I hate to ask this, but can I borrow someone's notes from today's classes? No matter how many times I tell her that I'm well enough to go to class, Madam Pomfrey insists that I am to stay here for another day or so. This couldn't have happened at a better time, could it? Also, if anyone has the tissues that don't rub your nose raw, might I have a few dozen of those too?

Gelsey? Whenever she lets people down here, I think that I need to talk to you about something.

Amazing match, Ravenclaw! I don't think I sat down once during it and I know I've lost my voice because of it, but it was definitely worth it. Hopefully everyone that got hurt is feeling better though. There were some nasty spills, weren't there? But still, it really was a great match and a nice way to spend the day.

As much as I like being back, I'm already sick for home. Not that I don't love it here, don't get me wrong, I think I just prefer the quiet of being at home as opposed to corridors crowded with people everywhere. But at least we did get back safely and I brought my new cat who I have still yet to name! Currently, she's just being called "kitty" because I can't think of anything more original or suitable. She would have been called snowball if she had been white, but I didn't luck out in that department. Maybe there are naming books in the Library for animals - or is that just bordering on ridiculousness and desperation?

Classes start tomorrow and I'm going to miss sleeping in for several days in a row. This is un-Ravenclaw of me, but can't classes begin on Tuesday instead of a Monday?

Just as I had said, I did get a cat for Christmas. Only it's not so much a cat as a kitten. She unbelievably small, fits right in the palm of my hands and is the sweetest thing in the world. She is absolutely curious about anything and everything, and makes quite the mess when she's exploring, but it's nothing I can't forgive her for. I don't have a name for her yet, nothing seems to fit right yet, but hopefully one will come to me soon.

I managed to take a picture of her earlier and just finished developing it. I think I'll paste it - she should be a little bit bigger by the time I bring her back to Hogwarts, but she'll stay small for a bit so please be careful if you see her!

I hope everyone else had a happy Christmas and got everything they wanted and then some!

Sometimes I forget how much I miss being home and how quiet it is here. Well, quiet is relative when I go into town with all the tourists flocking here for a few days before heading across the channel, but I've gotten as used to it as I can over the years. It was almost clear enough to see France today - I tried to take pictures though, unfortunately, I couldn't zoom in close enough to get a clear shot. Perhaps another day when there's less clouds and less wind. I also need to remember to bring gloves; it's not too terribly cold (not like at Hogwarts, anyway), but the wind is what really does it.

Dad doesn't know I found out, but apparently he's getting me a cat for Christmas, one that I can take back to school with me.

I'm really excited for the match this weekend. Good luck to everyone playing in it, especially Ravenclaw! Hopefully it'll be an exciting match to watch, though I hope no one gets hurt during it. The weather will likely be good though cold as it always is during this time of year.

Why can't it be spring yet? I'm so ready for all the snow and cold weather to go away and for it to finally start getting warm enough to not have to wear layers and layers of clothes all the time. Don't get me wrong, I do like snow, but we've had more than enough of it this winter!

Is it bad that I'm not the least bit excited about this ball? I mean, it does have the possibility of being a little fun, but getting dressed up and having to wear a mask all evening just doesn't sound all that appealing. At least I've already gotten my costume, so I don't have to worry about that anymore. I am, however, looking forward to the food - the house-elves always outdo themselves on holidays and make some of the best stuff.

Do you think the teachers would even let me bring my camera in just to amuse myself for half the evening?

Cut for two pictures )

I enjoyed having an extra day off classes this week. I got my homework done early and can now just enjoy the weekend instead of worrying about it later. They should give us days off more often for that reason; we'd all be much more happier, I think.

There's going to be a Halloween Ball? Oh dear Do we have to attend or is optional to skip it and stay in our common room? I just don't know if I like the idea of having to find a costume and then be masked at it - I won't be able to recognise anyone. I'd much rather the school do the regular feast with those decorations instead. Not that I'm going against what the teachers have decided, it's just a matter of preference.

Oh, bless this rain. I had every intention of going outside today and photographing since I finished all my homework early, but that doesn't seem possible with all this rain. It's been going on practically all day and should've stopped by this point, but there's still no end in sight. I could risk it though - put a charm on my camera and go frolicking about in the rain as some people are already doing. It's not that I mind getting wet, I just don't want to mess up my new camera. Then again, there's always one of the older ones that could be used instead to avoid getting permanently damaged.

It's definitely worth the possibility, but do I really want to risk it? I think I'll just flip for it. Heads - I'll go out and risk it. Tails - I'll stay inside and wait for it all to pass.

Heads it is then. Good thing too, it's getting stuffy inside and I could use the fresh air. Besides, it'll give me the opportunity to wear the new rain boots my dad got me last year that I haven't used yet.

I would go on about how much I enjoyed myself at Hogsmeade, but the general consensus is that most everyone is sick and tired of hearing about it and would rather not listen to anymore tellings of it. I suppose I could consent to that given I didn't really do very much - just wandered around, bought a bit of candy, and a new quill. Other than that, it was uneventful.

There was an owl today from my dad. Apparently my aunt, who isn't exactly the best person in the world, is coming to visit him. She said that he needs some proper female company and for the house to have her kind of influence on it. Meaning, when I go home for Christmas, I expect everything will be much different than when I left it a few weeks ago. She nags him so much and I know he's going to try and work as late as he possibly can at the Ministry to avoid her oppressive company. Hopefully, for his sake, she doesn't stay very long.

Character's Full Name: Orlanda "Orla" Lynn Quirke
Birthday and Age: 17 March 1981; 16 years old
Year: Sixth Year Ravenclaw
PB: Amelia Warner or Laura Donnelly
Sexuality: Sraight; heterosexual

Personality:
Orla is a very shy and reserved person, oftentimes proving to be more quiet than talkative, especially in situations where she is uncomfortable or unfamiliar with. She’s easily pleased and doesn’t ask for a lot, even if her father does tend to spoil her on occasion. She dotes on her father, writes him often, and the two of them are inseparable when she's home.

She believes herself to be independent, but if she were ever left on her own, she’d realise just how much she holds onto those people whom she believes will protect her and watch over her. This sort of behaviour is what makes her appear meek and hesitant around people she doesn't know and situations she is unfamiliar with.

Orla is also exceedingly smart, but incredibly naïve, so most intellect is shadowed by how unaware she seems of the world outside around her. Call it selfishness, but it’s really because her father has protected her innocence so much and has kept her rose-coloured glasses on for longer than most others. She was aware that there was a war going on, but often pretended that it wouldn't affect her; that if she stayed home or at Hogwarts, nothing terribly bad would happen to her or those around her.

Despite her reservations and her quiet personality, she can be outgoing around those she knows well enough. Those who get to see this side of her are few, but she does smile a lot and laughs easily. Typically, she has a camera somewhere on her person or in her bag. When she was younger, her father said that she needed a hobby and, after much consideration, she decided she wanted to try photography. Her prints weren't very good in the beginning, but with diligent practice and the use of various different cameras and techniques, she's slowly started to hone her craft to where she's pleased with the photographs she takes.

Brief History:
Orla was born in the early morning hours of 17 March 1983, to two very proud parents. Her mother had always been told that, due to a small heart condition, she may not be able to have children. However, much to their surprise, little Orlanda was born and the two cherished her more than anything in the world. The birth weakened her mother’s condition considerable, but as far as Orla remembers, she had never seen her mother with nothing but a smile on her face. Her father doted on his daughter, oftentimes spoiling her – much to her mother’s dismay, but even her mother would buy her trinkets when the two of them would go into town.

At age five, Orla entered Primary school and began a muggle education. At the time, she only believed that magic existed in fairy tales as her parents didn’t want to get her hopes up of becoming a witch in case she didn’t. However, at age six, a pesky little boy and teased her about her pig-tails and she got so angry that, somehow, she caused pig-tails to sprout out the side of his head! Orla had expected her parents to be cross with her, but when she arrived home that evening, they were rejoiced with the news and told her all about magic and Hogwarts; her father even demonstrating a few tricks to her!

At age seven, Orla’s mother died. She was too young to understand what it mean, but knew that she missed her mother terribly. With her mother no longer around, it was only her and her father, and he worked a steady job at the Ministry, so she would be left in after-school programmes or at a child-care center until he came and collected her. The death of her mother caused her to become a more quiet child. In school, she excelled above the majority of her classmates and was a favourite amongst her teachers. She had friends, but only a close knit of them. This continued until she turned eleven.

On her eleventh birthday, Orla knew that she was to expect a letter from Hogwarts and wasn’t disappointed. There it had came, by owl, addressed solely to her. It was her Hogwarts letter and both her and her father celebrated with cake and ice cream that night.

At Hogwarts, Orla was sorted into Ravenclaw house. Her father had predicted that she would have been and couldn’t have been more proud. She liked it there, the colours suited her and the atmosphere was calm and collected. She was excited to begin learning about magic and devoted herself to it, as all Ravenclaws were stereotyped into being ‘smart.’ She wasn’t the top of her class, but she was in the higher percentages. She had a small group of friends that she associated with and went down to the lake to study with, but she wasn’t a social butterfly like many.

Orla was only a year behind Harry Potter, but knew about him. She respected him and all he had to deal with. While they weren’t friends, anytime she’d pass him in the corridors, she would smile or say hello to him. Despite being relatively shy and quiet, Orla did manage to make a few good friends while at Hogwarts, but she still mostly kept to herself and the dark room she has fashioned in a spare closet at Hogwarts.

She also wasn’t naïve to the war around her. It scared her. To think that there were people dying nearly every day and it wouldn’t stop was unfathomable and she had trouble comprehending it. While she supported Harry’s side, she didn’t exactly join up in the fight - nor did her father for that matter. For one, she was still too young, and for another, she didn’t possess the Gryffindor courage to point her wand and potentially harm another human being. But the war finally ended, much to her own relief and she feels that things are a lot safer now; she can do whatever she'd like and there wouldn't be those who'd scorn her because of her birth.
