about you. Name: JJ Did you have any holds? Yes, from faeriexlights. Way of Contact: faeriexlights on both AIM and GJ
about your character. Name: Julie-Marine Shah. Age: 23? Profession: Although her father is the owner of quite a successful English carnival (yes, a circus), Jasmine has eschewed the nomadic life of circus-folk in favour of a relatively normal career and home. She currently works as a secretary for the fashion-editor of French Vogue and, although she doesn't truly adore her job, seeing as it's comprised primarily of fetching coffee and fielding telephone calls, Julie-Marine does realise the value of having worked for a prestigious magazine on her resume. In truth, she wants to one day be a fashion designer, but hasn't had much luck getting her designs recognized as of yet. Location: Ru Bayard, Paris, France.
Fairy-Tale Character: Jasmine, from the Disney version of Aladdin! Ability: Julie-Marine has the ability to talk to animals - much like her Disney counterpart, who could hold conversations at length with her tiger and the monkey, Abu, she can converse with each and every animal on God's earth and, since she's quite the persuasive one, she can also get them to do her bidding nine times out of ten.
Personality: Vivacious, independent, feisty - these words all serve to encapsulate Julie-Marine's personality rather perfectly. She's a rather intelligent girl with a keenly sarcastic sense of humour; although her fairy-tale counterpart may indeed be a princess, Julie-Marine is hardly the type to let anyone force her into the role of a pushover. She's opinionated, and certainly won't hesitate to tell someone exactly where they can stick their own views if they don't coincide with her own. She does have quite the temper, and although it takes rather a lot to set her off, once she's angry, she'll stay angry for a good, long time unless the offender can do something truly extraordinary to appease her nerves (she's quite partial to magic carpet rides and being serenaded in the starlit sky, actually!).
Although she didn't have the strict booksmarts needed to excel in school, Julie-Marine does have a rather witty repartee, a fact that is highlighted in any conversation she has. She's an adept debater, and tends to use her sarcasm as a way to point out her opponent's (often numerous, in her opinion) flaws. While it is quite difficult to win an argument against her, if you do manage to best Julie-Marine, she's not really the type to be a sore loser - in fact, you'll probably earn her admiration and respect if you do have the smarts to outwit her.
In the same thread, Julie-Marine does have a rather fastidious personality, and can be exceedingly hard to please. She's extraordinarily picky when it comes to men, a fact that has caused her father endless consternation over the years, since he strongly suspects she'll never find a proper beau and settle down like a proper woman should. And indeed, Julie-Marine doesn't do well at all in relationships; she's naturally an untrusting soul, and it can takes a lot for her to believe a person has any merit as a friend, let alone as a boyfriend. Thus, it takes quite a bit of effort to win the title of 'true friend,' but once you do, it's nearly certain that you've made a friend for life. Julie-Marine is exceedingly loyal to the few that she does love and trust, and will do whatever it takes to make sure they come to no harm.
Although Julie-Marine's often ruthless remarks and detached personality may make her seem like much the anti-romantic, this is far from true. Julie-Marine does, in fact, have a truly romantic soul - she fervently believes in True Love, and although she has yet to find her own Mr Right, she's certain that he's out there somewhere. This is one of the reasons that she is so exclusive when it comes to choosing partners; since she believes that her soulmate should be able to understand her perfectly, Julie-Marine doesn't see the point in wasting time with all the men in the world that don't. Yes, they may be nice enough, handsome enough, and wealthy enough, but if that spark isn't there, she simply doesn't think she should waste her time.
Thus, Julie-Marine has grown to be a rather independent girl. She's determined to make a successful life for herself, so that she can have a fairy-tale ending when her Prince Charming comes along. Although not ambitious in the ruthless, I'll-walk-over-anyone-who-dares-get-in-my-way sense, Julie-Marine does have a passion for success, and strives to meet each and every one of her goals with all the enthusiasm and effort she has.
Sexuality: Heterosexual.
History: Julie-Marine was born to circus mogul Nikhil Shah and French trapeze artist, Melanie Simon, on October 17, 1984. Although the birth of his daughter was an event that should have made Nikhil the happiest man alive, the event was marred by a tragedy: his wife died due to complications only a few hours after Julie-Marine's birth. Although Nikhil was indeed devastated, he nevertheless believed that his daughter was a godsend, and spoiled her quite a bit throughout her childhood.
It was obvious from the very start that Julie-Marine's childhood was going to be far from normal - her father was the owner of a traveling English circus, and thus, Julie-Marine didn't have the grounded family life that many other children do. Instead of attending a normal school, she was tutored by the circus' resident Bearded Lady, an intelligent woman by the name of Suzanne. However, due to the obvious distractions prevalent in a circus setting, Julie-Marine didn't quite excel at her studies, usually shirking her education in favour of wandering around and talking to the circus folk.
However, as she grew older, Julie-Marine began to tire of the nomadic life she was used to - it was tiring, never making any friends outside of the circus, and quite possibly being doomed to carry on her father's business when she came of age. Thus, as is characteristic of teenagers, she rebelled, demanding that she be allowed to attend a proper university and have a normal life. When she turned seventeen, Julie-Marine embarked on what she believed to be a relatively normal life, full of long hours studying at uni and even longer hours spent partying at night. She realised her dream of wanting to be a fashion designer and, after she had acquired her university degree, Julie-Marine decided to move to France, where she believed that fulfilling her goal would be a great deal more likely. She soon acquired a job at French Vogue as a low-level secretary and, although it has only been a year, she's slowly starting to be acknowledged by her coworkers as someone with a great deal of promise.
She currently lives in a two bedroom-flat with Juliette Martin and, although it's far from the most luxurious location in France, Julie-Marine is quite comfortable. Despite her wearisome neighbors and seemingly-bipolar roommate, she's more than content with her current life. Now, if only her father would stop trying to set her up with each and every man he deems remotely worthy of his daughter.
Chosen Portrayed-By: Anne-Laure Balbir.
Appearance: Her fairy-tale counterpart was known for her exotic beauty and alluring looks, and it's fairly safe to say that Julie-Marine has acquired much the same sort of attractiveness. Coming from an Indian father and a French mother, Julie-Marine's skin is a light bronze, clearly indicating her mixed heritage. Her eyes, dark brown, wide, and always tinted with mischief, are one of her most prominent and alluring features, as is her long, nearly-black hair, which, when left unstyled, falls in soft waves down her back. Naturally thin, Julie-Marine doesn't quite have the curvaceous body that Jasmine was known for, but nevertheless, she's still physically fit. Standing at a petite 5'2'', Julie-Marine appears to be a rather demure, harmless sort of woman, an impression that is, of course, far from true.
In terms of clothing, Julie-Marine strives to dress in a casual but classy manner. Although not conservative, as such, her choice of clothing is also far from revealing; while Julie-Marine does have an affinity for skirts and dresses, she tends to wear ones that come down to the knee, with a blouse that decently covers her chest. Due to her slight figure and height, Julie-Marine often wears tall heels so that she can be on-level with her peers - she hates being talked down to (quite literally), and is thus more than willing to brave the pain that comes along with high heels.
Sample Journal Entry: A blind date? Now, honestly! Father promised me - right to my face, in fact! - that he wouldn't meddle in my romantic life, and now, what, he's sent along a 'fine young man who aspires to be the world's greatest human cannonball' to my front door, without any warning at all. Well, I apologise, Father, but I'm certainly not about to go off and have some sort of torrid love affair with some prat whose only goal in life is to perform the task that any ordinary iron ball, a bit of gunpowder, and a match could do quite sufficiently.
Good GOD. I have work to do! I'll bet you anything that this Cannonballer of the Stars (my father's words, not mine) isn't even terribly fit, and hell if I'm about to let an unattractive good-for-nothing interrupt my work-time. And now, honestly, if h - oh my god, I think that's him at the door. At the door! He knows where I live, and I swear, I'm going to kill my father as soon as I get rid of - yes, well, I think I'd better go.
