ADIAN
Louis slipped quickly through the office doors, ducking his head low enough to keep himself hidden from any supervisors that might be lurking about. He was supposed to be heading toward the cafeteria for lunch, but how decent was lunch when you sat by yourself eating the goop that was served daily? He made his way through the maze of cubicles, hoping he didn't look too much like a hunchback as he passed the openings and small glass windows.

He had really been expecting more from this job, though he'd known his expectations were wild and probably ridiculous. After spending two years exploring the world, being contained to a few floors of the Ministry felt like prison, even if he was learning about the proper rules and regulations that came along with dealing with other countries. Louis had always been one to get off on his brains and charm, but here there was structure. It'd only been a week and he was already beginning to feel as if they'd locked shackles around his ankles.

Finally, he reached his destination and jumped into Adian Rosenberg's cubicle, "Lunch? Can you go to lunch now?"

Louis looked over the parchment sprawled across his friend's desk and muttered, "Yes, lunch should happen now."

Wasn't the word ‘catastrophes’ in Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes supposed to imply an exciting workplace? Catastrophes, like life or death weather situations, or dragons swooping down onto beaches-- stuff that had Ministry workers gossiping for weeks! But in fact, as Adian had sorely and unceremoniously come to find out, those events that made the offices zip back to life were not included in his set of responsibilities. No, of course not, give the young and fresh wizard challenging assignments? Preposterous!

Instead, he had the sole opportunity to call the file room his lair, and on more than one occasion seriously consider creating a fort form the amount of files and paperwork that made way to his "desk" throughout the days.

Yes, his job was abysmal, but it paid the rent and would open up some hiring within and/or promotion opportunities in the future, wouldn't it? He hoped so, he prayed so, or else... well, he didn't know. He just knew he couldn't live his entire, healthy wizarding life stuck behind a desk filing dead claims and events over and over again until his hands ceased to exist from all the papercuts.

"Huh?" Adian jolted up at the sudden familiar voice behind him. He may or may not have just been spending the last twenty minutes with his cheeks pressed firmly against a particularly dense file about the Knight Bus' mishaps for the past year. He blinked groggily, shaking his head fiercely until general recognition of the world around him came to.

"Yes!" he sputtered immediately, rounding to grab his things. "Anything to get me out of--" Adian interrupted himself, taking the moment to latch his hands onto Louis' shoulders. He shook his best friend slightly.

"Louis. My soul is dying today, it has already decided on a gravestone made of paperwork. We have to leave before it officially dies."

Louis sent his most disgustedly French smirk toward the pile of paperwork and waved it away as he backed out of Adian’s cubicle. “Pah, it is not worth another moment!”

He was careful to check over his shoulders to make sure that his voice wasn’t echoing over the eeriely quiet department, and when the coast seemed clear he jerked his thumb toward the exit to begin their escape. It was not as if they were not allowed a lunch, but it did seem like if any sort of amusement or fun was being had, the clocks seemed to move faster and before you knew it it was time to head back to your holding cell.

Your desk, rather.

It was like a breath of fresh air the moment they’d escaped Adian’s department into the corridor towards the lift. Louis had traversed what felt like the entire ministry this morning chasing down an Ethiopian diplomat who had found himself lost, but was really just keen on danishes and was stuck waiting on the ridiculously long line at the bakery down the block. The intern didn’t think going on a wild snidget chase for lost foreigners was going to help him learn how to create peace and harmony throughout the many countries of the world, but at least he knew now that pastries might hold the key.

Louis jammed his finger into the button of the lift, urging it to come faster and not be full of equally as miserable Ministry workers. He lolled his head with a miserable expression toward Adian.

“Cafeteria or do we risk the heat of the London streets?”

"Heat heat heat," Adian began to chant quietly, balling his fists together and shaking them up and down dramatically. At least the heat reminded them of the outside world, that it existed. As opposed to this underground--- facility that had fake windows with fake weather.

Plus, the food the Ministry sold was horrible, not to mention just about crazily overpriced when your budget was at the standard level of dirt poor. If he was going to make himself poorer, the least he could do was enjoy the food he very obviously could not afford.

The lift arrived and was thankfully, surprisingly, mildly empty save for a couple souls with seemingly the same idea as he and Louis. Jumping inside, Adian hit the button for the bottom floor and without a thought reached up to hold onto one of the handles of the lift.

"So," Adian started casually, speaking as if no one else was around. He looked up at the top of the lift for a moment, as if preparing his next few thoughts concerning a certain sensitive subject that had otherwise gone unattended up until now (he was). "This weekend," he continued, brows raising in a knowing manner. Whether Louis wanted to admit it or not, Adian knew he hadn't so easily forgotten that his ex-girlfriend, Louis' Hogwarts sweetheart, was engaged to be married by the end of the week.

"Thoughts?"

It took a moment for Louis to understand what Adian was alluding to. He stared in a confused manner at his friend for a few good seconds before their telepathically linked minds (so they liked to think) finally clicked and Louis scoffed loudly. The lift jerked to the left and Louis was almost sent flying into the other ministry workers abysmally standing beside him. Adian's question had almost knocked him off his feet, and he felt as if he was choking on his own air for a moment while he tried to regain his balance and composure.

"That is not this weekend," Louis croaked, standing up straight after the lift had stopped to let off a rider. His eyes rolled up to look at the roof of the lift, creating an imaginary calendar in his head. "That is next----what is today?"

The wedding was on the 14th. That was...this weekend. The realization that Dianna Dobbs' wedding was this weekend, and not the next, caused Louis' stomach to twist more than it had when he'd come down with a strange jungle virus in Cambodia last summer. The cushion of avoidance and support was abruptly pulled out from under him as he realized that Dianna was less than seven days from being Mrs. Felix Ackerly. It was an atrocious name, and his grip on the lift handle tightened even though they were nearing their stop.

He had managed to thoroughly ignore the invitation that had been stuck on their fridge for the past few weeks. He and Dianna had only ended things because of his trip and even though the letters had become less frequent and he himself may have dallied with the local women on a few occasions (it was only polite), Louis had always had in the back of his mind that when he came back to England for good that he could meet Dianna on her doorstep and ask her out for a cup of tea. Who knew where it would go, but to come home and find out that she was engaged (to a Hufflepuff!)...that had been a bitter welcome back.

"I think it is going to rain on Sunday," Louis bit out, now annoyed that Adian had burst his pointedly oblivious bubble to the whole situation. The lift doors opened and the brightness of the atrium felt nearly blinding. He gestured for Adian to lead the way to lunch, as he had effectively lost his appetite. "You pick where we go."

Adian's eyes went wide as his jaw unhinged to drop slightly at Louis' stumble. His friend had only shown unaffiliated disinterest concerning Dianna in the past recent weeks, so it was... well, Louis had practically flown into the poor bloke in front of him upon the mere mention of this weekend. That wasn't usual. Adian had let go of his handle to help Louis stand back up proper, but by the time he reached him, he had already returned to his usually balanced self.

What was with former Slytherins and their inherent ability for balance? At first Adian had just thought that his sister's husband's ability to practically glide smoothly was an Auror thing, but now he had begun to notice any and all Slytherins appeared to, in one way or another, carry themselves in ways that did not lead to tripping, falling, stumbling, or even remotely tipping in an ungraceful or unusual way. Weird.

Not needing to be indicated twice, Adian trotted out of the lift first to lead the way. "It might," he nodded along, truly thinking it capable. But most likely not, when it came to Dianna Dobbs. He thought, for a moment, as they walked, and waited until they were before a fireplace before speaking again. The delay was also due to him being unable to decide where to floo for lunch. Adian put his balled hand up to his head to rest against it as he thought.

"But I don't think Hufflepuffs get easily deterred by rain," he stated idly, watching Louis carefully out of the corner of his eye.
