Cashing a Rain Check
"The term 'Hurricanes' just doesn't seem right for a hockey team," Vernique admits as they arrive at their seats.

"Hockey from places that never get snow seem odd enough to me, whatever they want to call themselves." he responds.

Despite the opponent, its still hockey. Even better, its hockey - one of his favorite choices in entertainment - with Vernique.

"Ii'm sure it must be. Calling themselves a reminder of what they're weather actually is just seems like juxtapositional icing on the oddness cake. Oh, and speaking of sweets, I don't think I've thanked you enough for those chocolates. Remind me later." She grins.

"Oh, coming along to a hockey game is plenty of thanks. But if you insist, I'll be sure to bring it up at some suitably interesting moment."

She chuckles. "And I trust you won't mind if I ask too many questions. It's all way too fast for delicate American sensibilities, after all."

"Ask all the questions you like. If I have even the remotest chance of turning you into a hockey fan, I'm happy to answer anything that comes up."

"Thank you. How well have the Habs been doing this season, anyway?"

"14-4, tied for first place in the East, right where they should be. Picking back up from last season. Hard to say what will come of the playoffs, with all the confusion the lockout created. For now, they look pretty strong though."

"Well, I'm definitely happy for you there, at least. The whole lockout thing, of course, I'd barely know enough to talk about it, but sheesh, professional sports labor disputes are just ... weird. If they were handled that way at Neville, Mom would fire someone. She's very big on settling strikes properly. Now, that guy over there's the center, right? Then at least I'll be able to keep track of one of them..."

Jordan nods, explaining the different positions, where they play, and where they tend to go on the ice. Then he explains line changes, how the players will often change in and out in shifts. He'll point out the other two main centers for the other lines.

"One of those three will usually be primary puck handler, and try and set things up."

And she listens to everything. She doesn't know all that terribly much about hockey, but she certainly prefers to know what's going on, and she's got a reasonably good memory and keen eye. "Good to know, thanks. And yeah, that makes sense, with it's being so high energy."

"Exactly. And the line shifts become part of the strategy. How long can you keep control of the puck and force the other team to keep tired lines on, do you want a possession more or to bury the puck deep and get a line change, or trying to take advantage of the time to change off. No one can get onto the ice until their corresponding man is off, so its always a risk."

"Huh, yeah, I can see how that'd be a big factor. What's the official policy regarding stopping the clock, anyway?"

"There's not a lot of stoppages. The ref can stop the clock for penalties, anything that requires setting up a face off or for fights, but its at the ref's discretion. Clock stops and starts on the whistle."

"Ahh. Interesting. Makes sense, on context, of course."
