Helicarrier Breakroom
Agent Power was worried. Fury hadn't specified how long she'd be taking off for her injuries.

... and now they were all out of the good coffee.

Jack growled.

Aleks to the rescue. He generally lives a spartan lifestyle, which makes some room for the things where he takes quality seriously. His car, of course, is the legendary one. It gets nothing but the best of everything. Alcohol is #2 - he doesn't always drink beer, but when he does, he insists on upper end European. American anything just doesn't cut it. And then there's coffee. He keeps his own stock, for just such emergencies. Besides, with the gamma-inspired issues, risking burnt coffee or utter garbage in random mornings is just not a good idea.

He pops the French roast into the machine. "Want some?"

"You are a gentleman and a scholar," Jack says with relief. "Yes, thanks."

"Correct on the second. On the first, I'd like to know who you've been listening to. You doing alright?"

Jack chuckles. "Doing fine, mostly. Wondering when Fury the Younger's going to be back. Nobody seems to know."

"Furys have this way about them. She'll be back when she's good and ready, and not a moment before - but she'll be back, pretty much whatever happens. Just keep the faith and do your job, or she'll have your ass when she gets back."

Jack grins. "Definitely no arguing that part. How are things on your end?"

Jack nods. "We're about due. I swear, though, if it's aliens next? First person who makes pony jokes in the briefing isn't walking out of it."

"Yep, got to rotate the wheels on the org chart every now and then. As for the jokers, don't mind 'em. We only have so many metas. Trying to keep up with all the aliens and superweapons with guns - they're just jealous."

He fetches the coffee, pouring two cups and settling in again. "Besides, it can't be aliens next - its the science terrorists with a new superweapon's turn."

"Thank you." Jack drank his coffee and sighed. "Good point, but it's not just my dignity. It's a bad plan in general for people to get dismissive about a a species that could literally break their minds on accident." Another grin. "Yes, right. At least they don't make us chase after the Nazi Bees."

"There's two kinds of people in that room. The people who don't know what they're talking about, shooting off their mouths - and those kind of people rarely make it anywhere important in this business. Then there's the people who take it all deadly seriously, and crack jokes to stay sane.

You ever heard murder scene techs? Black humor jokes about the dead, their families, their method of death left and right. Its not that they don't take what they do serious - its that they need something to stay sane. Everyone who matters knows what a lot of these aliens can do. They're ludicrously ahead of us in tech level, energy resources, armament - and these people get to stand in front of it with a raygun, a communicator, and some kind of relentless optimism. The jokes about cosmic dwarf-horses bearing super powers aren't mean-spirited... they're a godsend to the psych department."

Another sip. "And why I insist on good coffee."

He listens. Put that way, Jack knows he's done it occasionally himself, just from different angles. "All right, very good point. Guess it's easy to get picky when I'm that used to the subject."

"Between having a father who, at times, is the psychology department, and really, truly stellar anger management problems, I've picked some things up. People will talk - all I can say is, one, don't sweat it, and two, enjoy the coffee."
