Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
His day of patrols ended, Sigurdur entered the hall to eat. The days patrols were uneventful, for which he was somewhat glad. Still, he remembered the stories told by his father's companions and wondered often what life on Midgard was like. How did the humans live knowing so little about the world around them?

He was not a philosopher, but he often thought upon such things when he had the time.

Filling a plate, he found a table and sat down, eating silently as he thought more on what Midgard must be like.

Douglas was starving. If he did not get meat now, he'd be nothing but fur and bones, he just knew it. But he managed to keep himself together as he walked into the hall alongside a particular fair maiden. He beamed as he caught a particular scent.

"What ist that look on thine face for?" Hjordis asked. Douglas made faces when he sensed something and it usually meant trouble. "Art we having goat again? I doth not like goat."

Sigurdur is lost deep in thought, eating and drinking his mead. The goat was good tonight. He loved goat. In truth, he loved just about any meat put before him, but the goat was especially good tonight, as was the bread.

He thought he heard a voice he recognized, but did not immediately look up. He was still considering Midgard.

"Nay, fair Hjordis, they hath sheep, too," Douglas assures offhand. "But good Sigurdur ist here!" He grins and approaches. "Hail!"

Hjordis smiled when she saw Sigurdur. "Hail and well met, Sigurdur Hogunson. How fares thee?"

Sigurdur's reverie is broken as he hears the voices of his friends, finds Douglas and Hjordis speaking to him. He smiles and beckons them, making haste to stand.

"Mine friends! Please, join me. I art well. My patrols for the day are completed and I wast simply enjoying dinner." he says, looking between them.

"I wast just thinking about what life upon Midgard must be like. I know several who have been, but the accounts vary with each telling. What hast thou heard?" he asks.

Douglas smiles this is so his turf. "Ah, well, Midgard ist a varied place, indeed. Mine own Granny, of course, hath been its Greatest Physician for scores of years. She can do without benefit of sorcery, with no education in the physik of thy father, healings of diseases that baffle the imagination!"

"Aye, it ist a most wonderful place. The next time we go, if there ist time Ellie didst promise to take me to see a band called Starry Twilight. Ellie doth assure me they art most wonderful."

"She battles diseases with no magic? Interesting. I art not trained in the healer's art, but I respect those that are. I wonder if Midgard sicknesses are comparable to any we hath seen?" Sigurdur questions.

Hjordis words catch him a bit off-guard, however.

"Starry...Twilight?" Sigurdur asks, one eyebrow raised suspiciously. "What battles hast this band fought in?"

"Many of them are utterly unlike any of Asgard," Douglas assures him, but then...

"They art a band of musicians, good Sigurudur. And no match for the skalds of Asgard or e'en of Scotland. With all respect to the fair Eleanor, who is valiant and of good family, they are, as many friends of Mummy's might express, lousy." He looks to Sigurdur. "This ist not because they art in truth infected with insects, but used to show that they hath the same worth as those that careth for themselves so little." Pause. "Also, the name ist not literal either. Twilight on Midgard ist not particularly Starry."

"Humans art strange creatures, indeed." Sigurdur says, pondering their words.

"What of the food of Midgard? How doth it compare to Asgard?" he asks.

"It's good and a wide variety of different kinds," Hjordis said. "I art most fond of ice cream and pizza." A pause. "And chocolate. Lady Sif wast most correct when she said chocolate is truly amazing."

"Fare thee well, Hjordis Volstagsdottir, and thee, Douglas Hrimharisson." Sigurdur says, returning to his meal.

Yes, he was looking forward to seeing Midgard.
