“Shit, it’s midnight!”

Delilah jumped up from the couch, breaking away from the kiss she had just been thoroughly invested in. Matt stayed splayed across the couch, lips still puckered as if she’d disappeared into a puff of smoke in his arms. It took him a second to realize that he was no longer snogging his girlfriend, and he sat up quickly.

“What’s at midnight!” he exclaimed, trying not to whine. Matt adjusted himself before standing, following Delilah out to the foyer of his flat. She was bouncing around trying to get her shoes on, scarf thrown around her neck and getting tangled around her legs.

“Charlie! Charlie is at midnight!” Delilah squeaked, teetering on one foot as she pulled up her boots. Matt grimaced at her mention of his brother, and he found himself, er--deflated. “It’s Christmas Eve! Charlie comes over at midnight every year!”

Matt put his arm out to stop Delilah from spinning around on her tiptoes as she lost her balance.

“Are you sure? He knew you were coming over here...” he said, trying to put on his best smile.

“I really can’t stay!”

Matt couldn’t help himself, and blurted out in tune to the holiday classic, “But, baby it’s cold outside!”

Delilah froze, arms up in the air as she attempted to slide on her cloak. Matt flushed.

“Did you just sing at me?”

“I did just sing at you.”’

She cracked a grin. “Is that going to be a new thing? You crooning to get me to stay the night?” Delilah teased, properly knotting her scarf. Matt could swear he’d never been so embarrassed in his life, but put his hands out.

“Is it working?”

“You do have a rather nice voice…”

“You could tell that from five words?”

Delilah waved her hand at him, “Go on, sing some more.”

“Er--” Matt blanched, then pressed his lips together. “Nope, sorry.”

“Well, then I guess I’ve got to go away…”

Matt grimaced, knowing she’d chosen her words carefully. Damn her for actually knowing this song. He’d been hoping it was one of his ‘muggly’ things, as Delilah liked to call them. Her teasing grin made him melt, however, and he pushed his embarrassment to the side.

“But, baby it’s cold outside,” Matt sang, moving forward to wrap his arms around her waist. Delilah put the back of her hand to her forehead, sighing dramatically.

“Matthew, this evening has been…” She managed to speak the words in such a casual tone that it sounded strange, like she was speaking a foreign language since it was not in the melody of the song, “it’s been…so very nice!”

“Okay, now you’re pushing it, lady.”
