Hero's Journey
A college professor and expert in world mythologies especially the tales of epic heroes. However his family is killed in a super-villain attack and he blames the worlds superheroes for not being better heroes and saving his family. He abandons his job and travels to the far reaches of the global looking for understanding in the places of myth and legend he always read about.
He came back a changed man who decided if the heroes were not the heroes they could be than he work make them better whether they liked it or not especially these younger newer generation of heroes.
Most likely a Justice League or Young Justice plot where he sets up trials, tests, and lessons to try and force the heroes to become better in his eyes. He will carefully study them in-depth looking for something that needs fixing like a tragic flaw or a life lesson never learned.
