Unexpected Visit
Jack was lazing away the morning at home, alone because Kal had a cousin in town she was shepherding around until he learned his way. The morning was a little lonely. He'd gotten used to having Kal around when they both were free. His design project was turned in and all he needed was his grade to know if he was wasting his time and should give law school a shot.

He didn't get any visitors, so the doorbell ringing was something of a shock. He closed the sketchpad, put his coffee cup on the kitchen counter and went to answer the door.

Matt had just flown in from San Francisco, and boy, was his poor aching head tired.

"Hey. Something came up, I had to be in town, and I wanted to talk. Can I come in?"

Jack immediately opened the door wide. "Of course, Dad. Why didn't you call? I would've met you at the airport. Is Mom okay?"

"Mom's fine. She and I were talking all the way to SFO, or I would have given you some better advanced warning." Matt made his way in. "But no harm on meeting me; New York hasn't re-arranged the furniture too much."

It might be a bit clear to Jack from long experience that Matt's gathering his thoughts.

"No, but it's sweeping the dirt under the carpet and there are some suspicious looking lumps underneath."

He reached for Dad's bag. "You want something to drink? I have coffee ready."

Matt chuckles just a little, then "That'd be great, thanks."

Jack put Dad's bag in the one bedroom, hoping that Dad would not have a lecture if he smelled Kal in there (change the sheets before bedtime, dummy), and got Dad a cup of coffee on his way back to the front room.

"You and Mom aren't separating or getting a divorce, are you?"

Matt's a bit too distracted to lecture right now, but -- and he looks up suddenly from his thoughts. "No, no, not at all. She wasn't happy about the sudden news I got, mind, but there's no problems of anywhere near that proportion."
Breath. "I'm sorry, Jack, this has got to be frustrating. I got ....quite a phone call. You're familiar with the concept of alternate realities?"

As long as his parents were okay, Jack could handle it. Hopefully.

He set the cup down in front of Matt and took a seat across from him. He'd never seen his father so. "I'm familiar with the idea. Anybody who's watched a movie knows about the concept."

Matt takes a sip. "Right. Well, in one of those, I have a daughter. And by some accident, she's now here in our New York. And her name is Elizaveta Romanova." There. That's said.

Jack's eyes widened. "There's a daughter. And her parents are you and Mrs. Stark? And Mom knows? Is that why Mom didn't come with you?"

Matt nods. "They are. And now she's stuck here, and we're the next best things to the real thing, so I'm going to meet her. Your mom's busy and having enough trouble dealing with the weirdness of the idea already."

Mom having trouble dealing with it wasn't good for anybody. She always got that look in her eyes when Natasha Romanov's name was mentioned, and it had been mentioned a lot in the newspapers since she married Tony Stark.

"Okay." Jack nodded and looked at his father. "When do we meet her?"

Matt knocked back a little more coffee and just tasted for a moment. "Today," he said with a bit of a sigh.

For a moment Jack had thought Dad was going to tell him to stay behind. They'd been a tight little family for twenty years. It wouldn't be that hard to make a little room for a lost sister, would it?

"Maybe I'm not getting something here. Mom's okay. The two of you aren't doing something stupid. What's happening isn't anybody's fault. What's worrying you so much about it?"

Matt manages a small smile. "Jack, it's been quite a night and morning. I'm not restricted to sensible worrying. For one thing off the bat, I can worry how much I'll disappoint a frightened girl by being her father and not being her father at the same time. She's used to a completely different set of life experiences." Well, not completely, but thinking on those lines was not going to help the situation. Especially not with Elektra's comfort zones.

Jack rolled his eyes. Now he knew where he was. "Dad, you're not going to disappoint anybody. You're a great dad. I'm living proof. Mom will come around. You're the one that tells me we can handle anything if we stick together. Well, we're sticking together."

"Good points," Matt conceded simply before downing some more of the coffee. "So. Lunch with your sister. And the rest of her family-in-exile. Best get changed for it."

"Your bag's in the bedroom. Take a shower and relax a little. You'll scare the poor kid if you don't." He grinned at his father. It didn't matter if Dad couldn't see it, the humor was in his voice.

Matt sniffed as good-naturedly as he could manage as he carefully stood up. "Thanks."

And getting-ready-time commenced.
