Moses Dodderidge: bad ass (and prophet) ([info]mosesknows) wrote in [info]valesco,

Who: Momo and D :]
Where: The Leaky, duhhhh
When: Monday morning
What: Sibling love, what else?

Moses sat at the bar of the Leaky, drinking a cup of coffee and thinking about the events of the past few weeks. He was back home for a while, something he sorely enjoyed. It was frustrating to be off the case in Mexico, there was no doubt, but he was secretly tickled pink about all the newly found free time to spend with his siblings and with Harmony. There was lots of extra free time with her--Merlin, he loved that. There'd been a brief period of time where he thought things between them would die down, fizzle out, all because of his line of work. But they'd made it through it. And now--well, he had plenty of time at home now, didn't he? He made a mental note to send something to Harmony later in the day and to take her to dinner later on in the week.

He feebly scratched at his knee, wincing a bit at the pain from it. He'd got caught up in a nasty trap and the healers still weren't too sure what to do about it. He could use his leg just fine, no problem, but it bloody hurt when he walked on it and you could still see the black charring on it--at least, if he wore short legged trousers you could. There was no point in showing off the battle scar around mum and Miranda; the two of them would worry sick if they knew just how bad it was. He smiled a bit when he heard a familiar trampling down the stairs. She'd never learned to properly walk down stairs, in a quiet and normal fashion had she?

"I've said it before, Mir, but if you continue to fly down the stairs like that all the guests will think we've got a cockatrice loose," he said with a smirk before taking another large gulp of coffee.

"Has the post come yet!" she whispered loudly (there was definitely a way to do that, of course), sliding up and onto the stool beside Moses. Miranda rapped her fingers on the bar counter, eyes eagerly watching the window where the post owls normally swooped in from. Of course, there would be a ton of them coming in as it wasn't as if she was the only person in the inn that was expecting mail, but in her mind, the big package that her N.E.W.T.s results would be in would be first and the brightest and basically just shout MIRANDA DODDERIDGE HERE ARE YOUR GRADES!

She did know that it had only been a week since she'd finished them, and that the results didn't normally come until July, but honestly? She was really excited to get her grades, even if she didn't pass every test. Getting her N.E.W.T.s meant she could have a real, some sort of idea of what she was going to do with the rest of her life. Because right now? She had little to nothing planned. McGonagall basically hated her, really, because Miranda could never give her one thing she wanted to do besides act or be in theater somehow, but seriously? Unless you're super lucky, no one gets that big break right out of school, and with the war going on, no one was really flocking to the theaters and...

"They said like---from the end of school until the beginning of July, we should expect them, that's a long time!" she moaned to her brother, dropping her chin down onto her folded hands on the counter.

Moses laughed, wrapping his arm around her for a loose hug. She was so bright eyed about getting her scores back, it reminded him of waiting for N.E.W.T.s results himself. "Well, there was an owl earlier that left a note saying you got straight Ts, but I gave him a mean glare and he flew off," he replied jokingly. "Other than that one, I can't say there's been any mail this morning."

He stood up from his stool and walked around to the other side of the counter, only the slightest of limps present in his walk. "You look like you could use a pick me up," he said casually as he rustled up a few ingredients here and there. "Maybe a hot cocoa? I remember we used to drink this stuff all the time." He smiled at the memory; it was probably too hot for it, being summer and all, but sometimes a familiar comfort food was good to have. Especially while waiting for something as important as test results.

"That's not too long of a time. Only two or so weeks. Look at it this way, at least you don't have to wait until August or September!" That would be far worse than any punishment you could imagine, forcing a freshly finished Hogwarts student to wait that long without knowing if they're truly done with school and out in the real world.

Miranda watched her brother move around without lifting her chin, face in a great pout. It didn't take much for her to realize how she tended to revert to the helpless little sister when she was home, but she really didn't mind it. Not much, anyway. Well---okay, there were a lot of days when she wanted to be treated like an adult (which she was, and had been for almost a year now) and totally didn't get the respect, but then there were lazy days like this that she didn't mind being babied.

Mostly when it involved hot cocoa. Because seriously, who could ever resist that?

"I don't even know what to do with them," she let out with a sigh, shifting up a bit as the cup was slid in front of her. Miranda tested the heat of the cup carefully with the side of her hands, but was glad that Tom had been keeping up with the cooling spells like he'd promised (after she'd burnt basically both her palms last winter, ergh--not really his fault, but). "I just want to know, you know?"

Moses got a cup ready for himself, pouring in with the remaining coffee he already had. "Hmmm, you don't know what you want to do, D?" He said curiously, now moving back around to the other side of the counter. He smiled at her as he sat down. "Nothing at all? You could do almost anything. Working in the ministry, being an auror, or maybe a healer!" He almost suggested becoming a curse breaker, but...maybe it was being overprotective, but he didn't want to see her get hurt. It was too dangerous for him to allow it. "You could be a teacher..." Maybe the ideas would be helpful for her, giving her some ideas that she hadn't thought of before.

"That's not funny, Moses," Miranda said with a great twist of her lips. Her, be an auror? Or a healer? Ha! He knew how her grades were, he knew that she couldn't focus on something like that for more than ten minutes, "And anyway, you had to apply like, months ago for those, so."

A teacher wasn't so bad though. Except she didn't really like little kids, and she could definitely not be a professor at Hogwarts. Unless they started a theater class---man, why didn't wizards study stuff like that, huh? They focused on all these theories and doing magic (which made sense, but she's trying to make a point--), but what about all those people who don't end up using magic during every aspect of their lives?!

Sigh.

"Maybe I'll just take over this place," she said, though her eyes were focused on her cup, and they widened to a frightened state at the thought. She really didn't want to run the Leaky Cauldron, no matter how much her parents were egging at least one of their kids to. Jamie and Miranda seemed to be the last hope for it, though, uggh---

Her hair whipped into her face as the first of the post owls began to swoop in, and her head shot up in surprise. "The post!!"

"I wasn't trying to be funny, D!" he said, holding back a laugh at the expression on her face. He really did think she was capable of anything, if she tried. "I think mum would die of shock and joy if you told her you were thinking of taking over here," he said with a grin, knowing that she wasn't actually serious about wanting to take over.

"Ooh, the post!" he said excitedly as he began untying letters from legs. There were a few letters for residents but then--ohhhh, this had some promise to it!

"Looook at what I found, Mirrrraaaandaaaaa!" He said, now waving the light blue envelope in front of her. The return address was to Appleby. Ha!

Uh oh.

Miranda watched the letter move in Moses hand with keen interest, but not because of what it was (she knew what it was) but because she wanted to see if her brother would have the decency to let her open the letter in the privacy of her room. Which she knew he wouldn't, because of the big deal she had just been making out of getting a job just now (stupid---coincidence or whatever it was).

See---she needed to take the letter, go to her room, open it and cry, and then come back like nothing happened. Which, again, probably wouldn't happen because she was a very bad crier, not matter how good of an actress she was.

And she wasn't heartbroken about her decision not to tryout (Miranda supposed she should have responded to the first letter, telling them she was declining the offer), it was just thinking about the surrounding circumstances that made her upset. Like---her and Ralph should be able to do whatever they wanted or could and--ugh.

"What's that?" she croaked, her back stick straight and eyes wide.

"It's a bloody letter, Mir. What do you think it was?" he said with a chortle, now handing the letter to her. He watched her carefully; this wasn't the reaction a freshly graduated bird was supposed to have at a job offer. Not only that, a good job offer. She'd be out in the lime light (something Moses knew for a fact that she ate up like cauldron cakes), she'd get to play Quidditch. Moses would have KILLED for that letter fresh out of school. Bloody hell, why was she--he furrowed his brow, now watching her carefully.

"Well, go on then. Open it up," he said expectantly, waiting for her to tear open the envelope and read it aloud. It was only proper in the Dodderidge family to share your good news, right?

Miranda felt herself getting hot as she slowly opened the envelope, mouth twisting greatly as she tried to calm her breaths. Oh, hell. She really just wanted to ignore all of this, she hadn't even told Ralph, and she told him everything! So--this was a big, freaking deal and it was just so frustrating!

"Dear Ms. Dodderidge," she started reading after she unfolded the letter, "We would like to extend an--an---open---trial invi-vitation on--on Friday--I have to go to the bathroom!" Miranda's lips pulled back far as she forced herself not to cry and she rushed off the stool and down the hallway, apologizing to the warlock who'd just come out of the lounge area.

Of course the bathroom door was locked for repair (stupid---hags, this one stuffed up the toilets thinking they were a new brand of cauldrons). She flopped unceremoniously outside the door, folding the letter closed and only to open it again and then close it again.

Stuttering words weren't good, Moses knew that. His brow furrowed as he watched her read the letter and then she shot off like a bullet. Bloody hell, this shouldn't be something to upset her! This was the sort of letter that changed your life, not...he sighed as he pushed himself up from the stool. He was babying her, he knew, but she'd appreciate it in the long run. He needed to know that she was okay and that this was just--well, that she was nervous about the tryouts, or her--well, her just being a stupid bird.

He limped around the corner, walking down the somewhat narrow corridor to find her flung on the floor. He carefully let himself slide down the wall, sitting opposite her, back leaning on the exterior wall of the hallway. "You don't have to read it, D. I just...I'm worried about you. That's not a normal reaction to a letter. A good letter, mind you." He paused, shaking his head. "Never mind, you don't even have to tell me what's wrong if you don't want. But you know you can tell me about anything, right?" If it was that bloody Ralph again, he'd be getting a call from Moses and there would be fisticuffs involved. Miranda didn't deserve to be hurt like this.

She stared at her brother as he spoke, shoulders going up and down as she attempted to control her breaths. Miranda wanted to tell Moses everything, she wanted to tell him that Ralph's family was a target of death eaters, she wanted to tell him that they had decided to stick through it together. It didn't bother her, she'd known about the Arrows' invitation for weeks now, but when she was reminded like this...

"I can't take the invite," she said hoarsely, managing to hold back her tears. Miranda looked down at the letter in her hands and slumped further back against the wall, "And--I'm okay with that, honest, I just---get flustered and---"

She pursed her lips, trying to find a good way to explain this without getting her brother too worried, because then the questions would start and she wouldn't be able to keep everything from him for long. "But---it's for personal reasons."

Personal reasons? Personal...NO. There was no way that--"MIRANDA DAISY DODDERIDGE, YOU BETTER NOT BE--OHHHH, WHEN THAT FUCKING BOYFRIEND OF YOURS COMES AROUND," He growled angrily. That bastard had--his kid sister was pregnant? Moses refused to believe that Miranda wasn't old enough to kiss boys, let alone shag them and be up the spout. Right. It was settled, Ralph was going to propose to Miranda and marry her. And before that, Moses was going to knock his bloody lights out. The smarmy bastard, who did he think he was, getting his sister--his ONLY sister--pregnant????

"I thought you were smarter than that, Miranda. I thought you'd know that--that you don't give up what you want and your--your future--just because some...just because some bloke can't keep it in his bloody pants!" Moses wasn't angry at Miranda, really. But bloody hell, how had this happened?

Her face contorted into one of mass confusion. What was he screaming about? She better not be---

Miranda's eyes widened and she let out a shriek, jumping to her feet with her hands flailing about, "I'M NOT PREGNANT! OH MY GOD, MOSES!"

She let out another shriek and covered her face with her hands, knowing she was quaffle red and ugh. Okay--just because two of her roommates had gotten pregnant doesn't mean that she had to be stupid and--

"Ralph and I don't even---" oh God, that lie came out so quick, didn't it? Miranda stomped her foot and threw her hands down, still very red in the face. Brothers were really dumb sometimes. "Thanks for assuming, Moses, makes me feel great!"

Oh, like he really wanted to have that conversation with his kid sister. What was he supposed to think, Miss It's-for-personal-reasons, huh??? She was just lucky he hadn't apparated until he found that bloody boyfriend of hers and taught him a thing or two about respecting a girl and--well, no matter. It was a moot point.

Moses sighed, leaning his forehead on the wall Miranda had previously been leaning against. "Sorry, D. I just--assumed the worst." So if she wasn't pregnant, what was the big deal? It couldn't be something horrible could it? "Have you suddenly developed a hatred for your favorite team or something? Or are you protesting the game on account of some teams' chauvinistic ways? I just--you can't just. That's a chance to play professional Quidditch, Miranda. If there's something that's holding you back that much, it can't be good." That was the fact of the matter in Moses' eyes. Something big was up. Something that was beyond his control and he didn't like being unable to play the protective big brother.

Maddox wasn't normally one to drop in on his sibling's conversations... It was very common for Miranda to be yelling about something, and he usually liked to stay out of the arguments that took place between Miranda and Moses. And even though he wasn't sure if they were arguing, she was definitely yelling. And seeing how he had only caught one particular word that almost made him fall down the stairs, he was going to have to investigate.

Running down the rest of the steps he skidded to a halt as he got into the same room, hearing only the last part of Moses' speech since the sound of his footsteps blocked out the rest of his words. ...-it can't be good. "What?!" Maddox said suddenly, his voice a bit more high pitched than normally. He looked over at Miranda with wide eyes, looking very confused and very stunned and just...

"You're pregnant?!"

"It's---I---I can't and---it's none of your---"

Miranda puffed her cheeks greatly, a sight reminiscent of when she used to hold her breath to try and persuade people to give her what she wanted, but she was definitely not attempting that right now (not after the last time when she passed out, haaa). She just couldn't find the words and Miranda quickly let out a frustrated breath, ready to put on the immature teenager and act storm away so that Moses could stew and then a few days later they'd be okay and----

"HOLY SHIT I'M NOT PREGNANT!" she shrieked at Maddox, who had appeared from nowhere. Her voice had gone so shrilly that she was sure the dogs in the neighborhood were going to start howling. "THANK YOU GUYS SO FUCKING MUCH FOR HAVING SO MUCH FAITH IN ME I HATE BOTH OF YOU GOODBYE!"

With a very loud, frustrated squeal of annoyance, she stormed away, quite sure that her brothers were going to follow her and also quite sure that she'd woken up every patron staying at the Leaky and that her parents were going to reprimand her and-----"YOU GUYS ARE SO STUPID!" she shouted over her shoulder.

Moses sighed, now rubbing his hand on his forehead. "Thank you, Maddox. Really." Now that he couldn't hear, he...sigh, he needed to take care of Miranda. She wasn't going to run off on him because she was too upset to just stew and--no, she'd do something stupid. She was a Dodderidge. Something stupid would happen because of this. Grabbing his wand, he apparated himself to the top of the stairs, deciding to wait for her there rather than hobbling after her with his leg. He didn't not have faith in her, it was just--well, the world was crazy now. Girls were getting pregnant all the time and Miranda wasn't a little kid anymore. When he was her age, he'd already shagged a girl so--he didn't want to think about it, but she probably'd done it before. So...it wasn't stupid to think that maybe it had happened. Not stupid at all, he decided. He sat at the top stair, trying to take up as much of the landing as possible so she couldn't just walk past him (definitely banking on her not thinking to apparate around him).

He swallowed roughly as she began to yell at him, looking like someone who had just gotten smacked across the face. Watching her storm past him, he made a vowel noise in his throat, only to get cut off by Moses’ little comment. Eyes narrowed as looked at his younger brother. “Do me a favor and shut up…” He grumbled as he took his pointer finger and twisted it in his ear, which was now ringing due to the shrill pitch of Miranda’s voice. Watching as Moses popped out of the room, he moved over to follow his sister by foot into the other room. “Miranda! Miranda, I’m sorry I only heard bits and pieces of the conversation going on in here, got a very bad combination of words, and just…I don’t know!” He fumbled with his words, his hands flying around to display how flustered he was, even though he was still following after her and she wasn’t looking at him.

She didn't even notice Moses sitting on the steps until she was eye-to-eye with him, and that elicited another shriek, and that made her turn around only to see that Maddox was hot on her trail and oh my God, it was like they were born to drive her crazy!

"I---! You! ARGH!" she let out in frustration, throwing her back against the wall of the stairwell, glad that this one didn't have handrails because that would have hurt. "Fine, okay? I'll---"

Miranda knew she couldn't tell them what was really going on, but she had to give her brothers enough details to get them off her back. Which...would probably be every detail EVER but she had to try.

"I'm not pregnant, first off, let me just clarify that," she said as obnoxiously as possible, sending a pointed look toward both Maddox and Moses, "Secondly, to catch up Maddox, I am not accepting the invitation from the Arrows because of personal reasons. Yes they have to do with Ralph, no it does not involve a baby or an engagement or a marriage."

She looked back and forth her brothers again, trying to see if they were keeping track, "You two are just going to have to trust me when I say it is for the best, and that things will be fine, but it's my decision and I am keeping to it."

Miranda wiggled in place for a moment, arms crossed tightly. Quickly, she stamped her foot down, "So there."

"What on earth could be--you're not the Dodderidge with people trying to--that's not." Moses sighed. "You shouldn't have to change your--" He couldn't even form a full sentence without giving away his own secret. He'd kept it quiet from Maddox, which was a bloody miracle let me tell you. He just--if there were things wrong with. He needed to know what was going, he--he had to protect her, for some reason. Merlin, that's--he had a problem, didn't he?

"Who's to say that whatever this problem you have isn't going to have some sort of adverse effect on the rest of the family, D? Wouldn't it be better to just--just let us know so we can....can help out with whatever the problem is?"
