Chandler's night was not going the way he'd planned.

A few hours ago, he'd been having a great night. He had to work, but Ana was coming over later. She was spending the night, which he was very much looking forward to. They'd been making out for weeks. Things had been steadily progressing and they probably would have had sex by now, but it seemed like every time they got close, someone interrupted. It was hard enough to find some time alone together with both of them working on top of school and homework. Every time they managed it, every time he got his hand under her shirt or started to push at her jeans, there was something. A phone call, a knock on the door, one of them being called away. Suffice to say, Chandler was beyond ready.

He'd been half joking when he'd told Ana to bring condoms, but a part of him was really hoping that tonight would finally be the night. It put him in such a good mood that his co-workers were making comments. Maybe it was because he was whistling as he bussed tables, but he couldn't help himself. He was really looking forward to tonight.

Until he walked out of the restaurant and right smack into his oldest brother.

Fuck. Donovan. Fucking fuck.

Chandler had been avoiding his older brother. He'd been doing it successfully since the beginning of the school year. It was hard to avoid him when he was standing right there, though.

--

Some time later, Chandler found himself standing in an alley, the package Donovan had forced on him stuffed into his pocket as he looked around. Everything would have been fine if the customer he was meeting had been willing to pay for his merchandise and go. That wasn't what happened, though. Somehow, despite his careful glances around the alley, he found himself jumped from behind. He couldn't have told you if it was one guy or three, but it ended with him on the ground, barely conscious. He vaguely felt the pouch he carried being pulled from his pocket before he felt one more kick to his ribs.

Fuck. Ana was going to kill him for standing her up. Somehow, he found the strength to pull his phone from his front pocket and send a text. im sorry i love you. Chandler barely pressed send before he lost consciousness.

Somehow, Ana had managed to sweet talk her older brother into letting her leave work a little early. Her parents had asked her to stick around and help him close, but he'd taken pity on her and told her that she could head out when the bulk of their customers had left. In doing so, he'd earned himself a huge kiss on the cheek. It wasn't normal for her to get so excited, but he'd merely given her a strange look and shrugged it off.

As far as he knew, she was planning to spend the night with a friend from school. Regardless of what their parents had said, he hadn't wanted to keep her from the slumber party. After all, he understood the desire to act like a kid when you were a kid. Little did he know, though, the slumber party she'd mentioned several times through out the evening wasn't really a party at all. It was the alibi she'd given her family so that she could spend the entire night with her male best friend.

It had been a few weeks since they'd kissed for the first time, and things had definitely progressed since then. Unfortunately, the universe was against them, and they hadn't been able to do much more without being interrupted by a phone call or a knock at the door. She was hoping that tonight would be different.

Ana hummed to herself as she made her way to the house that Chandler shared with his father and brothers. She knew that it would be a little while before he could get off of work, but she told herself that she could hang out in his room until he got home. Once she got there, hanging out transformed into her laying in his bed as she read one of the books that had been stacked beside it.

Sometime later, her phone vibrated, and a slight smile moved over her features when she read the text she'd received. im sorry i love you. A quick glance at the time told her that he was running a little late, but she quickly texted back to ask why he was apologizing. When that text went unanswered, she sent another one... then another one... then several more. She was nearly in a panic when she heard a phone ring in another room. The conversation was muffled, of course, but the tone of the call caused her to worry even more.

She was stepping back into her jeans as she stumbled out into the hall. She didn't have far to go, though, because Kit was already coming her way. The expression on his face was enough.

"What happened?" she questioned automatically. "Where's Chand?"

--

Several hours later, she was sitting in a hospital room.

Chandler had been mugged. At least, that's what they were being told. No one knew the full story, though, because he'd been unconscious since they'd found him. Her fingers toyed nervously with the edge of the blanket that had been draped over him, and she was on the verge of tears.

They'd found him in an alley. He'd been laying in an alley... alone... hurt... and texting her to apologize for not making it home. It didn't make sense to her. He'd had no business going into some alley. They'd had plans. He was supposed to have been coming straight home to get in bed with her.

"So help me," she grumbled under her breath, "if Donovan had anything to do with this, I'll kill him."

It was three hours later when Chandler started to come to again, but for him it was as though almost no time had passed at all. One moment he was getting his ass kicked and the next...

He squinted against the glare of the light in his room. In all actuality, the light wasn't that bright. Chandler's head was killing him, though. Come to think of it, there didn't seem to be a part of his body that didn't hurt like hell.

He groaned softly as he took a mental inventory of all his various pains. His memory of what had happened was fairly vague as he came to, but it was clear that he'd gotten his ass thoroughly kicked. He didn't need to remember the details to know that.

As his eyes fluttered open, he caught sight of the gorgeous brunette seated next to his bed. He smiled weakly as his hand reached for hers.

"Hey, beautiful."

She was probably going to kick his ass for getting himself hurt like this, but he was really hoping she'd let him heal up first. He wasn't sure he could take another ass-kicking tonight.

With her full attention on the woven material of the blanket, Ana didn't notice when Chandler finally began to slip back into consciousness. Her head snapped up when he groaned, though, and a hopefully expression moved over her features.

"Chand?" she questioned softly.

The corners of her mouth lifted into a large, bright smile when he opened his eyes, and she breathed a sigh of relief. He was alright. The doctors had said that he would be alright, but she hadn't believed it until this moment.

She stood when he took her hand into his, and she very nearly threw herself into his arms. Luckily, she'd only made it halfway there when she realized that would probably hurt him.

"Il dio mio, Chandler," she breathed as she pulled back. "I'm so glad you're okay."

Her hand tightened around his, and she flashed him another smile. Right now, he was in no danger of getting his ass kicked, but that might not hold true when she heard the whole story.

He returned her smile, albeit a little weakly and thought, not for the first time, that Ana had the most beautiful smile he had ever seen. He'd always known Ana was beautiful, of course, but over the last few weeks he'd come to appreciate that more and more. Chandler had loved Ana his entire life, but ever since that night when she had kissed him, those feelings had begun to take on new meaning.

He felt horrible for worrying her. He know he must have, because if their positions were reversed, he would have been beside himself with worry.

He was sure she'd been about to hug him when she'd suddenly pulled back and he made a face. Chandler didn't care if it was going to hurt. He wanted to hold her.

"C'mere," he requested, tugging at her hand. One hug couldn't possibly hurt. Not any worse than he was already hurt, anyway. He wasn't strong enough to pull her down himself at the moment, so he hoped she would cooperate. He knew how worried she must be, but all he wanted to do was hold her for a moment. Surely, she would understand that.

Her eyes filled with tears when he gave her a weak smile. She knew that he was probably in a lot of pain, and she hated that she couldn't do anything to help. Once again, her thoughts turned to his older brother. If this was his fault... if Chandler was hurting because of him, she was going to... something. She didn't know what she was going to do, but she knew that he couldn't keep getting away with this.

"I'm here," she assured him when he began to tug at her hand.

Ana had loved Chandler her entire life, but her feelings for him had begun to change. They weren't just friends, anymore. They were something else... something more. She hadn't rushed to put a title on their relationship, but she knew that she meant it differently when she told him that she loved him.

"I'm not going anywhere, Chand," she continued. "I'm here."

Chandler tried to tug her closer, despite the pain in his... everything. He'd already wanted her closer, but seeing her tears about broke him. Even if he was the reason she was crying, he desperately wanted to hold her.

"I'm not going to break, baby," he assured her as he continued to tug at her. "C'mere.. closer.. lemme hold you.." He knew she was there. She always had been. That wasn't what he'd meant, though. He wanted her closer. He wanted to feel her.

When he finally had her close enough, he reached a hand up to her face and brushed his thumb over her cheek. "Shhh, baby, don't cry. It's okay. I'm okay," he assured her. He could count on one hand the number of times he'd seen Ana cry in their lifetime and he hated it. He hated seeing her upset. He would do anything to make it better.

At first, Ana resisted when Chandler tried to pull her closer. She knew that he had to be in a great deal of pain, after all, and she didn't want to make it worse. At the same time, though, she wanted to be close to him... she wanted to hold him just as much as he wanted to hold her.

His promise that he wouldn't break encouraged her to shift just a little closer. Her eyes closed when his hand pressed to her cheek, and in spite of his reassurances, a few tears dripped down onto her face. She'd been worried sick since she'd gotten his text message. It was a relief to see that he was going to be okay. The doctors had told her that he was going to be just fine, but she hadn't allowed herself to believe it until he'd said it himself.

"So glad you're okay," she breathed as she finally gave in and shifted close enough to rest her forehead lightly against his. "Love you so much."

"'m tough," Chandler mumbled another reassurance as he held her as close to him as he could. He was far from okay, technically, but he was awake and alive, at least. Some cracked ribs, a sprained wrist and a wide assortment of bruises were the worst of it. It hurt, but it was nothing he couldn't deal with.

"I love you, too," he returned with a smile as his hand brushed over her cheek. Chandler wasn't sure exactly when his feelings for his best friend had deepened. It was probably sometime between that first kiss and now. He did know that he was head over heels for the girl in his arms, though.

It was the last thing he should be doing in a hospital bed, but a moment late Chandler was brushing his lips over hers. It had been far too long since he had kissed her and now that he was awake, he definitely wanted to correct that.

He was far from okay, but he was awake and alive. Selfishly, that was all that mattered to her. Anything else... cracked ribs, sprained wrists, bruises, cuts... she wasn't worried about that. Those things would heal with time. There was no lasting damage. That was what mattered most.

"You're tough," she answered, her tone half teasing. "I get it, Chand. You don't have anything to prove."

Ana wasn't exactly sure when her feelings for her best friend had changed, but they most definitely had. He wasn't just her best friend anymore; he was ... her everything.

Her eyes closed when his lips brushed over hers, and she inhaled slowly through her nose as she returned the kiss. It was the last thing they should be doing, but she wasn't about to push him away. Besides, it was just a kiss.

Chandler was merely trying to reassure her. He hated seeing Ana upset. He hated seeing her cry. He hated being the cause, even if it wasn't exactly his fault.

"I love you," he murmured between kisses. Rather than deepen the embrace - he didn't really have the strength for that - he continued to brush loving, tender kisses over her lips. "Don't cry, baby. I promise I'm not going anywhere."

It was probably stupid to make such a promise, but he didn't care. He only cared whether she was comforted by his words.

"I love you, too," she answered automatically.

Like Chandler, Ana wasn't trying to deepen the embrace. She knew that he was too weak for that, after all, and she didn't want to make matters worse. She simply wanted to be close to him. There was something about being wrapped in his arms that comforted her more than anything he was saying.

"Good," she murmured. "I'd have to hurt you if you said anything else."

Rather than continuing to brush her lips over his, she rested their foreheads together. She would've been more than happy to spend the next several hours kissing him, but she knew that he needed to focus on getting well.

"You should rest," she urged him. "I'll be right here."
