from the classy, classy PORN STORE.
Current Location: John currently lives in a dingy apartment (Note: not the same one as before! This one is marginally less dingy. GL: Movin' On Up!) in his old neighborhood that he rents from a kindly, if slightly senile, old woman.
PB: D.B. Woodside.
Abilities:
John's abilities stem from his Green Lantern ring, gifted to him by the Guardians: it's not just there for ornamentation, yo! In fact, this nifty little piece of jewelry allows GL to perform various feats that he would otherwise be unable to do. These abilities he is gifted when donning the ring include:
• Flight: Green Lantern is not only able to fly himself, but is also able to envelope others in his force field and lift them along with him into the sky.
• Force Shields: John is able to create shields that are limited only by his imagination; the green light emitted by his ring can take any shape he desires, and will protect him and those in his vicinity from various types of blasts and weapons.
•Force Blasts: Similar to the shield the ring produces, the green light can also be used to physically injure the Green Lantern's enemies by taking any shape he desires, although John most often takes the most straightforward path when it comes to producing said 'shape'.
• Combat: Although John may be an ordinary human without his ring, his years of military experience have made him a formidable opponent in hand-to-hand combat. He's a talented fighter, and can hold his own against supervillains even when his ring is temporarily void of its powers.
Strengths and Weaknesses:
• As a former Marine, John has a great deal of experience with tactical planning, hands-on combat, and the heading of operations. This makes John an excellent leader in field missions, since he is both good at giving directions and taking them in tense situations. An incredibly organized man, also a direct result of his years in the marines, John often encourages the fostering of unity and teamwork within the League. He's not the type to rush into things without thinking; he much prefers to plan ahead before following through with any decisions he may make. After all, there are often lives at stake depending entirely on his choices.
• While his Green Lantern ring gifts John with nearly unlimited power, its energy source can be depleted if used too often in a short period of time. When this happens, John is left as vulnerable as any ordinary human (although one who is, admittedly, packing some serious muscle). Additionally, John's tendency to take charge of missions has sometimes caused conflicts with his fellow Justice League members; due to his headstrong personality, when his opinions regarding combat and fieldwork clash with those he works with, he often doesn't have many qualms with voicing them anyway.
Personality:
Gruff, tough, and the embodiment of sheer masculinity, John Stewart is a force to be reckoned with. He's a man who knows what he wants, and is never afraid of going after it - why should he be? He's got guns, and no, not the metal kind (but trust him, his are just as deadly, especially to the female population in particular). A military man at heart, John may be a stickler for the rules - he lives by them, in fact; the code is his life: everything is about teamwork, organization, and thinking before you act - but at the same time, he certainly isn't the type to ever take shit from anyone; put another way, he Does Not Negotiate With Terrorists.
Truly a product of his military training, John is practically unrecognizable from the somewhat angry, explosive teenager he had once been. A practical, pragmatic soul, he always looks before he leaps, and although his take-charge personality may oft cause him to conflict with his coworkers' equally strong personalities, he isn't the sort to ever back down from his opinions. John is logical, and once his opinion is made, it is difficult for anyone to change it, for a great deal of thought has undoubtedly gone into his decisions already.
Nevertheless, under that tough exterior, John is unarguably a caring soul; it is this fact, perhaps, which attracts women to his personality. A strong, resilient man who will unerringly stand up for his beliefs and take responsibility for his actions, even when doing so may cause his death, John's upstanding sense of morals is what led to his appointment as a Green Lantern. These, along with his ever-present courage and tactical intelligence, are the traits that serve to make John the exalted superhero he has become, as well as the valued member of the Justice League that he has always been.
Relationships:
Batman: When John needs a man to vent to about his relationship problems (and trust him, he has a lot), Batman is the one he turns to. The two may not be the best of friends, but they're both real men - or so they say - and it is this fact, perhaps, that unites them. If asked about their relationship, GL would simply say, "Oh, that Batman. Great guy. Needs to get it together for the ladies, though, if you ask me." But the truth is, after a hard day's work, Batman is John's go-to guy if he needs company when he wants to pop open a beer, prop up his legs on the sofa, and watch the game. Oh, but one thing - he'll be fetching his own Doritos, Bruce. He didn't need an Alfred growing up, and he sure as hell doesn't need one as a grown man.
Flash: Sometimes, all GL wants to do is give Wally a good thump across the head and ask, "What the HELL do you think you're doing, kid?" - but when it comes right to the heart of things, the Flash is John's closest friend in the League. They may very well be opposites in terms of personality and demeanor (and hey, age, too), but there's just something there that clicks. GL's a down-to-earth, straight-forward type of guy, but that isn't to say that he doesn't like to have fun once in a while - and when he's in the mood for just that, Wally's the superhero he turns to. Although it takes a good, long while to gain John Stewart's trust, Wally's one of the rare few who's been able to do so, and been able to do so to the fullest possible extent - hey, want proof? Just ask him all about John Stewart's wild childhood. He knows ALL the gory, embarrassing details, including that great nickname GL had before he joined the corps...although good luck finding out that particular tidbit. He's been sworn to secrecy, all right? There's something in the Man Law about breaking that sort of thing.
Hawkman: Although John's grown to regard Hawkman with a certain amount of grudging respect, there's no denying that he still distrusts the other superhero, if only because of the minute threat he poses to the...well, non-existent relationship John currently shares with one Shayera Hol. I mean, the man was a stalker, plain and simple. Yeah, he may be a superhero dedicated to the good cause now, but John isn't all that certain that ancient history crap is necessarily something to be believed - he isn't about to let fate dictate his life, and that includes befriending Hawkman simply because they were once supposedly best friends in a past life several centuries ago.
J'onn: Although J'onn and John may indeed share the same name (or at least a variance of it), they are far from the closest two members of the League. However, as members of the original seven, they have established an incredibly successful professional relationship, and are thus able to work in a manner that befits a crimefighting league. Due to the fact that John has spent many a year interacting with alien species during his time as a Green Lantern, he is able to understand J'onn's culture perhaps a bit more easily than some of the other League members who are more humanized; it is this, as well as both their abilities to think before leaping, that has allowed them to maintain the bond they have.
Rex Mason: An old friend from the military corps, Rex Mason is a man with whom John Stewart shares a great deal of history. Before Rex' mutation, John often considered him as the man with the life he could have had had he not accepted the Guardians' offer, a decision which he often contemplates the wiseness of, and even after the other man's transformation, the two still maintain a very close relationship. John admires Rex' integrity and couragesness, and after many years of having fought with him during his time in the marines, the two have formed a closeness that can't easily be broken.
Shayera: One could potentially write a novel regarding the convoluted relationship between Shayera Hol and John Stewart - the two seem to be chronically starcrossed, due to everything from former lovers, present lovers, and at the heart of it all, their own stubbornness. Although it is clear that John has feelings for Shayera (for more information re: this, just ask Bruce Wayne, with whom he has had many, many mantalks re: this situation), it is the simple fact that he refuses to let fate dictate his life that is preventing him from actively seeking out a relationship with Hawkgirl. However, his feelings are very obvious in nearly every action he makes and every word he says; John isn't the sort of guy who can ever beat around the bush or play successful mind games, and thus hasn't exactly been able to keep his feelings under wraps.
Nevertheless, although the two are destined to have a child together in the future, John continues to keep his distance from Shayera, often shutting himself off if he feels the two of them are getting too close.
Superman: Although Superman and Green Lantern aren't the tightest of the original seven, they're definitely far from conflictory; John most certainly admires Superman's upstanding attitude and high moral sense of responsibility (and all those other great traits that make him the popular superhero that he is). The two share a successful professional relationship, and although GL's occasional attempts at taking charge of missions can occasionally create conflict, all in all, the two are more than cool with each other. John has always felt indebted towards Superman for helping to clear his name when even he himself was certain that he had done wrong, and this gratitude has helped to create a bond between the superheroes that is perhaps not present in the relationships that John shares with most members of the League.
Vixen: Many often question why it is, exactly, that John Stewart and Mari Mccabe are still dating - sure, there's the fact that they make a downright attractive couple, and yes, they seem to be happy but really, at the same time, it's plainly obvious that John just doesn't seem to be very...interested. It's not that he isn't a good boyfriend, because he is: he's devoted enough, nice enough, but it's the simple fact that Shayera Hol is around that seems to be preventing Mari and John from ever truly moving forward with their relationship; in fact, the two seem to be moving backward with every day, but John's a stubborn man and again, it's that whole fate thing: there's no way a small thing like destiny's going to control which woman HE ends up with. He likes Mari, and the two of them get along well, and he certainly cares about her, and although there may not be a great deal of chemistry in their relationship, he isn't about to end things any time soon.
Wonder Woman: As a member of the original seven, there's no denying that John has been fighting alongside Wonder Woman for a long, long time, and thus, he has certainly grown to admire her skill and poise as a superhero - it would be hard not to, really, considering how much of both Diana has. However, that isn't to say that John and Diana have the smoothest of relationships; yes, she may indeed be his man's woman (unofficially, of course, although he'd like to put in his vote for Bruce and Diana just getting their shit together already), but there's something to be said for a lady who can dress classy - is there really a NEED for the high boots and that costume, or lack thereof?
Pre-League History:
Born and raised in a rather downtrodden section of Detroit, John Stewart as an adolescent was practically unrecognizable from the pragmatic man he is today. A young boy prone to acting out and embracing his short temper, John's transformation came when he enlisted in the military corps at the age of seventeen. He stayed with the corps for the good part of the decade, and it was then that John matured greatly, becoming the logical and brave hero he is today. It was also during this period of time that he met Rex Mason, a military friend who would grow to be a fellow superhero.
Soon after John left the corps, he was selected by the Guardians to be a Green Lantern due to his strength of character and honorable personality. He left Earth to train under Katma Tui, a woman with whom he felt an instant attraction, and with whom he had a short-lived affair that lasted only as long as his training.
Since John's home sector 2814 was under the supervision of the Green Lantern Kyle Rayner at this time, he was appointed the task of residing over another part of the universe for nearly a decade. Upon his return to Earth, he fought with six other superheros in an event known as the Imperium invasion, at the conclusion of which he agreed to join the fledgling Justice League.
League History:
As a founding member of the Justice League, John's history with the team is a long and convoluted one; he has been with the League since its initial formation, when Superman called upon the original seven superheroes to form a crimefighting union after the events of the Imperium invasion. Although John has had several notable appearances throughout the history of the series, his earliest one occurred when the Manhunters framed him for the destruction of a planet, as they had ulterior motives to incite strife within the Green Lantern corps, and thereby exact revenge upon the Guardians who had created them.
John, who withstood the trials put upon him in a manner befitting his title of Green Lantern, was aided by his fellow Justice Leaguers to not only clear his name, but also save the Guardians from imminent destruction. In particular, the Flash, Wally West, stood by him even when John was adamant in his own guilt, a fact that truly served to solidify their friendship.
Over time, although John was on fairly good terms with all six of his fellow teammates, he became particularly close with Hawkgirl, with whom he finally embarked on a relationship. However, before the two could truly start something meaningful, the people of Shayera's homeland, the Thanagarians, invaded Earth under the guise of peace, and Shayera was revealed to have been a spy. Although her status as a traitor became rather ambiguous as the events progressed, Shayera renounced her title of Hawkgirl and her place in the Justice League after the Thanagarians were defeated, leaving John both bewildered and heartbroken.
However, being a resilient man, John eventually moved on; the Justice League was expanding, and the constant stream of new recruits yielded an intriguing new love interest in John's life: Mari Mccabe or, as her superhero alterego was termed, Vixen. Although the two were happy enough superficially, things became infinitely more complicated upon Shayera Hol's return during a particularly difficult encounter with an inexplicably revived Solomon Grundy. After all, John had never altogether resolved his feelings regarding Shayera, and her reappearance only accentuated this fact.
Although he remained with Mari, an involuntary mission that sent John to the future only served to double his doubts; it was here in the 31st century that John met his son, Warhawk, born to him by Shayera Hol. Despite discovering this fact, John traveled back to the 20th century resolute not to let fate guide his life, continuing his relationship with Mari despite his obvious feelings for Shayera.
The events of Project Cadmus obviously affected John in a drastic manner; as one of the original seven members of the League, and as a man with an acute sense of responsibility, John readily turned himself over to the government when the idea was suggested. He subsequently fought against the fused Luthor-Braniac with the rest of the original seven.
Post-Destroyer History:
Since the events of Destroyer, John has been doing much of the same; as a founding member of the Justice League, he tends to his regular duties in a timely and efficient manner, but has found that the decrease in crime has left him with a lot more time than he knows what do with. Of course, all those extra hours mean extra time with his current boo, Mari, which is great, right? Right. Except that it also means running into Shayera a heck of a lot less, since missions seem a lot more sparse these days, and you know, while that doesn't bother John in the least - well, anyway, he has a lot more time on his hands.
Plot Ideas: He's in da club gettin' tipseh. Duh.

Journal Sample:
January 1st, and it seems I've gone and made a fool out of myself already - funny thing is, I can't even remember doing it. Now, I'm the first to admit when I've done something stupid; hell, I'm the first to point out when the rest of you are doing something stupid (yeah, Wally, I'm looking at you). But throwing someone into the New Year's Eve Ball just because he "looked suspicious?" Now hey, that just sounds suspicious.
Heck of a way to start the New Year.
