Regular Checkups
Walking into the radiation chamber room, Lena gives a brief wave to the lab techs setting up. She'll shoo them away once it all gets started, but she'll let them do the more technical parts of the set up. The dials and such that come after she can handle.

She smiles over at Agent Childress and puts down some files. "Hey Aleks, how's it been?"

He's already settled in at one of the tables, shirtless, with a band around his arm monitoring his current rad levels.

"Lena, good to see you. Its... been quiet. Which is good and bad."

She sits across from him and glances at the monitors. Nothing unusual for him, but then again in their line of work that was always a good thing. Things going as expected.

"You too. And I know what you mean, there's that calm before the storm feeling isn't there? All you can do really is occupy yourself at the moment. I've got my million side projects, what have you been up to?" She flips through some pages nearby as she talks but makes sure to look up and shoot him a smile so he knows he's got her attention. Besides, technically these checkups also fueled a few of her side projects.

He nods pleasantly, letting her check her various tests before he risks distracting her too much.

"The director has that feeling, anyway. I haven't been able to get wheels to ground for a bit... so I'm mostly doing a lot of reading, a little bit of chess when I can find someone who plays, and a lot of waiting."

"I'd take you on as a helping hand in the lab but...Fury's insistence on classified stuff, your radiation and the fact that I'd yap your ear off about nerdy bio things votes against that. But I'd be up for some rounds of chess and some psych talk when it's slow."

She puts the papers to the side and waits while the lab techs unhook him and prepares for the chamber. "And you've got too much time on your hands sometimes. I'll have to throw things at you to occupy you with. If you have trouble sleeping I've got some science papers I can lend you. Does the trick for most people."

"Not a problem, I have a couple of Russian novels that fit the bill nicely enough. Do feel free to yap away though, I've been doing my best to catch up on your latest papers of bio-nerdery. I might not end up too far behind this time. Care for dinner and chess next time you have a few hours?"

"Well I've been trying to throw the more understandable ones at you. Sadly I'm sitting on enough material and results that I'm not allowed to publish that, if allowed, I could start my own journal and fill it with only my stuff for a good while. Well, that's the price you get for working at SHIELD isn't it?"

The chamber opens and she playfully whacks him with the clipboard. "Get inside you gamma factory."

"As for dinner and chess, I'd love to on the next slow evening. I rarely make it home early enough for dinner usually anyway. This might be a nice change." She starts on adjusting the settings and parameters while the lab techs finish closing the chamber and setting up the connection.

"So now that I've got you trapped like the mad scientist I am, have I ever told you that you could fuel the research for entire labs on your own? I don't mean energy wise."

"Biology is not my strongest point... but so far, I've done alright. But yes... given that most of your work is classified, pretty sure they won't let you publish any time too soon."

He settles in comfortably, grinning back at the comment. "Given that my parents both ended up lab rats in their own fashions, in entirely different projects? I'd hope I had something to offer the mad science community."

As the machine starts whirring away and begins, she pulls up her chair and sits back, crossing her legs. This was the slow part of it. Although now she could dismiss the lab techs at least and spend the next few hours in good company. It could get too quiet in a lab by oneself.

"I'll make it my mission to make you bio literate. But shame about the publishing, I've got some stuff on mutant genetics and the effects of gamma that'd really set people on their heads." She pulls out a pen and some paper and looks like she's taking notes. Truth is, she doodles when free.

"Now I wouldn't be a good mad scientist really. Too interested in figuring out how things work to set them on people. The mad scientists in movies are never scientists you know. They're engineers. I mean, nobody has mad papers or theories that threaten the world in movies. It's a death ray, and it's the engineers who build stuff. We just provide the basis. Means we keep our hands clean," she says and throws him an impish smile almost.

"As far as the effects of gamma radiation - we have a common field of study. Its the more basic biology, and parts of the field that don't involve irradiating it where you'll have to catch me up."
Eventually he'd probably sleep here. But the company is too good, and thanks to his enhanced physiology, he really does need to spend a lot more time in the chamber than he really needs to spend sleeping.
"And that's all alright. I'm tired of death rays."

"Don't worry I've got loads on that since joining SHIELD. Of course I'd never have been able to get my hands on enough samples without that to even start on some of those projects. I can't give you any papers but I'll throw some of the stuff at you in more layman's terms if you'd like."

She expects he might nod off eventually, and she's prepared for that. "You might need to worry about mutant animals around me though," she jokes. "And feel free to sleep whenever, I've got enough to occupy me." She indicates the stack of papers she brought with her. Lots of reading to do really, but nothing urgent. And tissue samples came later anyway.

Continuing her doodling she absent-mindedly looks at the monitors again and then continues. "So if you were a mad scientist what would you do?"

"I have the company of a highly intelligent, beautiful young woman - or rather, she has me as a captive audience and isn't fleeing. I'm quite content with remaining awake, thanks."

A few moments' pause for consideration. "Well, for starters, so I at least sounded like a mad scientist, go back speaking a lot of Russian, til I recovered the accent. After that... well... since metapsychology madness would just result in mad theory papers..., and mad cryptology or linguistics... just sounds odd, probably some type of attempting to reverse engineer the power broker process, or field testing some of the most controversial gamma studies.

"Like I always say, Flatterer," she smiles at him. "And sadly they've blocked off my exits and I'm stuck here with you. Woe is me."

"I like the accent idea, very nice. Mad linguistics could be an interesting niche though, and the cryptology would be even more insane I'd have to say but not too sciency. Hmm...I like the field testing idea and might sign onto this. Then when I have enough data I'll debate running while I can unless you make a good offer to prevent it. This might lead to the creation of an army of gamma subjects which would preferably take over certain areas which you can then claim as your own country. On my benefits package I want an extensive lab built into a house," she continues casually while doodling as if this was a discussion about the weather then smirks up at him to gauge his reaction.

In turn, he carries on as if this was the most normal conversation in the world to be having, or at least worthwhile scientific discourse.

"Well of course. Our army of gamma subjects would need proper scientific support. And we'd need to make your lab, and the facility suitably durable for the inevitable point they turn against us. Now the question, of course, is would you be taking on the standard 'evil is sexy' wardrobe upgrades option?"

"But would this upgrade allow me to keep my lab coat? That's an important point I'll have you know. Leather and white lab coats don't go well together. But I will add in the mad scientist goggles free of charge. As for the subjects turning on us, we'll need to install a failsafe. We don't want to go down like all those mad scientists in the media. Let's be smart about our world domination," she carries on casually, finishing up a doodle. "Would you be investing in an evil wardrobe of your own?"

"Hmm, what do you think would look good, aside from the necessary lab coat? As for you... well yes. There are options aside from black leather, common as that is. We can experiment... what else is being a mad scientist good for, if not rampant experimentation?"

"Good point. Well if you want the classics then evil looking facial hair, a good ton of gel and some random death ray sort of devices are always good. And have a colour scheme. That green is a good start I'll admit. Maybe work it into the decor. I'll take my goggles and lab coat, maybe blow up a few things to give a good impression. I hear wanton destruction is a must."

"I tend to approve of wanton, destruction optional." he replies with a smirk. "Since my field is radiobiology, the death ray will probably be some type of radiation emitter. As for the green... well, not really optional. Dye just burns out."

"See? There's a plan already. We've got a colour schemes, minions planned and our death ray of choice. Now all we need are the lab coats and we're in business," she chuckles as she reaches over to push to button that caused the tissue samples to start. Really it was only a quick shallow stab by a few mechanically controlled prongs in the leg and arm but she found it was best to distract people during it or they dodged on instinct.

"Needles come after I'm afraid," she shrugs with a sympathetic smile.
