Bad News Bearers
Tony, for once, was enjoying a quiet afternoon on the couch while Tasha took Eddie out to fill his head with all kinds of craziness under the guise of shopping. When they got back, Tony was gong have to spend time finding out what his wife was telling their son, and slowly explaining to him that Mommy liked to embellish certain things...unless they were compliments about Tony.

Those would be treated as gospel, Tony decided.

When the knock at the door came, Tony figured it was one of the kids coming to visit Tasha, though she usually kept them informed of her whereabouts.

Of course, the moment he opened the door, he really wished it /had/ been one of the kids.

"Eddie's out with his mother, Nick, so he's not going to learn the fine art of checking up on people or being a grumpy old man today." Tony says, stepping aside to let Nick enter.

"We're still working on the Maggie situation, if you're here for an update. Though, I gave that information to the person you've had hovering around us recently, so I thought you'd have it by now." Tony says.

"Sorry, Nick. My hearing is getting old in my advanced age. I thought I heard you say that Temujin, the man who has violated my daughter more than once, managed to escape the custody of the best-equipped organization on the planet.

Feel free to correct me and say that you meant that you're the reason Pittsburgh lost last night." Tony says, his expression hard.

	Nick sighed. He knew this wasn't going to be easy. He didn't blame Stark though. Nick would be the same if someone were after Sammy. "Mikel got out, too?" Tony asks. "Damn it. This is terrible.

Anya's not going to take this well. If I tell her, she's either going to want to find Temujin herself, or she's going to have issues. She just got back on the right track and I don't want that bastard taking it from her." Tony says, grimacing.

"Thank you for the heads up, Fury. I think I know what to do from here." he says.

	It didn't take Steve long to get over there. He was surprised by the seriousness of the call though. For a moment, he idly thought that the life or death involved was his because Mr. Stark had found out he'd proposed and was planning on using his orbital death-ray on him. "Thanks for coming, Steve. What I'm about to tell you /cannot/ be repeated to Anya. She can't know about this." Tony says.

He takes a deep breath.

"Temujin was broken out of SHIELD custody yesterday. Nick Fury just left after giving me the news. I don't want Anya to know because I don't want her living in fear or deciding she needs to find the bastard and bring him in for all the things he's made her do against her will. You and I both know either could happen.

So, I'm telling you because I know you'll do whatever has to be done to protect her both from the Mandarin and from herself.

And I mean /whatever/ you have to do, Steve. A situation like this, I can look the other way if something were to 'accidentally' happen to that son-of-a-bitch." Tony says, a note of ice in his voice that people rarely, if ever, hear.

The news took Steve completely by surprise. He'd figured after his counterpart had broken in and nearly killed the bastard (dammit, why couldn't he have finished the job?), that security on Temujin would have been practically impenetrable.

He didn't like the idea of lying to Anya, not at all. And a lie by omission was still a lie. But he also knew exactly what Anya would want to do. His thoughts matched Stark's completely. He didn't like it. Not at all. But in the past two years, he'd done plenty he hadn't liked, but which had been pragmatically necessary.

It only kept him up most nights, even with the therapy and pills.

The sound of metal scraping against metal altered him to the fact that he'd been clenching his fist, hard enough that even the pseudoflesh covering hadn't been enough to mask it.

"If he comes anywhere near her, Sir," he said, his own voice tinged with a coldness that would have probably scared the hell of out of Charlie, "he's not walking away."

	"Good man." Tony says, nodding at Steve. "SHIELD is working on tracking him down and they'll contact us if they need anything." Tony says, taking out a slip of paper. "This is Nick Fury's personal number. If something happens when you are near Anya and you can't get me or the Avengers, you call SHIELD. Hell, you call them even if you /do/ get me." Tony says. Steve slipped the piece of paper into his pocket. "Yes, Sir," he said. Personally, he didn't exactly have a lot of confidence in SHIELD and wasn't entirely sure he liked Fury's way of doing things.

Then again, in a situation like this, maybe there was no one better than a man willing to do the bad things. He was certainly prepared to do it himself.

"He won't hurt her again," he said. "I promise."
