[it would be good if this day was just like any other day, get up, work, work some more and then check by his brother's house to make sure everything was okay and then return home for a nights rest. today was that one time of the year that he hated. the anniversary of his father's death. normal families would go to the cemetery and pay their respects, have a drink or two and a dinner in honor but not when you were born to the father of one of the more powerful heads of organized crime in the city. it was bad enough that you had to be reminded by his lieutenants that you were a traitor to the family in the grand scale coming together of the men under his control but to be trailed by your own, two undercover officers easily picked watching him throughout the day. born into a family and no matter what you done, you were always persecuted by it, regardless of innocence.]

[now the rest of the night was free, taking to a local bar holding his own commemoration for him, cracking the seal on the second bottle of whiskey and pouring it into the glass that long lost its ice.] Cheers. [raises to glass up to no one but the row of bottles across the back wall, knocking down the drink no longer feeling the burn. everything was comfortably numb.]

[looks back at him as he locks the door, already knowing why but... a normal woman would have feared it, especially after locking the door and say he'd fix a drink. yeah, some nice drink that will knock you out and tomorrow you won't remember a thing. but isn't suspicious, and tries to act like having the door locked makes her feel safe, secure. country girl, big city. big safe detective.] Thank you. [offers a smile, setting her purse on the table, pulling a few sheets off the pack of paper inside, going to work on folding some more little flowers, setting them in the center of his table since it's covered in folders and notes and... this place could use a woman's touch, it reeks of man. not in scent, but in style.]

I'm sorry. It's hot chocolate or coffee. [leans back from the kitchen behind the wall, holding onto the wall so not to fall.] Unless you want them mixed together. [the pantry also reeks of man too. doesn't know how to shop well when you are immersed in all of those case files you see there. at least his gun is not easily accessible. that is in a locked safe.]

Coffee is fine. [looks around, adding little paper flowers to his counter, too.] Looks better now, hm?

[puts the coffee in the machine and waits for it to finishing dripping out into the cups, going over and looking at the little flowers she has made.] It adds a nice touch. [carefully touches one of them, being careful not to crush it with his uncoordinated hand.] You like origami? Something you learned for fun? A hobby? Was it taught to you by someone?

Where I grew up, the soil was too poor to contain much plant life... so I learned to create my own flowers. It's just a hobby, and a comfort. Do you have anything like that?

Something close. [that coffee is almost done but it will be enough time to show, going into the lounge room and opening up the sliding door, outside into the shaded area he had built and back in holding a bonsai tree in hand.] My comfort. It had been a bit neglected but we are building our bond back up again.

[looks the little tree over, gently cradling one of the leaves that looks like at one point something took a nibble from it, but it seems to be recovering now.] How long have you had it?

About ten years. We've been through a lot together. [feels bad about the damage done but work hours that he does are bad and the poor mini tree suffered from it.] When I finally retire, I want to grow one from scratch. This one was bought so not as fulfilling. It will still hold a place in my heart no matter where it came from.

Bonsai will outlive their caretakers, in most cases. In a way it's depressing but it's also beautiful. One tiny tree could see up to six generations of one family live, grow, and die. It's amazing to think about.

They are amazing. I always looked forward to passing this one down to my children and so forth. [ohh coffee finished, goes back over and adds the milk, putting it on the table with a sugar bowl just in case.] If not, I'm sure there will be someone who is willing to give it a good home.

[no sugar, thanks. likes her coffee how she likes her men, bitter and... white. whitish brown. okay just had enough sugar tonight with those daiquiris.] You've still got plenty of years left, I wouldn't worry about passing it on just yet.

I know there is plenty of time. [smiles and puts sugar into his coffee, stirring it around. maybe. the wife and him were trying but nothing was happening, he couldn't get her pregnant at all. maybe it was fate that he wasn't meant to have kids or he was under stress that his sperm wasn't happening. best not to think about this time in female company.] For now I will have to focus my attention on it to grow it back up big... small and strong, so one day when I am ready to pass him down, it will be in the best of health and cared of.

A noble cause. [gives a little smile, leaning against the counter, holding coffee cup with both hands and sipping.] ... Earlier in the cab. Why did you kiss me? [lacks the art of tact.]

I'm not too sure. There is something about you that seems familiar but not. [rubs his finger unconsciously over the band where his ring used to be.] It just felt right. [leaves his hand alone and goes back to his cup hands and fingers locked around the outside, sipping it quietly with a smile.] You're intriguing. I wouldn't mind learning more about you in the future if you don't mind.

Hm... Alright. But I'm going to make you work for it, detective. [taps chin with a finger, looking thoughtful.] You owe me a date already so... for every date you take me on, I'll tell you something important about me.

[given his past track record and the reason why his wife left, no, don't think of that. will be attentive and it's like a fresh start.] Then I will work hard to find out everything about you. [its like a little challenge. loves challenges even when they are stressing.] It's been a while since I dated so... would you say next week is moving too fast for taking you on that date?

I have some sweat pants and a shirt you can change into. They will be too large but it should be something comfortable at least. [or you can go naked... and there may be some peaking... will be a gentleman... just a little peak.]
