It was like some kind of instinct. Every time she had another nightmare about becoming the Phoenix and destroying people, he'd wake her up with hot food and drink, setting the tray aside to hold her.

And Rachel was a good listener -- so much so that after a few months, she couldn't even think of touching sun-grown chocolate again.

Eventually, very eventually, Corey one day handed Rachel a peanut brittle container. The classic kind, that never actually contains peanut brittle.
Rolling her eyes, Rachel turned the container away from herself as she opened it. No springs came out. Finally, she turned to look inside.
It was a beautiful sapphire ring.
