Fluff meme- Cheering up
Lena sat at her desk, rubbing her face to try and keep calm and not lose it. One of her side projects had just fallen through because some lab tech had prepared the injections they'd been using with the solution with the wrong concentration. Months of work and research down the drain because of some incompetent...Months! On top of that now she had to tell Fury that they'd have to restart for stupid technical reasons.

She looks over at the coffee machine and remembers it broke down today (she went through so many), oh fuck it all, couldn't things go right for once? Another headdesk and she just gives up and stays there with her head against her desk, letting the frustration wash away and replace itself with the feeling of helplessness. She'd lost all that time for someone's amateur mistake. Why hadn't she triple checked? Well because they were usually reliable. This was what happened when new people came in.

Worst day in a while.

Josh had just got back from lecturing a guy in intelligence who got Crossfire mixed up with Iron Cross when he came upon the scene, halting abruptly.

"Lena? You okay?"

His question doesn't register right away but when it does she responds form her headdesk position, "Hey Josh. The coffee machine broke down again." Although that's clearly not what's wrong.

"I'll get somebody on it," he says, pulling up a chair. He doesn't buy that that was the was problem. Well..maybe not the whole problem, Lena did not love her coffee. "Here," he offers his own cup.

"It always breaks," she mumbles as she sits up to rest her head in hands and look down at her papers, defeated. "Thanks Josh." She takes a sip, hoping it'll cheer her up, all while frowning at the mass of files on her desk.

"Extortion scheme of the manufacturing company," he deadpanned. "No problem. So, you wanna tell me what's really bothering you?"

"Always perfectly timed to happen after the warranty is over," she deadpans back, although her heart isn't really into it. "Idiots. Months wasted. And telling Fury. Yipee." Perhaps not the most detailed but it happened everywhere, not just in the lab.

He sighs, knowing how that is. "New assistants?"

"I wish. Then I could chew them out for it or have at least some control over this stuff. New assistants for the lab techs. They help with the setting up of experiments, making batches of different concentrations for different solutions, and so on. In this case someone seemed to think that we wanted a lower concentration that does almost nothing. All because they couldn't read their own damn handwriting."

"So whoosh there goes months. And now I need to tell Fury why I've set the assistants I've got that actually do work, on a project who's last few months of results can now be used to refill the toilet paper supply, they're that useless."

"Shoot me now."

Josh winced. He didn't understand all the technical jargon, but he knew what it was like to be sabotaged by outside forces.

"Not going to lie, when you changed my ringtone I thought about it," he teased, trying to keep a straight face.

"I changed it back," she huffed. "But go ahead, Fury can't make injured or dead bodies squirm as well," Lena sighs and rests her head against Josh's shoulder while looking quite dejected.

"I think you'd be surprised what Fury could do." He stiffens a little in surprise when she leans on him. He looks around for a moment, no one looking, before slowly wrapping an arm around her. "Sorry this happened to you."

"Then make it a clean shot. I've seen you at the shooting range, you can do it." The arm is welcome and she leans into him a bit more. "Nothing for you to be sorry about. You didn't do anything but bring coffee. Which is always very appreciated."

"Not sure I should. You do good work here, Dr. Jessen," he said sincerely. He smiled. "It always boils down to coffee."

"Wuss," she mumbles but doesn't really mean it. "And what have we said about this 'Dr. Jessen' stuff?" She sighed, she'd let Josh get away with the 'Doctor' shots, she really didn't mind them. They were often fun, especially since he didn't enjoy 'Agent' much either. "Yes. It does. I think my coffee machine knows when I need it most and then picks that time to throw a tantrum."

He chuckles a little. "Sorry, Lena. I wouldn't joke about machine conspiracies, there are enough horror stories about that sort of thing on record. Taking over the coffee is end-of-the-world level stuff."

"If someone even attempted that I hope you would actually make some clean shots. Taking over coffee is a giant No," she finally smiled.
