Comment on this entry with a character and three prompts - a noun, an adjective, and a verb - and I'll write a little drabble about it.

Spring always coaxes the flowers from the earth and madness from Hart Crane. Something about the change in weather or the pollen in the air puts him on the edge, brings him to rummage through the boxes in the attic for hours before he comes downstairs to Charles with something coiled around his hand, fisted there.

"Do you remember this?" he demands, holding out his hand, and Charles should know better than to say no. "This - this is the shirt you were wearing when we met."

He takes it outside and pins it to the wall of the garage, where he's made his office, just above the photograph he keeps of a bridge he won't speak the name of

Nesia

Nesia routinely has nightmares about weddings. While most girls lay down and dream of a handsome groom and sweet champagne and slicing into fluffy white cake, Nesia wakes up in a cold sweat if there is a single mention of tulle or engagement rings in her dreams. Tonight, it's Robin Sherwood, and it's the same thing as always. She is a bride, her heart is pounding. She twists and turns in the mirror, looking at her reflection. Because it's a dream, there are no freckles on her russet skin and her hair is smooth and twisted up and yet she only thinks of Robin Sherwood. She hears music and rushes to the aisle, but the other end of the church is empty. It's always empty, every time she has this dream. There is no man standing there. Not for her. He's forgotten her, she's already been conquered. Tears blurring her eyes, she runs through the church, tearing down drapes, screaming his name. Searching for him. But he won't be there. He's long gone, from the moment she opens her heart.

There's no use telling William that his father was a good man, but Jacob always does it anyway. Even now, looking at photos where their father is missing from almost all of them, Jacob insists he cared about them. William doesn't remember him and he doesn't believe it. He turns a page, another one of the entire family crowded together for the shot. Half of the boys are pulling faces, and one of the brothers is punching another in his broken arm. Frozen in time forever.

The album ends abruptly, one summer. Their mother stopped taking photographs of them. She's still a good mother, Jacob tries to say, but William leaves the room.

Michael is running after his brother, his long legs carrying him fast. Fast, faster. He trips over a toy on the floor, feeling the arm of the action figure break under his heel. He whines in pain and hops after John for a second, but he refuses to give in to the pain. He refuses to lose. John is so, so close to home base. Father is yelling for them to stop running in the house, Wendy is nearly getting trampled over and over because she keeps rushing forward to pull things out of their path so that neither of the boys step on them. Michael reaches for his brother, who is slamming a door, and with a crack that resounds through the whole house his fingers are closed into the wood.

Vinny: kisses, quick, giggling

Ramses: telephone, early, loving

Vinny is a secret agent. No, a spy. (Spies are a lot sexier than secret agents.) She's pulled her hair back in a bun, and is undercover as a librarian, stalking a dangerous Russian fugitive who plans to hijack a Japanese train and drive it into the embassy. It's very serious business. She peeks through the books, following him down the aisle, her smirk widening when he adjusts his tie and pulls a book off the shelf, a very Serious expression on his face. She giggles softly, and sees his eyes dart up. She drops quickly to her knees to avoid being seen through the books, then creeps towards the end of the aisle as he makes his way along the stacks. She crouches, ready to pounce, and as he turns to head down the aisle away from her she makes her move. She hops onto his back, standing on tip-toes, locking her arms around his shoulders and hanging on tight.

"Gotcha," she smiles against his ear, leaning in to press a lingering kiss to his skin.

Ramses wakes up to a tiny pressure, crawling over his legs. He smiles sleepily, opening his eyes in the early morning light to glimpse his neice climbing onto his bed before he closes them again and feigns sleep.

"Wammy," she sing-songs, poking his nose with her tiny finger. "Wammy, wake uu-up!" She turns to the red plastic telephone she clutches, pressing a button that makes it ring. "Tell-phone for Wammy."

"For me?" he says sleepily, opening his eyes and grinning at her. He reaches for the phone, pressing it to his ear. "Hm? Oh? Oh really? Yes sir. You can count on me." He sets the phone down on the plastic reciever, and then looks at the little girl very soberly. "That was the president, Nani. He said I have a mission. I need to flip the world's highest pancake. Will you help me?" The toddler nods seriously, and Ramses bundles his arms around her and kisses her cheek sweetly before he climbs out of bed, carrying her with him.

Hans is making a cake. That isn't to say that it looks like a cake, or even that it will taste like a cake. It comes out of the oven rather cake-like, though collapsed in the middle and too brown on the sides. Hans pouts at it, and wonders why it doesn't realize that its a cake for Gabe and really ought to be good for him.

"You aren't for me," he explains patiently to the cake, reasoning with it. "Perhaps you could just fill up around the middle some more?" But cakes don't often listen to reason, and Hans ends up filling the center with whipped cream and strawberries, then covering everything over with yellow icing.

The kitchen is a disaster of flour and, inexplicably, glitter, by the time Hans is done decorating the cake with blue icing hearts and stars. He surveys his work proudly, icing streaked on his cheek and making his hands sticky. He cleans quickly and runs into the bedroom to change into his best clothes, even putting on his shoes with golden buckles, before he waits impatiently, fidgeting on a kitchen chair until Gabe comes home.

Summer couldn't come soon enough for Augie. His mother calls it "senioritis". He calls it being in love. Really, in class, he thinks a lot more about Morgan's lips than about whatever it is the teacher is talking about. Sometimes, he becomes so distracted that the teacher will shout his name several times before some part of his brain associates with it, ripping him away from an image of Morgan molding to his body the night before.

He doesn't take notes, either, anymore. He doodles in the margins, drawing apples and little white kittens. He writes notes to Morgan, telling him that he misses him and asking him to come over, as if he wouldn't have anyway. He leaves these in Morgan's locker, or slips them into his pocket when he stops to kiss him in the hall.

Morgan smiles secret smiles for him in the hallways, his beautiful eyes dancing, that only help distract him for the rest of the day.

If Hans listens close enough, he can hear the ocean in Gabe's heart. He closes his eyes and presses his ear to Gabe's bare chest, savoring the way the heart inside beats. It stopped once, but that was a nightmare Hans only revisits in the very deepest dreams. His fingers stroke Gabe's ribs, his lips part as he listens.

There's ink on his fingertips, staining them dark blue, and he watches them as they touch Gabe's skin. As they make his heart race. He listens again to it, he lifts his mouth to Gabe's and tastes the heat of his breath. He savors his life, folds his arms under his body and curls up against him, cheek pillowed over Gabe's strumming heart

It's easier to hide sometimes. Sometimes he's angry enough to fight back, and he picks up the hammer from the back of the cabinet or grabs the piece of wood leaning up against the side of the trailer. Sometimes Cornelius hits his sister first, and that's when Tennessee grabs the weapons and swings away.

Sometimes he's just a child, though. Just a scared kid cowering in a closet, arms around his legs and mouth pressed to his knee. His breath quivers, hot tears roll down his cheeks. Cornelius calls his name. He has a broken whiskey bottle in his hand. Pussy, he calls him. Weak.

There is nothing more shameful on a man than fear.

Nicci has something bundled under his arms, hiding it from the world as he darts through the streets. It's secret, only for Charlie. He slips between an arguing couple, squirms through a cramped crowd of tourists. He finally finds their alley, finally finds their home. He drops to his knees in front of Charlie, panting and smiling.

"Baby," he whispers, cheeks pink from running, uncurling his arms and setting his gift in front of Charlie. It's his coat - the shabby gray one from the GoodWill - all fixed up with shiny new buttons, replaced where they were missing or falling off. "For you."

He wonders if Charlie knows that he's the only person in the world Nicci would give for.
