[Fic]: Midnight Washing Title: Midnight Washing Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender Characters: Katara, Haru Rating: PG/K+ Summary: At the Western Air Temple, Katara wakes up to see Haru sneaking away from the group. Curious, she follows.
As the moon grew fuller, Katara became more and more aware of the water in the bodies around her. It was getting to the point where it was hard to sleep at night, with people getting up and wandering off to find a convenient bush.
But with Sokka and Zuko off on their fishing trip (what in the world had possessed Sokka to trust the Fire bastard?), she tried to pay closer attention to what was happening.
Which was why she noticed Haru sneaking off.
She watched him go, then tried to go back to sleep.
She didn't feel him come back.
Katara frowned. That wasn't like Haru -- and Teo was still there, so the younger boy hadn't talked him into some kind of midnight rendezvous, at least. Worried, she carefully snuck away from the group. If he'd got into some kind of trouble...
Water bubbled over in the back of her mind; Haru was by the fountain they used to wash their clothes. What in the world...?
"Haru?" she said.
The earthbender jerked and nearly fell in; the cloth he'd been scrubbing fell from his hand.
"What are you doing?" she asked.
Haru snatched up the cloth before she could get closer. "K-Katara!" he said, green eyes wide. "I thought you were asleep!"
"I was," she admitted. "I..." can sense people's blood was not a good thing to say to someone she liked. It was creepy. "I, uh, wasn't sleeping well."
"Oh." Was he hiding the cloth?
"Why are you doing laundry so late?" she asked.
It was hard to tell, as they were sitting so close to the fountain, but Katara could have sworn his heart sped up.
Damn Hama, anyway.
"Habit," he said after a moment. "When Dad and I started going around to the other villages, it was a lot safer to wash stuff at night."
She nodded. That did make sense. But not why he was hiding it from her.
Something flickered across his face, and Haru flinched.
"Are you all right?" Katara asked, worried.
"I'm fine," he said, standing up. "I just gotta--"
There was cloth in his hand, stained red.
"You're hurt!" she exclaimed, reaching for his hand.
"No! No I'm not!" Haru stepped away from her, putting the hand with the cloth behind his back again.
"But you--" she began, then paused.
Bloody cloth.
Occupied village.
Pretty face.
Katara's eyes went wide.
"Haru..."
...no, that was ridiculous. He had a moustache. A beard. And looked quite handsome in them, too.
"Never mind," she said, letting him go.
He sketched her a quick bow, and fled.
Katara watched him go.
