Thomas and Sarah- Meme- Angst- Seperation (AU)
She'd been gone for months without a word and with no way to trace her. Just vanished into thin air. Had it been anyone else he'd be mad that they could even pull that off without him finding them. But with her...well he'd admit he was more hurt than anything. If she was going to up and leave he'd expected...well at least a goodbye, or some note or something. Not just an empty place and no leads to follow.

Which is why she's the last person he expects to see when he drops by a supermarket in one of the smaller neighbourhoods on his way home. There's an initial moment of shock and then it hits him what she's buying and her...condition. He probably scares a few of the other customers by the way he stands there, eyebrow twitching in anger, and glaring daggers at the young woman innocently making her purchases.

He never makes it home. Instead he follows her, recklessly still in his civilian ID, as far as he can without alerting her to his presence to where she's staying. Still blinded by anger, he doesn't wait till it's completely dark and changes to Robin gear to sneak into her living room ahead of her.

A tall shadow looms behind Sarah's couch, eyebrow still twitching, as she enters.

Finding said step-ladder, he brings it along as they enter the room. Standing there for a moment he takes it all in. Hard to imagine this would be a child's nursery. And not just any kid.

Shaking himself out of it he sets up the ladder and starts measuring the walls, occasionally calling out measurements as he commits them to memory.

Oh Sarah? He won't be letting you pay for almost anything. Not if he can help it. Alternate universe or no, the son of the billionaire Bruce Wayne does not let other people pay. Especially not for his mistakes.

	She writes them down even though she won't forget them. She just doesn't want to risk it. Sarah has trouble with that too but after being pregnant for several months she has an easier time picturing things. She just knows that this room will look fine after some fresh paint is added and she gets the stuff she needs. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

	"There's this place on Oak and Fifth that has shelves I want to look at. Since I'm just going to go with white paint anyways I'll have to find something interesting as far as shelves go." "I rented a car for the day so you won't have to walk much." He wasn't going to risk taking a car from the manor and having the old man find out, and you didn't make a pregnant woman walk everywhere or ride on the back of a motorcycle. Public transit was also out of the question. So rented car in cash it was.

He gets his coat back on and holds the door for her. "So just paint and shelves today?" It helped to just think of this as a series of things to do and not look at the big picture. He was really trying his best to stay in a decent mood despite everything.

He couldn't get over how calm she was. And how she seemed to have it all planned out. Well, she'd done her panic moment already and had run away. Considering he was still here, he'd consider that a victory of some sort. Not sure what though.

Nodding absentmindedly he opens the car door for her. "This made more sense. Now we don't need to worry about hailing cabs and so forth, just drive where we need." Besides, he liked driving around the city when it wasn't rush hour. Driving her around wouldn't be a bad bonus either. He shoots her a small smile back, "No problem."

	She had her freak out all ready. Besides the fact that having more than a few stolen hours of sleep really helped Sarah out. "Might be cheaper in the long run," she decides figuring she can just go along with it. Now she looks up at him. "I haven't seven thought of this but.... should I wear a disguise?" He was about to start the car but blinks at her when she asks about disguises. "Depends. Whatever you're planning on looking like for your new ID is what you should go with. Because if you need deliveries and buy the stuff as a redhead but they come to your door and you're your normal self that'll be more suspicious. Especially since I assume whoever you got this place from has seen you like this already, it's too late to change now."

He gives her a reassuring smile, "Don't worry I'm here. Not letting anything happen to you. Just ask me for stuff okay?"

	"The Mob doesn't know what I really look like," she admits. "They assume I use a disguise most of the time which is true.... the door man saw me like this all ready, I'll be safe going like this." She bites her lower lip at the last things he says. "I'll do my best.... I trust you with this stuff. So far you haven't had a melt down like I have as far as I know." He throws her a humourless smile as he starts the car, "Well considering I'm in a car with you and not halfway across the world...I think it's pretty obvious I haven't had your kind of meltdown." "...worse? What do you mean worse?" Another good thing about renting a car, they could talk freely and she couldn't escape and try to wriggle out of questioning.

Frankly he's still mad and quite hurt she left without telling him about all this, but he had to admit that he still...well liked sounded so juvenile but it was true. He still wanted her in his life, and her running just told him she didn't feel the same. He hasn't gotten over that.

"I don't remember my birth parents," she says slowly trying to not let it upset her. "I've been an orphan pretty much my whole life and I have no idea what a family should be like.... The Old Man and I are close but more like a student and teacher so I kind of...."

She doesn't want to talk about this. "It hurt. That's all. I don't like people seeing me when I'm hurting so I hid out in a bed somewhere pretty much sulking and living off of takeout for almost two weeks. Not very much like how I'd usually do things."

She's had it rough, and he really doesn't know what to say to that. "I'm sorry about that Sarah. And I...don't think I'm the best judge of what is normal for a family." Despite field injuries and the like, he'd had an enjoyable childhood. But it didn't mean it was anything approaching normal, and he was well aware of that.

Staring at the road he really wants to tell her that if she hadn't run, if she'd told him, then she wouldn't have had to go through that. But he says nothing, he really doesn't need to, his silence says it for him.

If only he knew where they stood. Then he'd know if he should hug her or something just to comfort her. But he's driving and things between them are still muddled so he can't.

She didn't bother trying to smile. There was no need to reassure anyone right now. At least she wasn't getting emotional to the point of tears because she didn't like getting that bad.

"I'm sorry I ran." She is sorry because she missed Thomas more than she missed anything else about Gotham. Even if they don't get her mentor freed from the Mob it will still be worth coming back here. It's obvious there is more for her to say but she's holding back right now.

He doesn't say anything to that. As much as he wants to forgive her, her running made him feel so...rejected. Like she didn't want him around, he wasn't important, or he just wasn't good enough. Like usual.

When he hits the next stop light he turns to look at her and waits. He can see she's holding something back and the look he gives her tells her he's waiting for her to continue.

So the sarcasm comes out to try and hide how hurt he is, but it doesn't do a very good job.

He could get over it, and he somewhat knows this, but it's too fresh and so far she hasn't done much to dispel the fear that his suspicions that she didn't tell him were because...well she didn't think he could do anything for her. Or that he didn't matter. Great, the one person who didn't remind him he didn't belong and he actually liked and he wasn't even sure if she gave a damn about him.

This is the worst way for anything to happen she thinks. Especially when she's on the verge of crying again because the defensive sarcasm did hurt because Sarah did care about him a lot. Hurting him was the worst thing that could happen.

"It was too late to turn around after I finally stopped running long enough to think sensibly..... at least I thought it was..... and I don't want to do this just because I need you. I want to be here because it's you, and I guess that's just as selfish as running like I did."

And now she can't even look at him.She's afraid of what she might see at this point.

Okay, he can't do this while driving so he pulls into a nearby parking lot, conveniently not too far from their destination, and when he's finally stopped he sits back and just looks at the ceiling for a bit.

"I...used to think I somewhat understood you. But now...you run from everything and me and then you come back and say that it was partially because of me. I don't...I don't get you anymore. Just...stop messing with me please?"

He leans forward to rest his forehead against the steering wheel and closes his eyes. "Sarah just...answer honestly okay? Do you want me around at all? Don't just say yes because you think if you don't I won't be there for the kid or help you with that. I will, I promise. Just...I don't...I don't know anything right now. I wish I did." It's probably the most vulnerable he's been around her, and admitting he didn't get something or he didn't know what to do, that was hard. He's just so sick of everything being so muddled and pretending it didn't all hurt.

Oh she likely would never fix this. She cares about him which is why this is so hard to decide upon. She wants him in her life. He hasn't ever really pushed her.

She reaches to move him so he can see her.

"If I was stupid I'd lie to you. Tell you I would be happy just being friends but.... I was afraid you'd want just that. It's what's really bothered me since I ran.... because I care. I want you around but.... I don't want to push either. So I'll take what I can get."

He still looks lost and rather hurt, and her non-answer doesn't help. "Sarah you're not pushing me...I like you okay? Just...I don't know if you do too and I like...us. So I'm saying if you wanted friends or something else that's...I'm okay with it just...make up your mind and tell me okay?" Great, was this his breakdown? Here in a parking lot, secretly glad the sunglasses hide his eyes, and just unable to make himself clear. He still wanted her with him, but he was so confused right now.
