Anya Stark had come down to New Orleans during Mardi Gras in her final year of college. She stopped at the Mayor's personal viewing party for the Endymion parade. Corey was in attendance because he'd won an art major's contest for designing and sculpting one of the showcased floats.

They ran into each other checking it out at the window, said hi, fell to talking about the holiday, how she should see it in Rio, the life, their families.
Finally, Corey was surprised to find himself asking "Do you want to go for some coffee after the parade?"
And she was surprised to find herself saying yes.

Everyone has little things he or she does in a relationship to show that they care.

Sometimes it's knocking on her lab door every night with a hot homecooked meal.

Sometimes it's making a few polite phone calls to arrange a commission of 'the sculpture that is to slash-and-burn agriculture what the painting Guernica was to the Spanish Civil War' for a nice spot at the front of the Metropolitan Museum.

Sometimes it's leaving beautiful little figurines with encouraging notes as she's getting work done.

Sometimes it's introducing your fiance to Wall Street's top analysts when he really needs someone to listen about rewarding ecologically responsible beef ranching firms.

And sometimes, it's sitting back together to enjoy the look on one's American grandfather's face as he blusters, "You're taking her name?"

Robert Antoninus Stark was incorrigible. Messy. Flippant.

But he maintained perfect grades, with an especial love of math, and enjoyed making aluminum sculptures.

Recycled aluminum, of course. Don't get that kid started on what the mining industry was doing to Brazil. Or, well, what it had been doing before Mom and Dad got on the case.

Vernique was a Good Girl. A guy like Charlie didn't need to be seduced in the unstable environment of timestream-hopping. Now, one waited until things had returned to normal back home, her affairs in order, with confirmation no pending relationships were goign to work out.

Then one waltzed up in that little low, low, low cut red number and asked him out.

It didn't take long for Charlie to make clear that he didn't want a spot in Vernique's rotation. He wanted a proper, old-fashioned relationship.

And it didn't take too much longer after that for Vernique to decide it was worth it.

Valentina Stephanie Rogers was a hell of a shot. She kept her honey-colored pigtails back out of the way of the earmuffs at the shooting range, safety glasses over those fiercely intelligent brown eyes. Practice made perfect. Shooting range right before lunch with mom and grandma, then hand to hand lessons with dad and Grandpa Steve in the afternoon.

"Do I even want to know what this is, Corey?" Rachel asked as she followed him along the grounds.

"Sure you do!" He said cheerfully.

And then they got there. "I think it's my best work," he said earnestly, as Rachel looked up at a huge earth-sculpted portrait of herself.
"Oh, Corey, it's very nice."
She gave him a sweet kiss on the cheek. And then, being that close, she shifted and gave him one on the mouth, for good measure. And then... well, then one thing led to another.

It was like some kind of instinct. Every time she had another nightmare about becoming the Phoenix and destroying people, he'd wake her up with hot food and drink, setting the tray aside to hold her.

And Rachel was a good listener -- so much so that after a few months, she couldn't even think of touching sun-grown chocolate again.

Eventually, very eventually, Corey one day handed Rachel a peanut brittle container. The classic kind, that never actually contains peanut brittle.
Rolling her eyes, Rachel turned the container away from herself as she opened it. No springs came out. Finally, she turned to look inside.
It was a beautiful sapphire ring.

Donatella Jean Drake-Summers was fire and life incarnate.

And the little pyromaniac scared the life out of her Grandpa Scott. "Donna Did It" was a correct assumption more often than not, even if she hadn't meant to.

((same rules as other Kristoff stuff: single for ten years, and, yeah, let's say that she /didn't/ get romantically involved with his brother))

This line of thinking was completely inappropriate, Kristoff told himself. He'd helped bring her to life! But of course, she'd never been a child. Always the beautiful young woman she was now, always learning, always caring.

"Kristoff? Are you all right." Devel, he was staring.
"Andrea... would you excuse a request to have dinner with me tonight?"
"Of course. And I would like that."

Attentive afternoon teas. Long evening conversations in which technical exchanges and discussions of team matters gave way to talk about hopes and dreams and the meaning of identity. Eventually -- very eventually, when they were certain she was ready -- physical attentions.

Kristoff was 33 and Andrea was developmentally 22 when he finally sank to his knees with the specially modified diamond he'd made himself. "Will you be my wife?"

As a mathematician and a kindergarten teacher, Dr. and Mrs. Vernard were ideal prospects for adoption.

As members of the Fantastic Four, not quite so much. But an agency specializing in placing children with obvious mutations was slightly less fussy than others.

Adrian Vernard had pointed ears, iridescent hair, tons of babyfat, and overprotective parents.

They were having a perfectly normal afternoon at the shooting range, talking about various and sundry things. Work. Home. Family.

Then, as she leaned to properly annihilate a target, her Realizations started telling her things about Nicolai's body temperature and breathing patterns.
He was worked up. He didn't get worked up from plain old firearms practice that he could literally do blindfolded.
She lowered the gun when she was finished with the target, and put the safety on.
"Nicolai?" She steps closer. "Was there something you wanted?" And closer.
Eventually, she's too close to resist. "Yes," he says, pulling her into a kiss.

Their mothers had both warned them not to let it get in the way of their work. And being their mothers' children, neither of them did. They were impeccably professional on the field or in the office, and steaming up the bedroom or car windows off-duty.

And once she manifested, she could mind control roomsful of people like marionettes.

She didn't, though. That was just bad policy, her parents and grandparents agreed.

She'd gone running to him in frustration. Andrew was her dearest friend, but she couldn't heap all of this on him right now.

Work always came first. Not only was Andrew still a very dear friend, but what they were doing was too important to ever jeopardize with time spent on a relationship. And Julian understood that completely. She kept both of their confidences reliably, though she'd made it abundantly clear to Julian that if his ideas posed any threat to Andrew or to Genosha, love would not save him.

A few years later, during a rare visit to meet with his father, Julian revealed he had something else on the agenda.
"Mr. Bennet, I wish to ask for your daughter's hand."

It was a rare, rare thing for Cindy to find herself attracted to a guy -- other than her beloved Joshua on the West Wing -- and so it took her by surprise to hear her heart flutter when she found out that Jai was currently amicably single.

Should she pursue this? From what angle? It took a great deal of planning.

So she get tickets to the stylized biopic of Rene Descartes. Complete with swashbuckling. How could he tell her no?

((I think this woudl need to be so AU that Kristoff hadn't gotten back with Cassie since they were 18. So...single for ten years)).

Dr. Kristoff Vernard. was very careful approaching their makeshift allies after the battle. As far as he could tell, Asgardians were very lineage-oriented, and his brother's mother was on very bad times with the ladies' mother. The last thing he wanted was for Vincent to get himself hurt by insulting someone.
So as much as he disliked conversing with strangers, he took the initiative.

And was... pleasantly surprised.
"Thou and thy team shouldst join us for a drink to celebrate our victory, Dr. Vernard," Aridis Thorsdottir said, nudging her sister when the latter seemed reluctant to go along.
"I... well... we would be happy to, Miss."

It was a courtship halfway between friendly and formal, considering Kristoff's old-world manners and Aridis's free spiritedness despite being literally from an old world.
As family-oriented as they both are, they manage to figure out a way to seat group dinners keeping Vincent as far away from Svalin as possible -- and always near Aslief. That helps.

Eventually, they announce their intention, once Kristoff can avail himself of her mothers' permissions, to marry.

It's when Aridis mentions "And we shalt ask my dear friend Gunnhild Volstaggsdottir, too" that Kristoff starts to....twitch.

Miranda Aridissdottir is, without a doubt, the most brilliant girl in Asgarad. Most say she bears a striking resemblance to her Grandmother Sif, although her complexion is just slightly darker. And it is the lesson with Sif and her aunt Svalin that she likes best, in Tactics.

The gathering of the Champions had been the first time they'd seen each other since Russia. Corey and Eliza really enjoyed reconnected as soon as their lives were no longer in danger. They talked long, long into the night about everything they'd just gone through, about the idea of moving to New Orleans, about their families.
Just before bed, she kissed him.

It was a lecture series on Spanish Visual Culture. While hearing about Antoni Gaudi, Jack noticed the girl in the wheelchair on the aisle seat fidgeting.
Fidgeting with the hands just barely poking out of the long denim skirt.

Not something one sees every day.
He wondered how those... arms must look. What it would be like to draw.

But he's not going to go around drawing attention to someone's mutation.
Still, afterwards, he politely asks, "So what did you think?"
"Really fascinating. Especially the skull house. I know a guy who'd just love to top that."
"Oh? You've got a friend in architecture? Boyfriend?"
"Ohh no. I've got a basically-cousin who's a sculptor. You in architecture?"
"Yeah. Can't say skull houses would be my thing, though."
"Well, obviously, they're not for everybody. Say, do you want to get coffee?"

((Same dumped-at-18 caveat to better make it seem remotely plausible.))

This was absurd. He was merely going to discuss some important matters with Namor. He'd known the man since he was twelve years old; it shouldn't be that hard. But he knew there was more to it than that.
It hadn't been a problem when his brother had made an ass of himself; he could simply tell himself the girl was far too young, berate himself for any residual weakness for beautiful young women with names that sounded like "Cassie," and move on.
It was meeting her again later that was difficult. And the next year, and the next. She was beautiful, she was fierce, and she was an adult he couldn't shake from his mind anymore.

"Miss McKenzie, if you will excuse the request, could possibly presume to invite you to tea at the Baxter Building?"
"...I think I could do that."

At first people could dismiss it. Kristoff making someone tea and seeming as if he wanted to wait on them hand and foot and politely engage them about their opinions wasn't that weird, just weird with someone outside the family.

The family knew it was serious when Kristoff snapped at Vincent in uncharacteristically harsh Romany for attempting to give Kassia hard time.

And as foolish as it was, it was a matter of manners: Kristoff very obviously disengaged all of his armor's automatic defenses before asking Namor about marrying his daughter.

Christine Miranda McKenzie Vernard was a manipulative, but not malicious, little girl. She'd cut her teeth pulling Daddy's strings and only ever gotten better at it, the best cold read and shrewdest negotiator that first grade had ever seen. Not to mention the black curls, big blue eyes, and dimples.
