I know what you're thinking, but darling you're not thinking straight

Sadly, things just happen we can't explain.

Katie C. Bell
T H E • B A S I C S

NAME • Kathryn Coira Bell
NAME MEANING •
Kathryn; A variant form of Catherine and Katherine, both of Greek origin and meaning 'pure'. A very traditional woman's name and the name of several saints and queens, including Catherine the Great, Saint Catherine of Alexandria, and three wives of Henry VIII.
Coira; A name of Scottish origin, meaning "seething pool."
NICKNAMES • Due to the unfortunate circumstance of her having what she calls "a bloody old woman name," you'll probably do best by her to go on calling her Katie--nothing more and nothing less. When she says 'nothing less', she means that literally. Don't even think of uttering a Kate or a Kay, and especially not the dreaded Kay-Kay. Katie would like to think that she got over all that piddle while she was still in primary school.
AGE • 17
BIRTHDATE • 10 May 1979
SEXUALITY • Heterosexual, Taken [Ritchie Coote]
EDUCATION • 13th Year, Hogwarts College
HERITAGE • 1/2 Scottish, 1/2 English
SOCIAL STATUS • The Bells are a family of no particular consequence, the kind that none of the children of prominent families ever heard of until Katie made her way into Hogwarts. While they are of the upper-middle class, did she have any siblings her tuition would be next to impossible for the Bells to fund and her parents struggle at times to keep her in the school, putting up with it so that she can receive the kind of education they want for her.

just put back the car keys
A P P E A R A N C E

HEIGHT • Coming in at 1.6 meters, Katie is of a average height, but still rather shorter than she would have liked to come out. She gets her short stature from her mother, but to be honest always imagined herself a bit taller, what with her father's above average height.
WEIGHT • She weighs 54.43 kilograms, safely in the healthy range for her height, but still making her relatively small. That, coupled with the fact that she's slightly lacking in the, ahem, chest area makes her look a deal smaller than she is--enough that Katie's had her fair share of 'anorexic' gossip spread around the school to deal with in her years at Hogwarts.
BUILD • With all the sports she does, it's no wonder that Katie's got some strong muscles on her, but she's surprisingly not muscular of build. At all. As with the rest of her appearance, her build is generally deceiving and Katie is instead small and thin. She looks almost breakable, which is bad news for people who try and mess with her without knowing the punch she can pack. Those muscles are still hidden under there somewhere.
DRESS STYLE • Dolce & Gabana, Chanel, Oscar--what? Ohhh, you mean those overpriced pieces of fabric and shiny accessories that all of those little rich kids flaunt and treat like God in seams and stitches? Aha, not so much for Katie. Apart from the fact that she really doesn't understand how anyone would be insane enough to pay hundreds for a shirt, there's no way she can afford to shop at all those designer stores. Being that a lot of the population of Hogwarts can does indeed make her personal style look rather... blah in comparison, but as it would turn out, Katie doesn't notice or particularly care. Her wardrobe is full of good clothes--at least by her standards--which are generally more on the sporty and comfortable side. She enjoys babydoll cut t-shirts and denim jeans, shorts, capris--anything but denim skirts. Speaking of which, the only skirt Katie owns she wears to play tennis, and she's quite sure that that doesn't count. Not big on 'girly' or anything in prints, usually her shirts are only one or two solid colors and she definitely doesn't wear anything that's going to show off her (somewhat non-existent) cleavage or that has anything resembling frills or lace.
EYES & HAIR • Long, but not too long to keep out of the way (for football's sake), Katie's blonde hair (a lovely champagne color, her mum's cosmetologist always coos) falls just below her shoulders. Unlike most girls, she doesn't really make it a big deal to do anything with it and thus it usually just stays down straight, or up in a simple ponytail. Most assume that this is because she doesn't care, but the truth is that Katie simply never learned how to dress it up.
As for her eyes, they're her dad's hazel, rather round in shape and smaller than average. She could go off on how they shine with purpose and emotion and all that bogus crap, but that'd be stupid--they're absolutely, positively average and unremarkable eyes that might 'pop' a little more if she knew the first thing about makeup. Tragically, Katie's about as clueless when it comes to that as she is when it comes to her hair. It could be considered a pity, as she'd really upgrade herself from 'nice' to 'quite pretty' if she put some effort into her image, but it's all irrelevant. Katie doesn't see a lot of point in it anyway and you're probably not going to live to see her change her opinion.
AND THE OTHER • Due to a rather young appearance, Katie is absolutely one of those people who you'd never guess is as old as she actually happens to be, and this particular quality of hers tends to be the bane of her existence. Rather than a legal adult, most people assume from her rather youthful appearance that she's only fifteen or sixteen, and thus she gets treated like a child by a lot of strangers and casual acquaintances. It's because of this that she tries to overcompensate with maturity when out in public, but much of the time it just backfires on her as people think it's "cute" that she tries to "act beyond her years".
Characterized by her loud confidence, Katie carries herself very well and generally seems seem like someone who knows what she's doing and what she wants. Her air causes her to come off as approachable, although maybe to some of the shyer types her self-assuredness would seem somewhat intimidating.

or someone's gonna get hurt
P E R S O N A L I T Y

FIRST IMPRESSION • "Oh, doesn't she look fun!" "Oh really? I don't think so at all. She looks rather heathen to me." "Well, I suppose so." "Suppose? Just look at her clothes--you know, dressing up a bit wouldn't kill the girl. And so loud! I'd think her friends would need earplugs to be around her." "But she does look like she enjoys herself..."
OVERALL • The life of the party--a simple phrase that very nicely describes Katie Bell. Her most defining feature is her extrovertedness, her loud and clear thereness that makes her impossible to avoid when she walks into the room. Growing up in a household with two very loud and confident (and opinionated) people has helped her personality develop throughout the years into a fun, but at times rather overwhelming presence--a presence which is very difficult to ignore, which oftentimes causes her friends to love her and her enemies to hate her that much more deeply. That being said however, with such an evident nature anyone can tire of Katie at any given time. She has not been without a certain amount of scrutiny from her friends on occasion due to the way that she tends to not always know when is the right time to stop, simmer down, and be quiet.
Thanks to her father and her closeness with him growing up, Katie's become rather a bit of a tomboy during her years, always opting to play with a football over her collection of Barbie dolls. It seems like she's been playing sports since she was old enough to run--football and tennis being her best--and if she's not careful, she has a tendency to be able to get caught up in them and forget all else. She is a touch more competitive than most, and this leads to her being a bit of a sore loser when her team comes up short, something that she tries hard to keep in check but oftentimes she can do nothing about. Because sports do impact her life and personality so very deeply, it's not uncommon to catch her quite off in the days following a particularly disappointing match and Katie's been known to get downright difficult--bordering snippy--with any peer who dares bring it up with her.
It is a good thing, then, that she doesn't make it a habit of losing. She wasn't drafted to the house football team unnaturally early for no reason, of course, and Katie's quite aware of every speck of talent that she's got in her. This has made her confident, not just in her game but in life as well, affecting the way that she carries herself and her self-assuredness. Katie's got an optimistic mentality about her, sometimes exaggerated, but it all helps her out in the long run. What she can't achieve due to believing in herself, she can get over failing at quickly because she doesn't let it affect the positive light in which she sees herself. Katie's got a good self-image and is pleased with who she is in most all respects, ignoring those that she isn't quite satisfied with rather than driving herself nuts over them. Someone else doesn't believe in her? Some Slytherin thinks she's plain or too loud or unimpressive? What does it matter! She's Katie-fucking-Bell, that's good enough for her, and anyone that's going to call her egotistical for it can bugger off, as far as she's concerned.
However, as can be expected, confidence does have a real downside for her. Because she believes in herself so thoroughly, it's difficult for Katie to accept that she's ever wrong--add this to the hardheadedness that she inherited naturally from her mother and you've got one determined, stubborn, and at times very frustrating girl. Let's not even get into the subject of her hot temper when someone insists upon challenging her. Her short fuse and ability to hold a grudge is legendary and it's for this reason that you simply don't want to start something with Katie. She has an easy way of getting furious, frustrated, and sometimes even downright defensive when come up against and these traits when out like to blind her thinking, making her do things without premeditation. Her rashness gets her in trouble, whether it be doing something risky and getting herself hurt in the process or letting her sharp tongue run away with her--speaking of which; this girl can make a sailor blush when she really gets worked up. Katie's served her fair share of detentions due solely to poor choice of words, although it should be noted that most all the time the only thing that'll get her that far gone has to do with a match, player or two of the opposing team, and some unwisely placed commentary.
If you can handle all that out of Katie long enough to become her close friend, it's more than likely that you'll never regret it. She's loyal almost to a fault and loves and cares for the people close to her--she does a good job of cherishing and appreciating what she has and anyone who is powerful a personality enough to keep up with her (or simply patient enough to tolerate her sometimes). Katie's the last person that you'll find gossiping or backstabbing and makes it a point of letting people who do know that she doesn't find it respectful in the least. Don't dare whisper an unsavory word about one of her loved ones, either, or you're more than likely going to get a fist in your face before you even know what happened. She's not afraid to stand up for others or the causes that she believes in, never giving half a shit what someone else is going to think of her for it.
Just because she doesn't care what others think of her, however, doesn't mean that Katie runs around wild without morals. One of the things she prides herself on most is her strong code of integrity. She believes completely in playing a fair game, both on and off the pitch, and that something you had to cheat to achieve is simply not worth having. She treats strangers the way she wishes to be treated by them, and only treats someone she knows with disregard if they've already done something to lose her respect. The best way of finding out if someone is worth being nice to, Katie believe, is to not give them anything to talk badly about--if they find something to dislike and they find the need to be nasty about it, then that person is simply not worth her time. This keeps her from feeling bad about herself or guilty, and only continues to boost her self-confidence.
DEFINING CHARACTERISTICS • Katie is exciting, bold, and someone who is able to go out and make friends from all parts of the school rather than staying inside just her own comfort zone. Unlike most Gryffindors, she's not opposed to being seen associating with Slytherins on the basis that they are of that house--as long as they haven't done anything to personally offend her or someone she likes, Katie doesn't mind being friendly. She's involved in school, whether it be sports or clubs. She's "that person"--the one in school that's just about everywhere and always trying to make Hogwarts a more unified and pleasant place overall.
LIKES • Chelsea football club, the brilliance and bravery that is Veronica Guerin, being loud and proud, playing sports, comfortable clothes (with an emphasis on sweatpants and t-shirts), those unafraid to roll around in the dirt, coloring books, red and gold, kicking arse and taking names, Scottish Gaelic, photography whether it be snapping candids or serious shots, being informed, judicial procedure, meeting her match, the works of Orson Scott Card (specifically Ender's Game), Star Wars, science fiction as a genre in general, team solidarity, France, and showing off her pretty winner's medals.
DISLIKES • Unprovoked cruelty or meanness, soda, being told what to do, coconuts in any state, sitting still for any stint of time past forty-five seconds, ignorance and intolerance, primping and waiting for people that are primping, long dresses and makeup, maths, the color pink no matter what useless purpose someone thinks it's serving, humorless beings, being categorized or otherwise stereotyped, cold climates, long debates, gossip, time wasted, stubbornness in people other than herself, the way that German sounds, elitists, and writing, specifically long essays.
THE INSIDE SCOOP • [1.] The one thing that Katie matches to football in terms of her talent in the subject is baking. Cakes, pies, pastries, anything sweet and pretty--you ask, she can probably make it for you. As far as cooking goes, she's a bit lost to be honest, but this girl makes a mean pineapple upside-down cake.
[2.] When she was younger, Katie refused to give into her aunt Elspeth's insistence to enter her dance school, citing that she wasn't going to prance around in some tutu like some girly girl. It was only when she was older that she realized that maybe she would have liked to learn dance, and her mother even offered to enter her into lessons. Katie, however, was determined not to go back on her earlier beliefs and--on pain of death--told Liz that she was never allowed to speak a word of her change of heart to another living soul.
[3.] She has, and always will have, an enormous crush on Oliver Wood. Katie thought that it would go away upon his leaving school, but the truth is that once he joined Chelsea's football club--her football club--he became the absolute perfect man in her eyes. Well, apart from her boyfriend.
[4.] Speaking of Chelsea, she once got the bright idea to dye her hair bright blue in support of the team. When it ended up coming out horribly, she tried to play it off and make it something of a new fashion statement, but the truth is that she and everyone else knew that it was terrible.
[5.] Believe it or not, Katie's got an unnaturally pleasant voice on her. She might use it more if she thought that it was that wonderful a quality, but she never has recognized it for how good it really is and will probably be nothing more than a lifelong shower singer.

who are you calling at this hour?
F A M I L Y

FATHER; IAN BELL ..... 40 years old. Katie's father, Ian Callum Bell, is a Scottish man originating from Aberdeen. Her sports talent comes from him, although he gave up football following his university days in order to pursue a 'safer' career that would help to provide for his new family. It is because of this reason that he seems to live vicariously through Katie, while sitting tied to his rather unfulfilling but well-paying desk job at Bank of Scotland Corporate.
MOTHER; ELIZABETH BELL (neé FORTESCUE) ..... 39 years old. Katie's mother, Elizabeth Anne Fortescue, originates from London. She met her future husband, Ian, while they attended university together at the University of London. After having a child and finishing her degree (all at the same time, the talented woman), she decided to go into photography and is now working for both a local paper as well as independently, selling her work in galleries.
AUNT; ELSPETH GUDGEON (neé BELL) ..... 33 years old. Katie's Aunt Ellie, her father's little sister, has always lived nearby in Edinburgh and was one of the main reasons why Elizabeth got through school--lots and lots of free babysitting. Katie's always felt an extreme closeness to her aunt, although she's never been quite forgiven for not attending Elspeth's dance school when she was younger. Katie writes home to her aunt almost as often as she does to her parents.
UNCLE; DAVY GUDGEON ..... 33 years old. Katie's Uncle Davy is the only person in the family (although extended) that ever attended Hogwarts College apart from her. Afterwards, he went on to attend the Royal College of Art to study Communication Art and Design and now sells his works for profit, usually in tandem with his sister-in-law. Katie likes her uncle, but doesn't share with him the same closeness she shares with the rest of her family due to the fact that she did not grow up around him and only sees him sparsely while in attendance at Hogwarts.

sit down, come round
H I S T O R Y

BIRTH & EARLY YEARS ..... Ian and Elizabeth Bell could claim for ages that the morning of May 10, 1979 brought along the best possible blessing that they could have asked for, but it was no secret within the family (and to her later on) that the birth of Katie Coira Bell was anything but what had been a greatly anticipated date for her parents. She was "an accident" and she's not afraid to say it or tell anyone who asks. To put it quite honestly, her parents were drunk and stupid one muggy August night, forgot one too many contraceptive potions and... Well, there you had it. That's where she came in nine months later, born to a couple of idiots--but loving idiots, at that--barely kids themselves.
With her parents being only shakily established in the world as adults, life was a bit difficult throughout Katie's formative years and finances were always squeezed just a little too tight for comfort. And yet, Ian and Liz managed to put on a small, humble wedding ceremony when their daughter was a month old (she remembers being very distressed in later years that they couldn't have waited until she was old enough to be a flower girl), tying the knot after only about a year and a half of dating. They came under scrutiny by their families for the rushing of it all, but both felt that it was better for Katie to have parents that were married--and one was no less determined than the other to stay married, even if it was just to spite their critics and prove them wrong.
Growing up around such powerful presences and stubborn personalities is a main part of the reason for why Katie has developed many of the inner features that she holds today. She learned competitiveness and determination from all the bickering they did and from their constant contests to prove the other wrong--whether it was who was going to win the football match or which kind of cookies Grandmam was going to bring over at Christmas, Ian and Elizabeth were always trying to better the other. And yet, in their quiet moments (whatever few they had) it was obvious that none of the rest of that mattered and that were was a real love and chemistry between the two. From these times there was bred in Katie compassion, loyalty, understanding, and an appreciation for the kind of unconditional love that was shared within their family structure. These attributes that the Bells passed on to their daughter early on and throughout the rest of her life would and continue to be the grounding of her very being and what makes her think and act the way she does. For a couple of young kids that had no idea how to raise a child or what in the world they were supposed to do with their lives, they sure did a pretty damn good job on her as far as Katie's concerned.
CHILDHOOD ..... Despite her natural-born ability to make friends, it was difficult for Katie to get along with the other girls in her neighborhood growing up. It wasn't for lack of trying, but instead for the general simple-mindedness of children--none of them could quite understand what kind of girl didn't want to own a slew of dolls and dress-up clothes and run around in her mother's makeup and jewelery. When she would invite the neighborhood girls over to play, they were rather inclined to leave when they realized that she would much rather roll around in the dirt like boys. However, this wasn't to say that she got along with the boys any better. According to them, her status as a girl didn't allow her to come join in their park football matches. They cited her cootie infection, but Katie cited their fear that she was better than them. She cited it in quite an obnoxious amount, actually, from one of the benches flanking their makeshift field. What could she say? She had never been the kind of girl to just roll over at an injustice, and her determination eventually (surprisingly) paid off. After they realized that she wasn't about to just go away and leave them alone, a couple of the boys decided that they should let her in for a game, just to shut her up.
None of them had been expecting that her claims of greatness would actually hold any water. Katie made a quick name for herself in the neighborhood among boys and girls alike--depending upon the gender, this was either a good or a bad name--for being an ace footballer for her age. With her father as the manager of a local children's team, upon starting school she was given a spot and quickly learned a great love of proper matches and competition. Katie was a natural for the limelight, loved playing and scoring and being cheered on by "her fanclub", as she proudly christened any audience, and she was quite certain by ten years old that this was what she wanted to do with the rest of her life.
Unfortunately, however, as much as her parents wanted to support her in her dream, both agreed that there were more important things for her to focus on than just football. It was quite a stretch for their finances, but Ian and Liz believed that it was the best thing for their daughter to send her off to Hogwarts College to get a good and wholesome education. The only things that kept Katie from fussing too terribly were the fact that the school had a football team, and that she knew that her parents were really laying their money thin to give her the best possible chance at success. She left home and entered the college, reluctantly but graciously, and for the first time feeling the tiniest bit of fear and uncertainty in her heart.
SCHOOL YEARS ..... To be qutie honest, Katie's biggest problem about going away to Hogwarts didn't have to do with being away from her family or how much money it was costing her parents--it was most of all that she wasn't quite certain of the people she was going to meet there. Tales from her uncle told of a lot of stuck-up rich kids to deal with, always in contrast to the scholarship students and those middle class children like herself. She wasn't sure, starting out, if she was going to get along very well within the school, although Katie was determined to at least try her best.
As could be expected, she did indeed do fine upon her entrance into the school. Becoming a Gryffindor put her in a house with what Katie found to be a generally more accepting attitude, and for that she was eternally grateful. She became quick friends with her dormmates and much of the rest of her house, normally only finding opposition to her attitude and social standing when she walked into Slytherin territory. Still, things weren't quite complete until she made her mark and got accepted onto the house football team in her second year of school--after that, it was smooth sailing. Well, mostly.
Katie had always been quite an accident-prone girl, what with the rather physical sports she engaged herself in, and it seems like every other month ends up in a few days spent in the hospital for some kind of injury or another. Not only that, but she's had horrid luck in other matters as well--laying down homework and coming back to find it missing, accidentally knocking over stacks of papers, holes mysteriously appearing in her bookbag... All of these little accidents, physically damaging and not, finally seemed to culminate towards the end of her school days when she was poisoned on a trip in Dublin. It was a serious "accident" to be sure, but she's still as determined as ever that no one's out to get her, a notion that her family and friends jokingly insist.
After waking up and returning to Hogwarts after her stint in the hospital, Katie hopes to finish off her school career as strongly as possible and not let any more problems get in the way.
