For this meme, choose one character of yours and one character of mine-- and then I will write out how they hook up, settle into a long term relationship and/or marriage, and describe their firstborn child/children, if any. Crack pairings and old characters are acceptable.

When this mission of charging through realities began, Eli Paravich knew precious little of Svalin Thorsdottir. He knew of her people, the Asgardians and how they had worked alongside the Eternals on various occasions to save the world that their peoples mutually called home.

He knew that Svalin was a fierce warrior and that she could be as unyielding as the icy lands of Polaria.

What he did not know was that it would take him nearly a year to know her, but only moments to fall in love with her. They spent evenings talking about all of the things that they could and would do with their lives, since they both had more time than anyone else on the team, save Iason, to enjoy them.

The mutual affection they shared for Vernique was another bonding point, but what drew him to her most was her passion for battle and for being worthy of her people. Eli found, under Svalin's tutelage, that he also enjoyed battle in all its forms.

Even when she is kicking his ass all over the Avengers' Training Room, like she is right now.

The point of her sword lands at his throat for the 150th time in three days. During this three-day cycle, they have not slept, have barely eaten, and only speak to taunt each other.

"Doth thou yield, Friend Eli?" Svalin asks with a wicked smile. Eli isn't sure when it happened, but Svalin not only learned to jest, but she did it with surprising aplomb. Vernique's influence has paid dividends, bringing out another side of the warrior woman that is playful and charming, with a vulnerability that belies her great strength.

"I yield this round, Friend Svalin. On to the next. However, I think that this time...we shall make a wager. If you defeat me, I will groom and feed Tryggvi for three months.

If I defeat you, I choose my prize." Eli says, offering his hand to shake and seal the deal.

Svalin's eyes narrow, considering what Eli might ask her for. He would not dare ask for her her steed, or her sword. She is certain of two things: that Eli is crafty and that he is up to something. Still, the idea of a Polarian prince cleaning up after a horse is an amusing sight in her mind. She grips his hand firmly, then steps back and salutes with her sword.

The two of them stare each other down from a few feet away...and then they lunge at each other again.

Six hours later, the point of Eli's sword is at Svalin's throat, and a bright grin settles on his face, as if he's won the event that the humans call the lottery.

"Thou hast won in fair combat, Prince of Polaria. What prize doth thou claim from this the Shield of Asgard?" Svalin asks.

"Come closer and I shall tell you, Friend Svalin." Eli teases.

All he wanted was a kiss and Svalin obliged him.

The first kiss led to a second, the second to a third. Eli could not fly, but after kissing her, he was certain that he could at least hover somewhat. He spends time with both Svalin and Vernique when he can, when duty does not call him back to Polaria to deal with his father or Avengers' business doesn't call them away to face some manner of alien menace.

He always gives Vernique and Svalin their time to be together and enjoy each other's company, never seeking to insert himself into their relationship. Over time, though, Eli finds that his life his enriched by the presence of /both/ women, more than either one alone.

One evening, he can no longer stand the idea of living without either of them and makes a decision.

Finding both women together with little Solver one evening, Eli walks into the room and walks toward both of them. He then drops to his knees and presents them each with a ring.

"I will not choose between the two of you, for that is unfair to us all. I will, however, ask you both to consider marrying me, because I cannot live without either of you. Will you have me?" he asks, trying to steel himself inwardly for their answer, no matter what it is.

Svalin and Vernique look to each other, a long silent moment going by as they seem to be having a conversation without words. Then they both look at him and speak in unison.

"Come closer, Eli, and will tell you our answer." both women smile.

"Solver, can we agree that it is best that your mothers do not find out that Veronica tried to fly after she saw you do it?" Eli asks the little boy.

Solver nods yes and Eli hands the boy a pudding cup, sitting down to eat his own while Veronica naps. Even if he does have nearly limitless stamina, the two children tire him out mentally...and he loves every minute of it.

"We'll also neglect to mention that that Veronica tried to call your grandfather and that she accidentally conference called the Nevell Board Members by mistake. Or that Loki stopped by to see you both. Momone would definitely not be fond of that..." Eli says, considering everything else that had happened while his wives were out today.

"In fact, Solver, it's probably best if you let me do the talking when they show up. If the worst happens, I can teleport us all to Toys'R'Us until they stop being mad. How does that sound?"

Solver smiles brightly, liking the idea of going to Toys'R'Us today.

Perhaps he'll forget what Uncle Eli just said about forgetting to tell his mothers about their day...

"Father, how did you meet Mother?" young Olivia Jane "Oli" Queen asks as she finishes carving the last arrow for her new bow.

"Well...it is a long story that requires little girls to get ready for bed if it is to be told properly." Robert says, smiling at his dark-haired little girl, the spitting image of her mother and grandmothers before her. He lets Oli down and the little girl runs for the bathroom to brush her teeth and wash her face.

Soon enough, Robert sits in the chair by Oli's bedside.

"So, Father, how did you meet mother?" Oli asks again.

"She was trying to kill me." he answers simply.

"Why?"

"Because I killed her father." Robert answers again.

Oli considers this before asking her next question. "Why did you kill her father?"

"Because he tried to kill me, first, my little wolf. There is nothing wrong with killing a man who tries to kill you first. If he is worthy, you will die. If his not, he will die. That is the way of things, now and always." Robert tells her.

Olivia nods, remembering what her father and mother always tell her about life and death.

"Do you remember what she first said to you?" Oli asks with a smile.

"Yes, I do. She said 'You are a liar, Robert Queen.'" Robert says, smiling at her as his mind travels back down the years.

----

Robert pulled himself out of the water and thought he would bleed to death right there on the shore. Well, if infection didn't take him first, that is. He had no clue who the woman was that tried to kill him, but he vowed to find out if he didn't die.

As luck would have it, he found her again in Star City two months later. Ironically, she'd been sent to murder /his/ father, Oliver Queen...and Robert himself was too late to stop it. A small part of Robert died that day, grieving for the father he'd never known. Keith and the others had inherited everything Oliver had, and Robert was left with exactly what Oliver gave him in life.

Nothing.

Still, Robert chose to dedicate himself to finding Oliver's killer, if only to avenge his father and make the pain go away.

"When I found her, she was surrounded by the Seven Men of Death, Oli. Her cousin, Henry, had already killed her brother Damien, and though I did not know it at the time, my brother Joseph. He'd killed and replaced the Demon's Head.

Now he was trying to remove the Demon's Fang from the equation." Robert tells his little girl.

"What did you do, Father?" the little girl asks, listening with rapt attention.

"No one takes what is mine, Oli...not even my kills." Robert says, reminiscing once again.

The two of them fought the Seven as much as they fought each other that night. By the end, they'd been beaten by the four remaining members and brought before Henry Cain.

"Rather than killing us, Henry forced us to endure the worst torture imaginable." Robert tells his daughter.

"Did he pull our your fingernails? Or did he cut you over and over?" she asks.

"Worse. He chained us up facing each other and let us hang that way for hours at a time." Robert says. "Your mother broke my nose three times that first day.

She would hurt me physically and I would attack her emotionally. Eventually, we found ourselves too tired and battered to fight and with only enough energy to hurl insults at each other. Somewhere along the way, we learned to talk to each other in acidic tones that gave way to more civil ones." Robert says.

He still remembered the day, after months of being chained together, that he decided that killing her was no longer as important as keeping her alive so that he could use her to get out of here.

"We will kill Henry Cain, and then go our separate ways, Morgaine. But if the chance to kill you comes up afterward...I will take it." Robert said, looking directly into those eyes of hers.

"You are a a liar, Robert Queen." she said to him, then.

She always knew when he was lying.

"Eventually, we escaped and we killed Henry Cain, leaving the League of Assassin's in disarray. She refused to be the Demon's Head and I had no other purpose in life. We honored our deal and went our separate ways." Robert said, looking back to Oli.

The little girl was fighting sleep as best she could, pinching herself to stay awake.

"What...happened next, Father?" Oli yawned.

"Two years later, your mother was in trouble and...for some reason, she called me. She was being held prisoner in Khandaq by Black Adam, who decided that she'd make a fine addition to his harem. Of course, he'd neglected your mother's views on the matter and kept her imprisoned.

I called some favors and got a few people to aid me in getting her out of there. Your Aunts Rose and Lian thought I was insane and said so /loudly/. But it was your Aunt Mia who told me that which I already knew." Robert says.

You wouldn't be going against a near-god for a woman you don't care about, Robbie. If you care for her, tell her, because she won't know any other way.

"So...you rescued Mother from an evil God?" Oli says, her eyes filled with awe.

"Actually, your mother rescued /me/ from Black Adam. He'd hit me with his lightning bolt, which hurts like hell, by the way. But he was about to break my neck when the arrow when through his chest.

Your mother saved my life. We spent a lot more time together after that. We said that we were waiting for the right moment to betray and kill each other, but I don't think very many people believed us." Robert chuckles.

He looks over to see what Oli thinks about that and finds that their daughter has fallen asleep with a smile on her face.

"If you fought half as well as you tell stories, you'd be a master warrior, Robert." Morgaine says from the doorway.

"If I were a master warrior, you'd be trying to kill me while our daughter watches, Lady Shiva. I prefer to be the master archer in this family and let you handle the hand-to-hand." he says, his hand idly going to the knife at his hip. He stands up and walks over to Morgaine at the door way, looking down at her.

"Our daughter is beautiful. She comes from good stock." he says.

"I hated every second of carrying her and the effort it took to create her, even if it was worthwhile at the time. I will not bear another child for you and if you even think of asking, I will beat you to death and tell her you fell on your sword." Morgaine says, looking Robert dead in the eyes.

Robert stares at her for a moment or two longer, then smirks.

"You're a liar, Morgaine King."

Morgaine's expression remains impenetrable for another long moment before she smiles, which Robert considers the most beautiful expression in the world.

"I am lying. But I tell the truth now: I want another child, Robert. With you." she says, looking away. He knows what it cost her to admit that to him, that she feels for him where she has never felt for anyone else.

"Then we will have another child." he says, kissing her.

"Even if I have to rescue you from another demigod to do it." he grins.

Morgaine King, Lady Shiva, rolls her eyes at her lover.

"You are /such/ a liar, Robert Queen. I would kill you if I did not love you so." she tells him, taking his hand and leading him away to their bedroom, leaving their daughter to dream.

A Match Made In Hellfire (Part I)
[info]blinkandmissme
2010-10-28 10:30 pm UTC (link)
Julian Howard remembered the night, the exact moment, his life changed forever. He would remember it as long as he lived, even if he lived to be over 10,000 years old, as his mother before him is.

The Popular Outcast, one of his many night clubs was doing booming business, enough so that his advisors suggested opening yet another location. Eventually, Julian chose New Orleans as the destination, both because he owned property in neighboring towns and because New Orleans was a Mecca for those who loved the nightlife. He’d picked his four best suits and boarded his plane, going over the speech he would deliver to his investors. Warren Worthington would be the toughest to sell on the idea, but Julian had other reasons for wanting to meet the man in question.

Warren’s daughter threw a wrench into his carefully crafted plans.

Julian was enchanted the moment his eyes met Lyta’s. She looked like an angel sent from heaven to steal his heart. He will never admit to thinking that, but so it was. She wore a white pantsuit that brought out her blue eyes, but Julian also thought she’d look far better in black. After the meeting, he seemed to have the entire group enthralled, all except for Lyta, whose expression seemed…bored. Julian couldn’t fully decipher that expression, which drew his attention to her all the more.

The moment the meeting ended, Julian called upon his manservant, Paulo, to deliver a message to Lyta.

“Tell her that I seek her company tonight for dinner and I’d be happy to go anywhere she chooses.” Julian says.

Paulo left and returned one hour later with Lyta’s response.

“She declined your offer, Master.” Paulo said, fully expecting these to be the last moments of his life.

“She did what?” Julian asked incredulously. His ears must have failed him. Women didn’t decline his advances.

“She said—“

“I heard you, Paulo. Why would she decline?” Julian asks, wracking his brain. “All right, take her a dozen orchids tomorrow and ask again.”

The following day, Paulo returns with the same news. At this point, he decides to switch tactics. Two days later, Julian called Lyta to a meeting, neglecting to mention that the rest of the investors were not invited.

“I see you got my message, Miss Worthington.” Julian says.

Lyta smiles at Julian, the expression somewhere between amused and unkind. “And it looks like you picked up on mine.”

“I beg your pardon?” Julian asks.

“Your money, your fancy suits and your charm school smile don’t impress me, Julian. I get the same treatment from almost every guy I run across in these circles. I don’t work through proxies, either. If you want something from me, don’t send your manservant to ask. It shows a lack of confidence, even if one doesn’t exist.” Lyta says.

Julian nods. “Your points are noted and taken, Miss Worthington.”

“And call me Lyta, please, Julian. I think we’ve been talking long enough to at least use names.” she smiles.

“Very well, Lyta. /Now/, will you have dinner with me?” Julian asks.

“No.” she says. The look on his face was priceless. She wished she could show it to him. She also wished she could read his mind and confirm what she thought he was after, but it wasn’t working.

“All right, then.” Julian says, starting to get up.

“Why are you after my company?” she asks suddenly.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t catch that.” Julian says.

“Don’t play games with me. I know you helped take over Shaw Industries and you’ve had your eye on other big-name companies. You’ve been trying to meet with my dad for months. You’re not getting Worthington. Back off or I’ll make sure every one of your investors backs out and you don’t get your little club here in The Big Easy.” Lyta says.

Julian regards her for a moment. “Come to dinner with me and I’ll tell you what I’m planning. I guarantee it’s not what you think.”

He offers her his hand. She knows this is a trap of some kind, but she still can’t see it and she can’t read his mind without forcing her way in.

“Fine.” she says, taking the offered hand and staring daggers at Julian Howard.

She hoped she wasn’t going to be sorry for going along with this.

Oh, was Lyta sorry, but not in the way she expected.

Julian brought her into the Hellfire Club as his Black Rook and showed her just how far his reach extended and how much power he could bring to bear. In time, he trusted her enough to share his true plan for what he intended to ask her father. Lyta wasn’t sure Warren would go for it, but she got him the meeting.

Nineteen months later, President Warren Worthington III was sworn into office as the 45th President of the United States and the country’s first mutant president. Diplomatic relations open up with Wakanda and, surprisingly, Genosha as well. Julian’s hand remains invisible, but his relationship with the President’s daughter does not. Julian and Lyta become the JFK Jr and Caroline Kennedy. They go to dinners, functions and they become a focus of just about anyone who wants to speak to the President.

In time, people start digging into Julian’s past and find little items that don’t match up. They find discrepancies in timelines that only the sharpest would pick up. One night, Julian receives a phone call from someone who knows his secret. Rather than lie again, Julian tells Lyta everything. He tells her of his upbringing, his mother and father, and how he only wants to make sure that mutants everywhere receive a fair chance.

He expects anger form her, or hatred. He even expects her to throw him out and join the people who will hate him for being Magneto’s son.

“Julian, I love you. You’ve never let anyone push you around or tell you what can and can’t be done before, so why start now? You’re the Gray King; you win by any means necessary because in life you either win or die, like you told me. So do what you have to do protect the three of us.” Lyta says with a smile.

Even as he hears the words, it takes him a full minute to comprehend what she just said to him. His resolve solidified at Lyta’s encouragement, but now it hardens into iron at her announcement

“I no longer want you as my Rook, Lyta. I want you to be my queen, now and forever.” Julian states. When Lyta kisses him, her wings enveloping their little family, he doesn’t even have to hear her in his mind to know her answer.

The arrival of their son, Erik Warren Howard, brings the Black King and Queen even closer than before. The love they share is pure and perfect, though not in the fairy tale sense. They challenge each other and call each other on their follies, but they are never cruel or intentionally terrible to each other.
Erik grows up in a loving home with parents who push him to excel. His extended family ensures that the boy never wants for anything, but also understands the value of working for what he desires most. In time, Erik Howard becomes the 55th President of the United States and the Gray King of the Hellfire Club, becoming the one of the most influential men in the world.

He never forgets to thank his parents for teaching him everything he knows, especially how to seize the moment for all it is worth.

Forgiveness (Cassidy/Mina)
[info]blinkandmissme
2010-10-29 12:35 am UTC (link)
Cassidy kneels at the altar, saying a prayer as he has every year on this day, for the last two years, for the souls of good people who were taken long before their time. He tries to do this early enough so that no one will catch him here, because even now, he feels that he has no right ask God for any favors after all he's done.

"Heavenly Father, please watch over and keep Jake as well. He didn't deserve what happened to him and I swear that I'm trying to be a better man ever single day. I don't know how well I'm doing, but...I'm trying." he says quietly, sighing.

"I think you're doing the best you can, Cassidy, but you're not going to do any better until you learn to let go of the past." Mina Wagner says, walking up silently behind him.

Cassidy's entire body tenses both inside and out. It never gets any easier to look at her, no matter how many years go by. Not because she isn't beautiful; she is. But because she's the sister of the person he killed two years ago. Even if he didn't mean to do it, he was already responsible for the deaths of 3,101 prior to Jake's passing. Even if he could forgive himself for Jake, he could never forgive himself for the rest of them.

"That's not going to happen, Mina. Some people aren't deserving of forgiveness." Cassidy says, standing up and turning to go.

"Cassidy, if the world was really like that, a lot of us wouldn't be here right now." Mina says quietly.

"Why do you even /care/, Mina? You're the /last/ person who should forgive me, so why does it matter to you?" he asks.

Mina's about to answer when their comms go off. The X-Men are needed. Cassidy considers the conversation over at this point.

"Duty calls." he says, and heads toward the locker room, followed by the Blackbird.

The young boy they've been sent to find is only eleven, but he's already hurt so many people, including his best friend. James Donson didn't know he was a mutant, or that he could absorb the oxygen from a room, suffocating everyone inside except himself, like he'd done to his classmates. He was terrified of being near people and all he wanted to do was find a place where he couldn't hurt anyone again.

Cassidy and Mina find him less than an hour after they arrive in Wilmington, South Carolina.

When they find James, he reiterates his desire to be left alone. Mina tries to talk him down, but it only upsets him more. He screams at them that they don't understand what it's like and how he hurts people no matter what he does.

"I know what that's like, James. It...happened to me, too. But you have to understand that those people you hurt...they're going to get better. They don't hate you for what you did because you didn't do it on purpose. You were scared because you're going through a lot of changes, man. No one will hold that against you, James. They'll forgive you." he says.

"But there's a place for people like and me, people who can't control what they can do. You can come and learn how from the people who helped me. Everyone there is a mutant, just like us, man." Cassidy says, hoping that he's not freaking this poor kid out.

James eventually agrees to return to the school with them, sticking close to Cassidy and Mina the whole time. He likes being around the two of them, which forces them to spend more time together trying to help him.

One evening, two months later, Cassidy sits out on a bench on the lawn, looking up at the sky.

"You're really good with James, Cassidy." Mina says, once again appearing almost from nowhere.

"He's a good kid. He just had a bad run of luck. He'll get better." Cassidy says, still looking up at the sky.

"You'll believe the best about a complete stranger, but not about yourself. What is it with you?" she asks, moving around the bench to look him in the eyes.

"I'm pretty sure he wasn't made by a madman to be used against his family."

"What was Jake doing the day he died?" she asks.

Cassidy looks at her as if she just slapped him. Why would she bring that up? He's not going to have any part of it.

"This conversation is over." Cassidy says, getting up to leave again. This time, Mina reaches out and grabs his arm.

"No. I'm tired of you walking away from me, avoiding me and treating me like I don't exist just because it's hard for /you/." Mina yells.

"Jake told me that you were the loneliest person he'd ever seen, which was saying something coming from him. He died trying to be your friend and how do you repay him? You avoid everyone who cares about you and then tell him and God that you're 'trying to be a better man'!

Tina was your friend until you stopped talking to her. Ana and Rachel tried to bond with you as family and you pushed them both away. You barely speak to your mother and father and you treat Uncle Scott like he's your boss!

You avoid Andrew's calls and you let Izzy leave rather than ask her to stay." she asks.

"I would give /anything/ to spend another minute with my brother. You have one and you don't even /care/!"

Cassidy simply glares at her, trying to keep his anger in check. The last thing he needed was to hurt someone, even Mina, by losing control of his power.

"You don't know anything about me, Mina, so keep your opinions to yourself." Cassidy says through gritted teeth.

"I know you're the most ungrateful person I've ever met." she says. This time, it's her turn to walk away.

The following morning, Cassidy Summers packs his things and leaves Xavier's.

Cassidy is gone for six months.

In that time, he goes to Ireland to see his mother and grandfather, to Genosha to visit his father and step-mother and he makes it to the Embassy to see his older brother and Giovanna. He also makes up with and apologizes to Tina for the way he treated her.

He goes to visit Izzy in Kentucky and apologize for not appreciating how much she was there for him when they were together.

The entire time, he feels that something is left undone, unsaid, and though he knows what he needs to do, he fears taking that step. He returns to Fargo, Georgia and walks the streets of the rebuilt city, now a bustling town home to over ten-thousand people.

The town's motto: "If we can rebuild, so can you."

Cassidy stares at that sign for hours, feeling the weight of the last two years slowly but surely lift from his shoulders. When he returns to Xavier's he makes a stop at Jake's grave and makes a very solemn vow to the person who'd died trying to save him from the man he'd become.

He also makes up with his cousins and Uncle Scott, before going to see the last person on his list. He knocks on Mina's door and waits.

The moment she answers, she starts apologizing for what she said the day before he left. Rather than let her speak, he simply kisses her.

When he pulls back she just stares at him. Did he gamble wrong? Was he way out of line for what he'd just done?

Possibly.

But when Mina kissed him back, Cassidy knew he'd found the missing piece of the puzzle and the answer to his life.

(Several years later)

Cassidy Summers is not a perfect man, but each day he does his best to be worthy of Mina's love and forgiveness. They were married seven years ago and their son, Jacob Kurt Alexander Summers came the following summer.

The dark-haired, blue-skinned boy had ten fingers and ten toes, but he also had yellow eyes and mischievous streak ten miles wide. Mina and Cassidy still debate on where he got it from, though it doesn't matter: both sides of Jake's family spoil him rotten, including his "Uncle" James.

Today, the little family stands at the grave of Little Jake's namesake, looking down at the person who'd reached across the years to bring them together.

"I promised him I'd take care of you the day I came back to Xavier's." Cassidy tells his wife, kissing her on the cheek.

"Funny. I promised him I'd wait one more month and go find you if you didn't come back. Then I'd take care of you for the rest of your life." Mina tells him, holding Little Jake in her arms.

"To err is human, to forgive divine." Cassiday says, repeating the old maxim.

He knew he was human, finally, but standing next to his wife and son was the closest to heaven he'd ever felt.

"Karen, maybe you and your cops should wait outside and let me handle this guy. There's gonna be a lot of mystic energy flying around and I don't want you or anyone else to get hit by accident." Matt says, loading up his old-school six shooter as Karen checked her Glock and the rest of her riot gear.

"Walker, if this is your latest attempt at trying to protect because I'm a woman, save it. Try it again and I'll throw in a cell for obstruction of justice." she says, looking up, up, up at him. The two of them were as different as night and day. She was a short, blond woman and he was very tall, dark haired man with a fetish for dusters, jeans and boots.

She was still thinking about buying him the hat for his birthday, though she knew he'd hate it. They'd had this discussion before.

"Karen, I'm just saying this vampire could tear people apart with his bare hands, the way he did with Donovan. I'm really putting on the boots on this one." Matt says, trying to impress on Karen the seriousness of the situation.

Karen's expression stiffens at the mention of David Donovan, her former partner on the NYPD Special Investigations Unit. The vampire they were hunting tonight murdered her partner because it knew she was hunting. She'd looked in the phone book for anyone she thought might be able to help her during her first case and came across a man who actually advertised himself as a "Wizard". He was the only listing in the phone book.

As it turned out, he was also damn good at what he did, though most people refused to believe it.

Matt showed Karen as much as he could about what lay in the darkness without getting her into trouble. When one got past the gruff exterior, Karen Lynch was a beautiful woman who'd been screwed over by a lot of men in her life.

"Okay, Walker, then here's the plan. I'll back your play until it looks like. Now if you're done being a chauvinist, can we go?" she asks.

"All right." Matt says, going to the door and opening it for her.

"After you." he grins cheekily. She hates that, the door-holding, and he knows that.

That's why he does it.

---

"I swear, Walker, if you die on me, I'll kill you." Lynch says, watching as the doctors work to save his life.

The vampire was dead, though he'd managed to tear a hole in Matt's throat when he risked himself to save her. Hours later, he's resting in his bed, in serious but stable condition.

She sits by his bedside as often as possible and is the first person there a few days later when he wakes up. He's glad to see her, as always, but the news she delivers isn't pleasant.

"I'm being reassigned, Matt. Between budget cuts and everything that's happened since they created our division...I'm being sent to Chicago. I leave at the end of the week." she says.

"Oh." is all he manages before he drifts off again.

She drives him home when she's released and he takes her to the airport later that day. Things are awkward between them as they both don't know what to say to each other. Or, rather, they /do/ but neither of them want to be the first person to say it.

Karen Lynch leaves for Chicago that night and all Matt Walker can think about is how much less he suddenly likes New York.

Six months later, Matt Walker is on the trail of a Cult looking to start the Apocalypse. The trail of his killer led to Chicago, where Matt spent over a week trying to narrow down where they were located.

Rather than go this alone, Matt tracked down Karen and called her to ask for help. The two of them spend three more days working out the location of the cultists and finally figure out that they're hiding on the South Side.

Lynch brings in a S.W.A.T team and Matt calls in a few contacts he's made over the last few months. By the time it's over, there's a very dead demon, several dead cultists and a lot of very safe people. Karen receives a promotion for stopping the Cult's activities.

Matt and his teammates, calling themselves the Midnight Sons, set up shop in Chicago and see to making the city safe from supernatural threats.

Karen and Matt work together closely, often spending many late nights together. Neither of them are yet willing to admit how they feel about each other, but they are definitely willing to show it. Repeatedly.

Eventually, Matt begins working on a ritual to destroy every vampire left in the world. He keeps this secret from Karen because he knows that she'll try to stop him if she finds out what it will entail for Matt to destroy the one vampire he truly wants to kill. He works with Marlow, Shelly Drumm, and Michelle Clarke to put together this ideas on the plan.

One evening, Karen confronts him on his secrecy.

"Walker, I know we agreed to no strings and no entanglements, but we also agreed on honesty. You're keeping something from me and I want to know what it is right now." she demands.

"Karen, for your safety I can't--"

"You're /really/ going to play that 'I'm only trying to protect you' card after /everything/ we've been through? I want the truth, Walker, or we're done." Karen says.

Matt sighs and tells Karen almost the whole plan, leaving out only the depth of what he has to do in order to destroy every vampire on Earth. Karen dislikes the plan, but the moment he finishes, she says exactly what he expected her to.

"I want in."

Of course, Matt has no choice to agree, telling her that he plans to start in three days. He and Karen make up, but as he leaves her house that evening, he makes a phone call.

"Get everyone together. We're moving up time table. Meet at Demonreach tomorrow night." he tells Dawn.

---

"Walker, you son of a bitch!" Karen yells, tears filling her eyes the following evening as she reads the note on Whisper's collar as the hellhound sits next to her quietly.

She should have known Matt would lock her out of this if he could. He'd told her she could help, then changed his timetable so that she'd be working when the call came from the morgue.

He'd used the curse he always told her about, the one that would kill him if he ever tried it. She didn't find it a coincidence that there were world-wide reports of strife in the wake of the spell.

Marlow, Dawn and Shelly explained it to her later on. Matt brought every vampire on Earth back to life, then let time and entropy wipe them out. The way they told it, it sounded as if he'd been planning this for years, but the way the planets lined up this year made it possible for him to get every vampire on Earth. Michelle got her life back as a regular human, but any vamp over 100 came back to life long enough to realize it was biting the dust permanently. The plan was genius and so utterly Walker that Karen couldn't help but laugh, even with the tears.

She could almost hear him making up some corny line about how he told her so.

Three weeks later, the morning sickness started. Both Dr. Dr. Strange and Ian McNee, Matt's mentor, took it upon himself to keep watch over Karen and the baby despite her protests. The rest of the Midnight Sons also watched out for her, per Matt's last request. It upset her that he'd planned this out so well, but secretly, she was grateful, because she wasn't sure she could have done it alone.

Donovan Matthew Walker is born nine months later, healthy and whole, and Karen promises she'll be the best mother ever.

She also promises to tell him about his daddy every day so that neither of them forget.

(27 Years Later)

Karen presents her newest detective with his badge, a bright smile upon her face. This detective personally requested his promotion be done by the Chief of Police. Matt Lynch is an amazing detective, possessed of his mother's attention to detail and procedure, as well as his father's ability to adapt to a situation on the fly.

Balancing his mysticism with his dedication to justice is an every day struggle, but Matt handles it with a quick wit and sharp tongue.

"Thanks, Mom." he whispers, looking down at her. He also inherited his father's height, which is a source amusement and consternation for Karen. She almost needed a step stool to reach him.

"You're welcome, honey. Your dad would be proud of you." Karen whispers.

"I...might see him tomorrow night, Mom. It's our birthday after all. Do you want to come?" Matt asks.

"Only you and your dad would drag me out on Halloween for a ghost story." she chuckles, rolling her eyes.

"Yes, I'll go." she says.

She can hardly wait.
