ICKLE RHYSY
The first few days were rough, Theo would admit. He spent too much time convincing himself that Holly would return. She would realize the past was just that and give him at the very least a chance to explain himself. It became clear quite quickly that she was not returning. He could almost understand her leaving him, but to have Theodore ask him every day where she was, why mum wasn’t coming home, that he didn’t understand. That she continued to stay away from Theodore. It made his heart ache to hear the questions from the small boy. He deserved her, even if Theo did not.

As weeks past, he found himself in a routine much similar to the days after Cordelia, and before Holly. Except now such a life, he found it lacking some how. He couldn’t seem to remember how he use to occupy his time before she entered his life, though he was sure it didn’t include sitting on the floor playing with with dragons and trying to keep up with his sons rapid talking. He didn’t get it. Holly had been much better at these sorts of games than he could ever try to be. All he heard was his son telling tales that made no sense. That had no logic or reason. It was hard for him to sit on the floor and play this game of pretend he didn’t believe in, but it was the only thing that kept the boy happy and from asking questions Theo couldn’t answer.

He knew better than to get his hopes up at the sound of the front door opening (he had made that mistake few too many times). Or at the sound of footsteps down the hall. He knew he would just be disappointed when he looked over his shoulder to see who was casting the shadow in the room. And disappointed he was, even still. “Are you still here Rhys?” He asked dulling, surrendering the dragon he had to his son and pushing himself up off the floor. “I thought you had left.”

Rhys pulled back his mouth to withhold a pressed look. Yes, he was still here, and probably would continue to be here for significantly longer considering the state his brother continued to be in. His eyes dragged down to the floor after briefly flitting around the room, regarding in the scene before him with a general distaste.

Something needed to change. Rhys had never quite seen his brother like this, seemingly paralyzed against taking any form of action concerning a situation of his life. And concerning it was all over such a sensitive subject Rhys had begun to wonder...

He immediately shook off the thought. No, this was his brother's mess to deal with, he would intercede no more than he already had. Holly was a sensible witch, she would not burst a delicate bubble such as this one.

Bending down to take his son out of his arms and onto the ground (his separation from his sister had apparently made it impossible for him to walk anywhere at all Papa), Rhys stood back up straight quickly. "Go play with your cousin, Evan," he waved idly at the toys on the ground and his nephew as he spoke. Not needing much more of an order, Evan marched over to his cousin and promptly began making french dragon noises.

"No," Rhys finally responded to Theo, watching his son and godson for a moment before turning his full attention to his brother. "I'm still waiting for you to return to your senses or disprove my great lack of faith that you won't do anything stupid, so until that happens stay we shall."

His brows rose as he spoke, and Rhys crossed his arms over his chest.

Theo absently rubbed his thigh where the scar from the whole debacle was for a moment as he stood straight A ridiculous habit he wasn't even aware that he was forming, touching the various scars that were forming from the wounds Holly had healed. He walk to the door grateful for the relief from sitting on the floor.

"I am working. I am taking care of my son. I'm not quite sure what else you are looking for." That first week was rough, Theo would admit it freely. Then, Rhys had his reasons to be concerned. Now, well things were to as normal as they could be considering the circumstances. Eventually, the days would pass by easier.

It was never suppose to be like this. He had never intended of falling in love, it was a whim that Theo had asked Holly. He couldn't even remember why he had even bothered other than the fact that he was a bit bored. Perhaps a bit lonely. Somehow he had found himself enjoying this domestic life he had built for himself outside all the other things he had done. To the point that he had almost forgotten about that part of his life altogether.

And now that he knew what this kind of life could be like. How it felt, he was finding it difficult, suffocating even, trying to return to how he lived before.

Theo wasn't sure what his brother was expecting him to do. It wasn't like he was just going to totally give up and spiral out of control. He had suffered extreme physical pain at many various points of his life. He could manage this fine. "You shouldn't be surprised, its not like this is any different than how it was before I married-- before I got married." He sighed looking to his brother before stepping out of the room. "Go back to France, I don't need you here hovering over me."

Rhys stood with his arms crossed over his chest, gaze crawling along with Theo until his brother left the room completely. Oh, he thought he was fine, then? Annoyed, Rhys puffed out his cheeks and quickly collected his next thoughts. He would show Theo how this 'wasn't any different than before he got married' then, just so they were all clear and on the same step of the potion.

"Fine," Rhys called out casually, extending his hand out into the air. Extending his palm out, he glanced down at Theodore and Evan to make sure they were still alive and well. They had both begun to make dragon noises and swishing noises, which Rhys took as a sign that no one would be dying in this room tonight.

Retreating back to the foyer, Rhys grabbed his bag and quickly cut Theo off in the next room through a different doorway. He regarded his brother with the most disinterested gaze, paying more attention to rifling through his papers than anything else.

"Make it official, then," he stated, and finally located the stack of parchment he had created even before portkeying over here. He pulled the file out and flicked it open so Theo could read the first page. "Divorce her."

Surely, his brother didn't think he was stupid enough to believe that after less than a month he would be perfectly fine. Less than a month was nothing, practically three weeks wasn't even trial for separation. He and Juliet spent time apart much longer than that and they certainly weren't about to break apart. In the end, if Theo was actually telling the truth, then if nothing else he would be making this whole ordeal less of a hassle for Rhys. But, if he was not like Rhys suspected, then at least Theo would stop with this 'I'm not quite sure what else you are looking for' charade.

"I'm here now, I can put it through the right channels while I'm still in England. Might as well get it all done now with since you won't be needing me here anymore. I don't have time to be coming back and forth. You need to officially separate from her anyway," he shrugged his shoulder unconcerned. That part at least was true; in the end, Theo must know that.

Theo froze at his brother's words. Divorce her. Just like that, not even-- was that his solution? His eyes scanned the parchment before him wondering just when Rhys had the time to draw them up. Did he have the prepared since they had gotten married? Stored in some file just in case--- for when his marriage 'inevitably' failed. Had his brother have so little faith?

Feeling a simple no not sufficient enough, he pulled out his wand and swiftly lit the file on fire, hoping the flames singed his brothers fingers before he had the thought to drop them. "I don't need to do anything."

Glaring at the burning parchment for a moment, Theo finally turned his gaze to his brother. Of course his brother didn't understand. He never even understood him getting married in the first place, of course his solution would to be just end it all. After only three weeks? "Fuck you, Rhys." he bit out spitefully. "I don't need this from you. I don't need advice from--" His fist clenched as his jaw locked. This was not productive. Rhys was not helpful.

Turning on his heel, Theo walked into the lounge snatching the decantor off the table. What he needed was a drink. A drink to deal with his pestering little brother and his unhelpful advice. He was not divorcing his wife. He refused to end everything he had with the only woman he had ever loved with out so much as a fight.

He stared intently down at his drink ignoring the footsteps that followed him. He tried to focus on the glass, on his breathing. Anything but the sudden rush of all the things he could have said instead. All the acceptable excuses he could have made. He was a fool to speak when so delirious. Eventually, after a long moment of silence, Theo abandoned his glass on the table without a sip. "I'm not giving up on her. She just needs time, and until then, I will carry on. Simple as that."

He cursed as he dropped the lit stack of parchment to the ground. His brother's flare for dramatics never got old, did they? Feeling surly (he could have singed his hand), Rhys let the fire burn out on the floor instead of putting it out himself. He felt no such inclination to stop a scorch mark from being forever embedded into his brother's floor.

"Yes, you do," Rhys called back after his Theo's retreating form. Feeling quite like a shadow, Rhys let out an irate sigh and quickly followed him into the next room. Shaking his head, he took out his wand and cast a charm Snape had taught him in school that kept any ears overhearing a private conversation from doing so.

"You need to legally protect yourself. And since you refuse to do it through other means..." he trailed off, extending his palm out to help imply where the sentence had been doing. Will had told him about a slip up or two he had had with Anneliese, and Rhys was sure, absolutely, that he would react with the same resolution and swiftness if it came to Juliet, so why Theo was so adamant about letting Holly come around was not practical.

Holly was a smart witch, a smart halfblood witch that had no doubt experienced her own personal strife and difficulties in the war. What made Theo think that his direct involvement in all of that would make everything be alright?

"Carry on?" Rhys echoed. "Carry on with what? Do you think she is coming back?" He shook his head. "That one day you are just going to wake up and she'll be sitting at the kitchen table? It's over. There's no more time, you can't just sit here waiting for her fear to expire. What if she decides to turn you in? I can't help you then Theo, no one can, and what will you have to say for yourself? That you waited?"

Despite the Muffliato Charm, Rhys still spoke in a hushed, strict tone. Theo may be blinded by his lingering love for Holly, but Rhys was not. He knew the implications of what would happen to him if Theo was turned in as a Death Eater, and truly did not want that to happen to his brother or him.

"Through other means" Theo mocked bitterly. It wasn't the first time it was suggested, and he would be lying if he claimed the thought never crossed his mind. "Modify her memory? Why bother stopping at just that, I could just brew up a love potion, or cast an imperius curse? I sure I could remember how that one goes." He shook his head ignoring his brothers face as he talked so blandly about the subject. "What would the point be? What is the point of any of it when I'll wake up in the morning and know that the only reason she is here is because I force her to be? When I know, that she would choose to leave knowing my past."

Rhys didn't get it. He thought he was being stupid for not taking the 'easy' option. All that matter was that he didn't end up in Azkaban. Theo was trying to think of a way to fix his relationship and Rhys had already moved onto damage control.

"Do you think serving Holly divorce papers is going to stop her from turning me in?" Theo laughed picking up his drink again, this time taking a sip. "Yes Rhys, let's make that move. I would love to prove to her that I never cared about her at all. That this was all a ruse and now that she knows, fuck it all. Games over, I want to nothing to do with her. Fuck, Rhys, I thought you were suppose to be smart."

His quiet tone irked Theo, there was no one here to care. It was his house, and it was empty. What left was there to hide? He rubbed his face, fingers brushing the cut under his eye that was mostly healed. If Holly were going to turn him in, surely she would have done it by now. She wouldn't have--- would she have taken all the effort to heal him if she--- Theo downed his drink and dropped his glass on the table loudly. "It doesn't matter," he hissed looking to Rhys. "If she comes back, if she doesn't. It doesn't matter because there isn't anything I can do about it. It's not my decision to make. So yes, I will wait. And that is what I will have to say for myself because I'd rather stand by that than to force my wife to do something she doesn't wish to do."

He turned around and slumped down onto his couch. "Holly isn't going to turn me in. She would have done so already if she were."

"Don't be so ridiculous," Rhys snapped, his gaze hardening. "You know that's not what I am saying."

In a perfect world, yes. Holly would eventually come to her senses and in stride take on whatever codswallop Theo had fed her about his past being the past and it had all just been something he deeply regretted. Could he forgive her for trying to make amends through his future? Rhys had heard it a thousand times before. But, they weren't in that world any longer, the war had ended and he and his brother had wound up on the losing side.

Forces on the losing side didn't last long under the winner's regime.

Rhys clenched his jaw. His brother was so blinded he couldn't even face reality. Curling his hands into fists, in the next second he released them completely. Turning to inspect the container of alcohol Theo had left behind, he spoke lightly and airily.

"No, you're right," he conceded, much in a tone that he reserved for when dealing with a witness he had just trapped in his own words. "She won't turn you in, she'll decimate you. She's probably collecting all the necessary information and evidence to one day, while you're waiting for her to return alone, swoop in here with a legion of aurors and take you for everything you're worth. The estate, the family, your family, Theodore, your livelihood..." he trailed off, his hand rolling on his wrist as he spoke.

Turning sharply, he watched his brother out of the corner of his eye. "This isn't something you fuck around with Theo, it's your life we're talking about here, not the life you had with her. That's never going to happen again. It's just you now. It's never going to be like it was. You can't just---"

Rhys approached Theo now, reserving the pleading tone in his voice. How else could he make his brother understand that by doing nothing he was ruining himself?

"If you separate you're giving her the space she wants, the distance she needs. Then she won't feel inclined to attack you to feel safe, maybe she'll come around and you can start something again, but staying in this estranged state is not an option."

"No." Theo said simply. He refused to believe that Holly would--- she may never return, Theo would accept that but he refused to believe that she was out there collecting evidence to destroy his life. Out of everything, he knew that at the very least, what they had was real. He loved her and she, at least had, loved him. And that just didn't go away because you willed it to. He was not afraid that she would come after him so maliciously. Why bother to even heal him if that were the case?

Theodore, on the other hand, there was no question that she would burn down the world for that boy. If there were any reason for he to collect evidence and come after him, it would be for him.

"If Holly asks for a separation, fine. I'll give her one, but I won't be the one to initiate it. And I'm not going to change my mind on that." He looked up at his brother, keeping steady eye contact him for the first time in the entire conversation. The estate, the family, Rhys may have been painting it up like he was trying to save him, but he was just protecting his own ass as well.

"Write something up that gives her rights to see Theodore." He held up his hand to stop Rhys from interrupting. He saw her face when he said that if he left, that Theodore wasn't staying. That was the worst thing he had done. "I don't care what you think you may know, I know my wife. And if anything is going to make her feel inclined to attack, its going to be that I took her son away from her. We were suppose to do the paperwork ages ago. If you want to make yourself useful, fix that. And no hidden clauses, Rhys. She should have a right to him, no matter what happens."

Rhys rubbed the side of his face, the beginnings of a migraine starting to form. His brother wanted him to write up legal documentation so that his estranged wife could have rights to a child that wasn't even legally hers? So then, when she decided that Hamilton Nott was no longer a parent, a notorious follower of the Dark Lord, she could go ahead and---

"Holly doesn't have any rights to Theodore," Rhys snapped, honestly unable to entertain this ludicrous idea of his brother's any further. And even if it was possible, Rhys certainly was not going to have one hand in making it possible anyway. "She's not his mother. Cordelia is his mother, and will be forever be his other mother because she didn't relinquish any parental rights before her death."

Whether he meant to or not, when his hand fell from his temple, it heavily slammed onto the table before him.

"She had no legal claim to him! There are no rights to give her." Rhys glared harshly at his brother, suddenly very much feeling frustrated and exhausted. What time was it? He needed to separate himself from his brother soon or else he would hex him into next week.

Letting out a rough huff, Rhys took a few moments to breath deeply. Recollecting himself barely, he turned his thoughts to getting Evan to bed and recollecting his belongings.

"Even if there was something I could do," Rhys began, his cool tone returning. He did not look at Theo as he spoke, only looking up once he was ready to depart the room. "I wouldn't help you make a fucking dumb move like that anyway."
